FROM THE DESK OF THE ADMINISTRATOR

Happy Easter! As the Scriptures say, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!” I hope all of you have a very happy day with family or friends and lots of chocolate! I need to give thanks to all who have made this Holy Week holier by their good works. Thanks to our liturgical min-

isters: our servers, choirs, cantors, readers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and especially our clergy team. Thanks too to the crews who decorated our churches. Thanks to all of you for your participation. It all makes a difference. May the risen Christ bless you! Truly, I love when our Churches are filled with peo-ple. Yes, our buildings are beautiful in and of themselves and even more so when decorated for the Easter sea-son. Yet, as the old church sign says: “What’s missing from ch- -ch? UR!” Get it? That’s YOU ARE! The building is only a building. It becomes a Church when we are gathered there in response to God’s call to return thanks to Him for all that He’s given us. Let’s fill our churches with the Church each Sunday and Holy Day! You know, sometimes at Easter, the Bunny brings jewelry; sometimes particular jewelry, like an engage-ment ring! If the Easter Bunny has done so for you or a family member, be reminded that there is a process for marriage preparation. I firmly believe we—clergy and parishioners—should be companioning couples on their journey in this new stage of life. If we don’t do it now, who is going to do it later? Give us a call to schedule your wedding and learn the process. Let’s begin the jour-ney together! Clergy and parishioners are looking for-ward to it. Our celebration of Easter reminds us of one of the spiritual works of mercy: praying for the living and the dead. One of the best ways to do so is through the sacri-fice of the Mass. It has often been tradition to have a Mass offered for deceased family members or friends. Mass can also be offered for the living – for birthdays, anniversaries, or special needs. I offer this comment in a self-serving way as there are declining numbers of Mass intentions in our parishes. So, consider having a Mass offered so that you too can pray for the living and the dead. To do so, you can contact the parish offices to schedule your request.

See you in Church! Fr. Jim Gretz

EASTER HOPE AND JOY We are a people who are changed by the dying and rising of our Lord Jesus Christ. This Paschal Mystery is reflected in the natural process of death to new life. We see this all around us and in our own lives. For example, we experience dy-ing and rising each year in the change of seasons. Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, and ascension are the ultimate event of dying and rising, of death to new life. Jesus shows us that new life can come from death, that we can find meaning in difficult times of pain and suffering. Jesus’ suffering, death, and new life has forever changed us and given us a different way of living. Death no longer has the last work. Easter is a time of joy and new life as we cele-brate the resurrection of Jesus and the gift of eternal life. This new life in Christ requires change in our lives and, while change is never easy, it opens the door to opportunity and growth. As we continue to undergo the changes of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative let us al-ways have Christ our hope before us. He is for us the model of the new life that change can bring. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

2019 PARISH SHARE

SNP Goal: $22,560; Received to Date: $9,000

LITTLE WHITE BOOKS FOR THE EASTER SEASON A limited supply of the “Little White Books for Easter” are available at the all entrances of HS and SN. Those who enjoyed the Blue Books for Advent as well as the Black Books for Lent are encouraged to consider this spiritual book for the Easter Season. A donation of $1.00 per book will help cover expenses. Also, we have the Easter 2019 edition of the “Five Minutes with the Word” booklets. These are free of charge and are in limited supply as well.

ANOTHER PARISH SHARE MOMENT The Parish Share Program provides necessary annual operating support for service agencies, pastoral minis-tries, and education programs throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The Parish Share Program supports the chari-table works of our Church, as well as our community outreach, and our communications to the media, the Catholic community, and to all of our neighbors. Please consider a pledge or gift today so that God’s mercy may be shared to others in the community through your generosity.

FUNERAL ETIQUETTE Three people are walking into a funeral home to pay their respects. The one man says, “I never know what to say to the family at funerals.” Another says, “Neither do I, I’m terrible at this.” The third chimes in and says “Just say, I’m sorry for your loss.” Then move on. So the man goes up to the family member and says: “I’m sorry for your loss. Move on!” Ouch! We want to say the right thing, but since we never know what to say at a funeral, many of us been known to end up saying something inappropriate, stupid or of-fensive. We have all been there, clergy included. Often our desire to help the bereaved can backfire on us when we try to make things better. If we don’t know what to say or how to help, isn’t it better not to say anything at all? Sometimes just holding their hand or a hug says so much. Sometimes after the funeral is when the bereaved will say that they are fine and they really aren’t. As the weeks and months go by, they may need that compan-ionship even though they may have initially refused it. Many people who are grieving report that after a death, friends and acquaintances seem to avoid them. The support and acknowledgment of friends and family play a very important role in easing the suffering of the bereaved. We need to acknowledge their loss and demonstrate our love and concern for them. We can’t fix it for them although we might like to do so. But we can comfort them by listening, expressing our love and concern, and walking by their side through a difficult time.
