GOSPEL MEDITATION "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" The words of Jesus' disciples in today's Gospel must sound fa-miliar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith.

Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behav-ior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many dis-ciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus' words in the Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reaction. When the disciples question Jesus' teaching, he con-firms its truth. "The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life." For some, Jesus' reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. "Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." For them, their doubt proves too much. Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts, as well. Peter answers. "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Notice this is not a confes-sion of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them. In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillu-sionment in our Christian faith. The same choice avail-able to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understand-ing? Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt?

Blue Mass

Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate the Blue Mass on Sunday, September 16, at 10:30 AM, at the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul on 122 Ash Street in Lewiston. The Mass annually recog-nizes the dedication and self-sacrifice of active and retired law-enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel. Blessings will be bestowed up-on all who contribute to the public health and safety of Maine, and prayers will be offered for those who have given their lives in the line of duty. Members of EMS, fire, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies are asked to wear their uniforms to the Mass. Both the Maine State Police and Public Safety Pipe and Drum Corps will perform before and after the Mass. People of all faiths are encouraged to attend this celebration. A reception will follow. To learn more about the Blue Mass, including its history in the diocese, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/BlueMass2018.

The Door—The Power of Presence

How do we conduct our-selves with our families?

Are we there with them or are we so caught up in our day to day lives that we completely miss the cues that our families give us?

Check out the video called “The Door—The power of Presence” by Paradisus Dei, Inc., on our website at www.holyspiritme.org .

This video askes the question in a powerful manner which brings home the message of God in our lives.

Holy Spirit Prayer Shawl Ministry

For the past 15 years, the Holy Spirit Prayer Shawl Ministry has made and provided pray-er shawls for the benefit of hundreds of those in need of our prayers and thoughts. We meet once per month to knit/crochet, and offer prayers over the shawls so as to pass along our personal petitions and intentions for the recipients. If you would like to be a part of this rewarding ministry, please join us for our first meeting of the season on Wednesday, September 19, at 11 AM in the downstairs parlor at St. Mary’s Church. FMI, of if you know of someone who would benefit from a shawl, please call Sue at 646-8217, or Verna at 646-4543.

The Faith Formation Team invites you… Our parish is blessed with an amazing group of volun-teers who are helping to

form the faith of our parish children. We need cate-chists (teachers) and assistants for several grades at both church sites, as well as people to serve as “faith techs” to provide extra assistance to children with disa-

bilities. The faith formation office invites you to think and pray about whether you might be called by the Ho-ly Spirit to assist in the faith formation of our children. Being a catechist, assistant, or faith tech is a wonderful opportunity to give back to our faith community, and to share the love of Jesus with the next generation of

Catholics. There are openings for people with all lev-

els of knowledge, abilities, and time. Some classes are held on Sunday mornings and others on Monday after-

noons. Materials and support are provided, as are

training and background checks. Classes begin on

September 23rd. To volunteer, or FMI, please contact Carolyn Houston at 985-6252, 646-5605, or at [email protected].

Faith Formation for the 2018-2019 Academic Year Registration for youth faith formation (religious educa-tion) for the 2018-2019 academic year for kindergarten through high school will begin on September 1st. Youth classes begin on September 23rd with Sunday morning sessions at both St. Martha & St. Mary for kindergarten through high school, and a Monday after-noon session at St. Mary’s for grades 1-6. Classes are provided for children of all abilities. Children with developmental, intellectual, sensory, physical, or be-havioral disabilities are welcome and encouraged to attend! Registration is required for all children, re-gardless of age, or whether they have participated in Faith Formation at Holy Spirit Parish previously.

First Communion and Confirmation preparation is a two-year process (typically in 1st & 2nd grade) in the Diocese of Portland. Families are encouraged to enroll their pre-school and kindergarten-aged children in the parish programs in order to develop familiarity with faith formation prior to the sacramental-preparation years. Faith Formation Family Handbooks (which contain an academic calendar, a description of pro-grams and policies, and other faith formation-related information) with registration forms will be available in the church offices, in the narthexes, and on our web-site at www.holyspiritme.org, beginning September 1st. FMI, contact Carolyn Houston at 646-5605, 985-6252, or [email protected].

From Pastor Philip Tracy and St. Thomas Catholic

School in Sanford…

St. Thomas Catholic School just celebrated its 45th year of serving the needs of families in southern York County who desire a quality Catholic education. We just graduated our first eighth-grade class and look forward to another year of growth. I am asking our neighboring parishes to help sustain our important mission. Over 25 fami-lies are in need of financial assistance for the coming year. Some of the families have multiple children, and the combined tuition strains the family budget. Sadly, a number of the families have a spouse who is gravely ill; the loss of work combined with medical costs are major factors. Others are making significant sacrifices and adjustments to their lifestyles to send their children to St. Thomas. Please consider making a gift to our scholarship program to ensure that a family who de-sires a Catholic education will receive it. The cost of a child’s tuition is $3,250 per year. You may sponsor a child, give a percentage of the tuition, make a monthly gift, or give a one-time donation. Your gift can be made out to “St. Thomas School” and sent to:

Fr. Philip Tracy, 66 North Avenue, Sanford, ME 04073.

On behalf of our families, thank you for your generosity!

BSA Troop for Girls

Calling all girls! Did you know that you can now earn merit badges by camping, sailing, kayaking, cooking, and more?

You can also earn the prestigious Eagle Scout Award which can help you impress the college of your choice and future employers. The Boy Scouts of America is now inviting girls, ages 11-17, to form their own troops within the BSA.

We are currently exploring the interest of girls in our parish community region about the possibility of start-ing a troop. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Cheryl Mahoney at: [email protected] or Elva Kindler at [email protected].

Cursillo

Cursillo is for Catholics who de-sire a closer walk with Christ with the help & fellowship of like-minded Christians. Please join us for our monthly gathering of encouragement for the journey:

Ultreya, St. Martha Church, 10 AM in the education wing on the second Saturday of the month (September through May). Next meetings: Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 17. Join us as we pray, read scripture, and share how Christ is working in our lives. All are welcome to join a weekly faith sharing group at St. Martha on Tuesdays at 4 PM. For more info:

Kat Boucher 207-216-7839 (leave a message) or [email protected] or www.mainecursillo.org

Thank you!
