Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?
My dear brothers and sisters, the word “Thank You” is very short but very important. The word “Thank You” does not only mean “appreciation” for something done or received but also means that some-thing done or donated is “received with love” by the recipient. “Thank You” is one of the first words we learn when we begin to speak. I still remember how I learned to say “Thank You” with my brothers and sisters at home. Our mother would give us some gifts when she came from the market. She would then see who did not thank her and she would ask one to return the gift until one said “Thank You”. When I started kindergarten our teacher would test our abilities by asking us questions like what do you say to your mother and your fa-ther when you receive sweets from them? And together as a class, we would reply saying; we say “Thank You” and our teacher would approve the answer and congratulate us. So, at this young age we were taught the value of gratitude. As we grew older we understood more what it meant to be grateful through a wide range of African proverbs, idioms, and sayings. One of the sayings I still remember in my native language was entasi-ima ehabwa limoi which means someone ungrateful is always given once. I believe each one of us has gone through the same experience and that is why wherever you go, you will hear this beautiful word “Thank You” or muchas gracias in Spanish and dziekuje bardzo in Polish, which is not only a word of appreciation but also a quality of being human. We all admire people who are apprecia-tive, and we can connect with them easily. There are also other forms of showing gratitude such as sending a “Thank You” card to someone or using a gesture like slightly bowing the head before a person with folded hands (in some cultures). Jesus in this weekend’s Gospel is dealing with this group of ungrateful people. They were cleansed but ended up celebrating and never remembered to go back and give God thanks. They are the antithesis of Naaman in the first reading from the second Book of Kings who, after realizing that he had been cured of his leprosy returned to Elisha to give God thanks. We might have found ourselves in the same situation at some point in our lives when we asked God to help us in certain situations but after receiving what we desired we never remembered to say “Thank You Lord” but instead ended up celebrating our success instead. May God forgive us for those times we never recognized His graciousness and thanked Him. In the Lord, Fr. Gosbert Rwezahura.
From The Dining Room Table of Deacon Mel
Being thankful is becoming more and more foreign to us as a society and culture. Of course there are people who still say “thank you” to show their appreciation, but over the years I found that expressions of thankfulness have been steadily declining. That is something that we all should be concerned about. When we lose our sense of appreciation and gratitude we lose more than just an op-portunity to act politely. We lose one of the fundamental characteristics that are at the heart of any spirituality that claims to be Christian. When you think of it there isn’t anything that we have, including our own lives, that hasn’t come to us from God. Nothing is of our own making. Everything is Grace. We can never re-pay God for all the gifts we have received from him, but what we can give him is our thanks. Even our ability to give thanks is a gift from God. So let us all reflect upon God’s goodness and all he has given us and all that he has done for us, and give him thanks.

Miracles of Faith
Besides being cured, what do Nathan (first reading) and the leper who thanked Jesus (Gospel) have in common? Both of them began to believe. Nathan proclaims Israel's God to be the only God. The only leper who returned to thank Jesus was "glorifying God in a loud voice" (Luke 17:15). It makes me wonder, what miracles do we see that help us grow in faith? For an answer, we can look at a second thing they had in com-mon: they both asked for help. Sometimes we get caught up in self-sufficiency mode, thinking we have to handle all our prob-lems by ourselves. We may miss out on ways to solve those problems by not asking for help. If you think asking for help is a sign of weakness, you may be missing a chance for God to act through one of your friends and give you support. And, of course, you can ask God for help in prayer. We may have friends who help us in times of need or inspire us with their faith, but we have to decide to make a leap of faith ourselves. The third thing that Nathan and the leper did in com-mon was express their faith. You can spend your whole life thinking that you are a Christian, but if you never express that faith, it will be just a theory. St. Paul in the second reading, for example, was suffering in prison, but he didn't mind because his suffering demonstrated the importance of Jesus' message to him. So he wrote from prison in the hope that other Christians would be encouraged in their faith. Perhaps you know of some-one who inspired you with their faithfulness and dedication. Having a friend who helps us grow in faith can be a very nice miracle indeed. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
