THE TRIUMPH OF THE HOLY CROSS This Friday, September 14th, the Church cele-brates a very ancient Feast - the Triumph of the Cross, our Parish Feast. The Feast marks the discovery of the Cross of Jesus in Jerusalem by St. Helen in the year 326. Upon finding the Cross, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was dedicated. This large church is built around the Hill of Calvary - where Jesus died - and the Empty Tomb - where His Body rested for three days before the Resurrection. But the Feast marks the "Triumph" of the Cross - our deep and primary Christian belief that Jesus has conquered sin and death by His Death on the Cross. Our churches always include a central Crucifix near the Altar - to draw the attention of all believers to the Salvation and Redemption purchased for us by the Lamb of God Who died to save us all. All religions use symbols to express the beliefs in that religion. Christianity has many symbols - just walk into any church and in every corner there are different signs and indications about Christian faith. But surely the Cross has become the central

symbol of our faith. It is a sign of how God takes what is evil and deadly and turns it into something good and life-giving. The Cross speaks of how Jesus has changed the sin of the world and the reign of Satan into God's forgiveness and the kingdom of light. Jesus said that every disciple of His had to "take up his cross every day and follow Me." We have

come to understand that the cross is ours. It is true that Jesus died once for all to save us. But, in the mystery of His Spirit, the Cross enters each of our lives through the rejections and sufferings that we undergo. And, like Jesus, we cannot run away from it, or become bitter at it, or reject it. We unite our sufferings to the Cross of Jesus so that He may redeem

them and use them for the salvation of the world. Isn't that what participation in the Mass is all about? - Entering into the mystery of the Death and Resurrection of Christ! We exalt, lift up, Christ's Cross as the sign of salva-tion. "The Son of Man must be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life. When I am lifted up, I will draw all to Myself" (John 3.15;12.32)
