The Collect of the Day
Let us pray:
O God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus
Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal
covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do your will, and
work in us that which is well pleasing in your sight; through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Amen
A Reading from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to
the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone,
because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles.
All who believed were together and had all things in common; they
would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to
all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in
the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad

and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the
people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who
were being saved. Acts 2:42-47
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 23
Hymn: #519 “The Lord’s My Shepherd”
A Reading from the First letter of St. Peter
For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while
suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing
wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and
suffer for it, you have God's approval. For to this you have been
called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example,
so that you should follow in his steps. "He committed no sin, and no
deceit was found in his mouth." When he was abused, he did not
return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted
himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his
body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for
righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were
going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd
and guardian of your souls. 1 Peter 2:19-25
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.
Gradual Hymn: #712 “Alleluia” v. 1

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John
Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus said, "Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the
sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a
bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice.
He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has
brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow
him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but
Pag

they will run from him because they do not know the voice of
strangers." Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did
not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to
them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who
came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen
to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will
come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal
and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it
abundantly." John 10:1-10
The Gospel of Christ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
Gradual Hymn: #712 “Alleluia”
Sermon
The Nicene Creed
Let us confess our faith, as we say,
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
Pag
e 8
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers of the People
We pray to Jesus who is present with us to eternity.
Jesus, light of the world, bring the light and peace of your gospel to
the nations …
Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy, hear us.
Jesus, bread of life, give food to the hungry …
and nourish us all with your word.
Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy, hear us.
Jesus, our way, our truth, our life, be with us and all who follow you
in the way …
Deepen our appreciation of your truth and fill us with your life.
Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy, hear us.
Jesus, Good Shepherd who gave your life for the sheep, recover the
straggler, bind up the injured, strengthen the sick and lead the
healthy and strong to new pastures …
Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy, hear us.
Pag
e9
Jesus, the resurrection and the life, we give you thanks for all who
have lived and believed in you …
Raise us with them to eternal life.
Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy, hear us, accept our prayers, and be
with us always. Amen.
Draw your Church together, O Lord, into one great company of
disciples, together following our Lord Jesus Christ into every walk of
life, together serving him in his mission to the world, and together
witnessing to his love on every continent and island. We ask this in
his name and for his sake. Amen
Confession and Absolution
Christ died to sin once for all, and now he lives to God. Let us renew
our resolve to have done with all that is evil and confess our sins in
penitence and faith.
Silence is kept.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from
all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep
you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Peace
The two disciples told what had happened on the road to Emmaus,
and how Jesus had been made known to them in the breaking of the
bread. Alleluia.
The peace of the risen Christ be always with you
and also with you. Alleluia.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
The Preparation of the Gifts
Offertory Hymn: #230 “The Tomb is Empty! Come and See”
Prayer over the Gifts
God of loving care, you spread before us the table of life, and give us
the cup of salvation to drink. Keep us always in the fold of your Son
Jesus Christ, our Saviour and our shepherd.
Amen
The Great Thanksgiving
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give
you thanks and praise for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus
Christ our Lord; for he is the true paschal lamb who has taken away
the sin of the world. By his death he destroyed death, and by his
rising to life again he has won for us eternal life. Therefore, joining
our voices with the whole company of heaven, we sing our joyful
hymn of praise to proclaim the glory of your name.
Pag
e11
We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you
have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your
people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in
the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent
him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and
Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and
made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us
out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into
life.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he
freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had
given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,
“ Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood
of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me.”
Pag

Therefore, Father, according to his command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of
all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these
gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his
blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that
we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them
new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your
sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of
all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for
ever.
The Lord’s Prayer
Rejoicing in God’s new creation, let us pray with confidence as our
Saviour has taught us
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
Pag
e13
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Lord, we died with you on the cross.
Now we are raised to new life.
We were buried in your tomb.
Now we share in your resurrection.
Live in us, that we may live in you.
Agnus Dei
Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Communion Hymn: #57 “Thou, Who at Thy First Eucharist”
Choir Anthem: #209 “Walk Softly in Springtime”
Prayer after Communion
Let us pray
God of steadfast love, watch over the Church redeemed by the blood
of your Son. May we who share in these holy mysteries come safely
to your eternal kingdom, where there is one flock and one shepherd.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the risen Lord.
Amen
All your works praise you, O Lord.
And your faithful servants bless you.
Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with the body and
blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live
his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom
the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope
you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be
free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Behind the scenes—the Saturday prayer group
I was asked to write about the prayer group by Rev. Helen quite a
while ago. I have procrastinated because for me it is a very important
topic and hard to put into words, but we recently talked about prayer
at our last confirmation session, so it’s time I write about this. I have
had two watershed times in my prayer life. Although I have been
praying since I was a small child, my prayer life changed after I
became ill in 2000. Instead of wondering why I had become ill, it was
clear to me that God was trying to get my attention. With this illness,
I knew it was time for me to spend more time with Him in prayer.

As Christians, our relationship with God is shallow and superficial if
we don’t spend time with Him and prayer plays a major part of this.
Prayer with others is also important and I discovered I really needed
that support in order to continue to teach Sunday school. It is no
secret that Sunday school and church attendance has declined in
recent years and especially among young people. I tried to do a
survey and talked to families to find out what I could do better to
meet their needs. Unfortunately, I did not discover any things that
they objected to, or that I could change, but rather I found a sense of
overwhelming apathy toward Sunday school and church attendance.
I knew that only the Holy Spirit could change that attitude and the
weekly Saturday prayer group was born in 2007. We started by
praying for young people connected to our congregation by name
with older members of our congregation in their homes and long-
term care homes. A few years later I met a semiretired Lutheran
minister, Reverend John O’Connor, who was living in Pubnico at that
time. He has been volunteering in Guyana for many years and
connected us with two orphanages there. We began praying for
those children by name each Saturday, too. Of course, we do not
limit our prayers to children and young people only, but that is the
primary focus of our group as well as allowing older people to
participate in the mission of the church from their homes as many
cannot attend church easily.
I would like to thank everyone who has shared in this aspect of
prayer life on our tenth anniversary year. God has answered our
prayers in many ways and this is the first time I have been involved
in teaching confirmation, so the Holy Spirit is at work. We welcome
anyone who would like to join us, or pray on their own with the list if
that is better for them. I can supply a copy of the prayer list to
anyone who is interested. Julie Chandler
PRAYER GROUP: Julie is away for the next few weeks and the prayer
group will be praying on their own, in their own homes. If you
would like to pray along with us for all the children by name, please
