The following letter is from Susan Presley, the Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, and is communicating for the Mendota Area Ministerial Association (MAMA). It is pertaining to the bell ringing for the Salvation Army at local businesses.

Dear Friends in Ministry:

As you know, MAMA is in charge of the Salvation Army bell ringing each year, which raises thousands of dollars, and nearly all of it stays in our community.

Normally, the five organizations that ring the bell for two weekends are MAMA (Shell), Rotary (Beck's Lakeside), Lions (Cindy's) and Kiwanis (Sullivan's) and

This year, things are different.

The local Kiwanis club has dissolved

Both the Lions and Rotary have opted not to put their members at health risk by having them ring bells, and both clubs are donating the average of what they raised in the last two years.

The police offered to take over the Kiwanis' two weekends at Sullivan's, rather than doing one weekend later in

I said all that to say this—I'm open to suggestions. Here's a few thoughts, but would welcome other ideas, as well.

• We could leave it as it is, with bells only being rung at Sullivan's and Shell, since traffic will likely be very slow at Cindy's, at least.

• Each of the larger churches could take Shell, Cindy's and Beck's

I've made a sign-up sheet online for Shell, https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080e4cadac2fa31-salvation2 So far a total of zero people have signed up, and it's been in our church newsletter.

I'd be glad to hear thoughts from anyone. I think this is an important thing in the community, but it's a tricky year, to say the least.

In that discourse, Saint Paul writes that the greatest of the three theological virtues is love, the only one that remains when we attain to our heavenly home—God willing. I’ll talk more about love next week.

We begin Advent as a season of expectation—and of hope. The first Advent was a time of hope for Mary and Joseph as they awaited the coming Messiah; our annual Advent, in preparation for that second coming of when we know not, is a time of hope for us. In a sense, when we go into Advent, we are celebrating the first coming of Christ while we hope in that second coming. As the Church begins a new year, it calls our focus to the end of time.

Dr. Brant Pitre points out that Saint Augustine said, “The first coming of Christ the Lord was in obscurity; the second will be in the sight of the whole world. When he came in obscurity no one recognized him but his own servants; when he comes openly he will be known by both good people and bad. When he came in obscurity, it was to be judged; when he comes openly, it will be to judge.” When Jesus comes the second time—to judge—we will not wonder if it is him. We will know. His first coming was in obscurity and his second coming will be known to the whole world.

Additionally, Dr. Pitre continues from paragraph 524 of the Catechism (CCC): When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this an-cient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming.

The depth and beauty and mystery of the Church can be simply stunning, in my eyes. The way our God has so perfectly woven the intricacies of nature and the created universe, and then revealing them to us as we were fit to understand, finally revealing everything in full in Christ our Lord.

As we enter into the first week of Advent, let us pon-der the hope we hold for salvation—ours, and that of the whole world.

for that real Second Advent. You see, the first Advent actually

took place as Joseph and Mary made their way to Bethle-hem to be counted in the census.

Mary certainly knew that she was to bear the Son of

God, because that is precisely what the Archangel Gabriel told her at the Annunciation, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, - and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Lk 1:31-33 emphasis added).

they knew. Mary heard it from the archangel,

like the pondering question that has become a popular song, they knew…

Just as sacramental confession allows us to refresh and begin anew, so in a similar way this season of Advent each year gives us a chance to sharpen the focus on our Christian faith. After all, this is the beginning of a new year in the Church’s liturgical calendar, so what better way to kick off the new year than by having an honest review and assessment of where we are now in our journey of faith.

Each week of Advent we have a particular theme to help us sharpen that focus too. For example, this first week of Advent has as its focal point the theological virtue of Hope.

by looking at the meaning of the

word “liturgy.” Today, I would like to begin looking at what it means to worship, and why our worship is important.

Consider your typical experience of the Mass. Many will state their own observation that the Mass is not something particularly inspiring, and some even make the claim that the Mass is b-o-r-i-n-g. That is only because they have been poorly catechized, especially as regards an understanding of what truly transpires in the sacred liturgy.

This idea of active participation was a sea change for most Catholics in the wake of the Second Vatican Coun-cil. Remember, it was after this Council that the Mass was able to be celebrated in the vernacular—that is, the language of the people. For centuries every Catholic’s experience of the Mass was something less than “active.” With the language of the liturgy being almost totally in Latin, it was commonplace for practicing Catholics to make use of their rosary beads during the Mass by praying the rosary while the priest, and to some extent, the altar servers celebrated the Mass in Latin.

Worship is thus always a rendering of due homage to God by intelligent beings. There can be no worship without intelligence, without the quality of mind or of consciousness.

As we dig into what our worship of God truly is, we will come to a much richer and deeper understanding of our part in its celebration.

Watch THE STORY OF THE NATIVITY: THE TRUTH OF CHRISTMAS

.

Listen PREPARE THE WAY OF THE KING BY DR. SCOTT HAHN Your Advent journey will take on new meaning with Dr. Scott Hahn’s illuminating presentation on the greatest gift ever given to mankind—Jesus Christ.

Learn ADVENT This Advent prepare your heart through this exploration of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Virgin Birth, and the events surrounding the arrival of Jesus Christ.

In What Way is God the Truth? † In what way is God the truth? God is Truth itself and as such he can neither deceive nor be deceived. He is “light, and in him there is no darkness” (1 John 1:5). The eternal Son of God, the incarnation of wisdom, was sent into the world “to bear witness to the Truth” (John 18:37). Further reading CCC ¶ [214-217, 231]

† In what way does God reveal that he is love? God revealed himself to Israel as the One who has a stronger love than that of parents for their children or of husbands and wives for their spouses. God in himself “is love” (1 John 4:8, 16), who gives himself completely and gratuitously, who “so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16-17). By sending his Son and the Holy Spirit, God reveals that he himself is an eternal exchange of love.

From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents,

Thank you to all of our staff and students who

packed up at a moment’s notice to move home for re-

mote learning. Thank you, parents and caretakers, for

helping us out with the learning process. Also, thank

you to those students who passed on their school

Chromebook so a Kindergartener could use it. We sure

appreciate your family’s kindness to help our little

ones. The Chromebooks I ordered this summer are

still not here. Please keep in contact with your child-

(ren)’s teachers with your questions.

Please read the details below, regarding the Friday pick-up time and details for this week for PreK to Grade 8.

We continue to pray for all of those affected by

coronavirus. Our prayers go out to all of the positive

patients, those being quarantined, those waiting for

results, for the people caring for them and for the

health care workers. May those who have died from

the virus, rest in peace. May God bless you and keep

you.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Despite our many

challenges, we all have people and things for which we

are grateful. Keep the prayers of gratefulness flowing.

Just an update: My hip replacement got postponed

last week and is rescheduled for this Friday, November

20. God willing. I will be out of the office for a few

weeks. The pro tempore administrator is Mrs. Motter.

Mrs. Doyle and Fr. Pilon will be helping Mrs. Motter.

Mrs. Kobilsek

Box Tops for Education has a New System Our school will continue to collect Box Tops for Education this year. You will now download the Box Tops for Education app to your mobile phone and then scan your receipt. When you scan and choose Holy Cross School, you are helping our school to earn cash. If you have any paper box tops, please send them in to the school.

Box Tops (continued)

A good rule to have is to check the boxes and bags before they go into the trash. With the new system, the box top icon is not a coupon but an image to remind you to scan your receipt. If you see a Box Top icon, scan your receipt and choose Holy Cross School, Mendota.

Remote Learning vs. Absence Beginning Immediately

As with anything new, we have learning to do. We have refined our expectations for what it means to be a remote learner and what it means to be absent. Students still need to attend appointments, etc. You can contact your child’s teacher because we still need to take attendance each day.

Here is an explanation. We hope it clarifies this for you. You or your child can email their teacher if you have any questions.

If you or your child is sick and the work can not be completed, please contact the teachers. We are dealing with many different circumstances. Also, if the teachers are sick or unable to teach, they will let your child know through google classroom or their school email.

Collect Your Empty Cartridges One of our fundraisers is to collect your empty ink cartridges.

Scrip The Scrip order form is in the File Library in OptionC. The businesses listed are only a few of the choices. If there is something you would like that is not listed, please write it on the order form and write the amount that you want.

You can always direct your questions to Lorraine Walter in the business office at 538-6151.

This is an easy fundraiser for the school and it helps reduce your tuition for next year, as well.

Coming Up: December 18 - End of Quarter #2

WHY ARE WE HERE? WHAT’S LIFE ALL ABOUT?

Sometimes we get so caught up in the depth of our faith that we forget what it was like to first wrestle with the big questions – Who am I? What am I searching for? What’s our shared story? Who is Jesus? Why do we need a Church? Is there a God? We all need to get back to the basics to make sure the foundation is strong.

Beginning on Wednesday, December 2nd, Fr. Pilon will lead a parish-wide study that will run for seven weeks and will start at 6:30 p.m. The plan is to be open to 90 minute sessions, but in reality will more likely only run about 60 minutes. We will be ordering a number of study guides to enhance the experience. If you are interested in joining in this beautiful and enlightening study and would like a study guide, please call the parish office.

We are excited to introduce The Search, a new seven part Augustine Institute Original Series with the goal of lighting that first fire in those who don’t yet know the faith or reigniting the fire in those who need a primer on the foundational questions.

Due to Covid-19 we will be using Zoom (the same numbers used for the Mass) to host the study sessions. For those who are unable to use Zoom, you may call in on the number we use for our community rosary—425.436.6314. The access number is 604509.

Dear Pastors,

In the Diocese of Peoria, we have a lot to be thankful for. In fact, the word Eucharist, the central reality of our

faith, literally means “thanksgiving.” As a bishop, I am particularly grateful every time I ordain a man to the

priesthood and send him out to minister to the people of this great diocese. I am also grateful to those young

men who have said “yes” to discerning a call to the priesthood, and who have entered our seminary program.

This Thanksgiving weekend, please give thanks for these men and show your support by giving generously to

the St. Therese Seminarian Fund.

The fund pays for tuition, room and board for theologians—those seminarians who have already graduated

college (either a university or college seminary). It also covers the salaries, office costs and marketing expenses

that keep our seminarian program afloat.

On this Sunday after Thanksgiving, I invite you to give thanks for those who are giving their lives to the

Church. There will be a second collection at each Mass that weekend. Please make checks payable to the

Catholic Diocese of Peoria Office of Priestly Vocations.

Thank you for your generosity, and please know of my prayers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C.
