Organizing Our Parish Life for the Future

Last week’s report focused on the vitality of our parish (the strength and effectiveness of parish ministries, organizations, and activities) and the stability of our par ish (our ability to financial support and administer the life and work of our parish). Together these two factors make up our parish viability.

Our recent Parish Assessment and Planning Process determined that our parish has a Parish Viability Rating of 8.5 on the following scale:

0 — 5 Indicates that the viability of a parish is of critical concern

5.1 — 7.4 Indicates that the viability of the parish is marginal

7.5 — 10.0 Indicates that the viability of a parish is good

10.1 — 12.0 Indicates that the viability of a parish is very good

12.1 & Above Indicates that the viability of a parish is excellent

Our Parish Recommendations

We have informed the Archbishop that our preferred parish models are:

If ONE Fulltime Priest is available: (1) Priest—Pastor

(2) Clustering (3) Twinning

If NO Fulltime Priest is available: (1) Twinning

(2) Parish Life Coordinator (3) Consolidation

Imagining & Determining Our Future as a Parish

Two important goals of this Archdiocesan wide parish planning process are —

• to inform Catholics in every parish that there are alternative ways of organizing the life and work of a parish and

• to engage them in the process of honestly and realistically determining the best ways

• to provide for the spiritual and pastoral needs of their parishioners and • to carry out the work of the Church in their community.

The two most immediate reasons for this assessment and planning are —

• to assist Archbishop Carlson with his responsibility for assigning priests to serve as Pastors and Associate Pastors in parishes, and

• to affirm the responsibility of parish leaders and parishioners to determine how best to organize the life and work of a parish.

Ways of Organizing Our Parish — Any Parish — For the Future

Our Parish Planning Team and General Assemblies considered the following organizational models and descriptions as we considered the options we wanted to present to the Archbishop.

PRIEST PASTOR (Viability Rating in the 7.5 — 10.0 Range) Currently we can afford a full time priest ($60,000—$65,000 salary/benefits).

Since we are becoming a non-traditional parish focused on human development and social outreach our parishioners are dependent on a priest for pastoral and administrative leadership. This is our preferred option

for a long-term Catholic presence in this part of North County.

TWINNING (Viability Rating in the 7.5 — 10.0 Range) One pastor for two or more parishes assuming they are financial stable;

have strong parish identities and well developed lay leadership; and share common organizational interests and structures.

PARISH LIFE COORDINATOR (Viability Rating in the 7.5 — 10.0 Range) A non-ordained pastoral leader appointed by the Archbishop responsible

for the administration and pastoral care of the parish assuming the financial resources and lay leadership to support the position

as well as the availability of a priest for sacramental ministry.

CLUSTERING (Viability Rating in the 0 — 7.4 Range) Two or more priests and/or Parish Life Coordinators caring for two or more

parishes assuming a limited number of parishioners who desire and are capable of sharing personnel, facilities, and financial resources

as well as working together collaboratively.

CONSOLIDATON (Viability Rating in the 0 — 7.4 Range) When a parish is challenged to maintain an adequate administrative, pastoral, and support staff it may choose a new model of organization, maintaining and

utilizing property and facilities for the mission and ministry of the Church assuming there are pastoral needs for retaining the property/facilities and there

are sufficient volunteers for ministries, organizations, and activities.

CLOSURE (Viability Rating in the 0 — 7.4 Range) Parish is unable to maintain an adequate administrative, pastoral, and support

staff and choose to close and merge with another parish. Property/facilities may be sold or retained for present/future pastoral use.

RESTLESS LEGS SYNDROME Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sleep disorder That causes tingling, pulling, or painful sensations In the legs at night. This is brought on by lying down in bed or sitting for prolonged periods. Often, sensations can be reduced or eliminated by stretching, walking, or exercising the affected muscles. The exact cause of RLS is unknown; however, stress, anemia, kidney problems, diabetes and ar-thritis are some contributing factors. RLS is treat-ed in different ways, depending on the intensity of the symptoms. Here are some tips to control the symptoms: • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. • Massage the calf and legs regularly. • Stretch your legs at the beginning and end of

each day. • Exercise. Some people with RLS find that

running in place for a short period of time al-leviates the symptoms.

• Maintain a regular sleep schedule since fa-

tigue may worsen symptoms. As always, if your symptoms are so sever that the above ideas don’t help, it is best for you to consult your doctor for alternative methods to control your symptoms. S. Rose, SSND. RN.
