This is a season of joyful expecta tion and thoughtful preparation. Christmas is a time of giving as we celebrate the greatest gift the world has ever received, the baby Jesus, God’s one and only Son. At this time of year, I encourage all to give generously to assist those who are in need. May the true spirit of the season and Christmas touch each of you and your families. Here at Holy Cross, students and staff will be entering into the spirit of this season together through our Advent campaign, our participation in the Memorial, and our daily interactions in and around the school building. Congratulations to all of our fall sports teams for representing Holy Cross on the court, the field and the trails. Although we suffered some disappointing losses, each athlete and coach put forward their best efforts and represented the Crusader spirit well – we will cherish the many individual and team highlights throughout the fall season. We are proud of all of your accomplishments. As we near Christmas, so many arts and technology initiatives are underway, it’s aweinspiring. I note in particular the wonderful per formance of Pippin and the corresponding art display “On The Right Track”. We look forward to Coffee House and to the Holy Cross bands getting us into the Christmas spirit during our lunch hours and at the Katharine Splinter Memorial Concert. The communications technology crew is again behind the scenes at many of our events, preparing for our upcoming anniversary, giving www.hctoday.ca a wonderful new look, and partnering with local cable station, Cogeco. We certainly live in increasingly cramped quarters as our specialized programs grow and our need for storage increases. We strive to be good neighbours and stewards of not only our be longings but of our relationships with one another. This was very evident as Holy Cross once again hosted a systemlevel profes sional development day, one centering on our Catholic faith, while in the midst of Pippin. Thanks very much to all who opened their doors, shared their space, and made this work. on Thursday, December 9th. On Saturday, December 4th, Anne Heemskerk from the Archdiocesan Youth Office is organizing an Advent Retreat for all high school youth at St. Paul the Apostle Church. The day runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. See Mr. For-ster for details or to sign up. And, our Life Teen Nights continue on Sunday nights at St. Paul the Apostle Church. Congratulations to members of C.I.C.S. who were part of this year’s Toronto Street Retreat from November 16 – 17th. The students did a Street Walk with Patrick Sullivan of Sanctuary Ministries,

made lunches and took them out to the homeless on the streets as part of Street Patrol, and volunteered at St. Felix Centre and the Good Shepherd Refuge. One of the participants, writes of her experience: “The most memorable part of the Street Retreat was when we did the Street Patrol and a homeless man said, ‘I’m grateful, not greedy’, when offered a second lunch.” All agreed this was an “eyeopening” experience of what it is like to be homeless and poor on the streets of our largest city.

This year’s Advent Campaign will involve our homeform classes in collecting money to help provide helpful supplies for youth on the streets of Kingston. We will also be adopting families in developing countries through a Catholic Aid organization called “The Chalice”. The campaign ends on Friday, December 17th. In this time of economic crisis, even more people are facing financial hardships. So, I encourage everyone to give generously this year to this and other local charities which are struggling to help the many people who are coming to them seeking food, clothing and adequate shelter. This is a time to recognize God’s presence in the poor and marginalized of our society – and to accept our responsibility to help them in any way that we can. It was after all among these very people that Jesus was born. I pray that God may bless each member of our Holy Cross community with a Blessed Advent Season and a Holy and Merry Christmas.

STUDENTS’ COUNCIL Students’ Council hosted a major event this past month. Ian Tyson, a motivational speaker, presented his oneman show on Monday, November 15th. The “Hero Inside” presentation was very inspiring and entertaining. Mr. Tyson spoke about overcoming obstacles, stepping outside of boundaries, respecting others around you and finding the hero inside yourself. This presentation is best described as a ‘comedy with a message’ as it informed students and made everyone laugh. From Mr. Tyson’s presentation, Students’ Council has asked all teachers to nominate a student who they believe is a “Hero Inside”. Students’ council will select ten of these students and profile them and their accomplishments on the Students’ Council bulletin board. The second school dance took place on Friday, November 19th. The black light theme encouraged close to 400 students to attend wearing white clothing to glow and dance the night away. As we approach the Christmas break, Students’ Council will be selling 2$ gift boxes full of candy and chocolates which will be delivered to students in period one on Thursday, De-cember 16th. Students’ Council would like to wish all members of the Holy Cross community a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We will see you in 2011!Sara Valentino, on behalf of Students’ Council

CALLING ALL KNITTERS & CROCHETERS! Blankets for Canada urgently requires volunteers to knit or crochet 8 inch squares which will be used to create blankets for the homeless in the Kingston area. ECO-CORNERHoliday Greetings from the EcoCorner! The Green Team has just completed our fall energy audits. In these audits we monitor the energy saving behaviour of our staff and students by conducting visits around the school. There are four main areas that we look for: turning off 1) lights, 2) monitors, 3) computer peripherals, and finally 3) if blinds are being closed at night. The results of our fall survey are as follows: 1) 82% of classroom lights are being turned off when not in use, 2) 60% of monitors are being turned off, 3) 72% of computer peripherals are being turned off, and 4) 68% of classroom blinds are being closed. Closing blinds at night can save a significant amount of energy. The Green Team would like to remind staff and students to make these small efforts to help HC become a greener school!ECO-Tip: Make this Christmas a green one. As wrapping paper is not recyclable, consider wrapping your gifts in newspaper (the funnies are best!) or simply put your gift in a reusable bag. Have a Merry Christmas!

REMEMBRANCE DAY– CELEBRATION AND CONTESTS Thanks to Mr. Orser’s music class, to Ms. Check Drumm’s Vo-cal class, Mr. Esford’s communications technology students, and to Ms. Melo-Jordan’s Drama class for such a poignant commemoration of the sacrifices made for us by fallen Canadian soldiers. Thanks also to Mr. Dan Dusome for his technical support.

Congratulations to our Remembrance Day Legion Contest poster winners: in the black and white category, Jonas Lobo took first place, Jordan Taylor came second and Ainslie Plouffe won third. For coloured posters in our region, Jennifer Jang won first place, Hye Rin Lee came second, and Rowan Burke-Lacoursiere was awarded third prize. Well done, artists!

COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY KASSAA GAME OF THE WEEK On Monday, November 15th, SHSM students participated in a training session on the set up, operation, and pack up of TV Cogeco’s mobile television production van. Cogeco’s $250,000 van was recently upgraded with new $75,000 High Definition cameras. The van also boasts a new professional audio mixer, switcher, graphics and instant replay equipment. On Wednesday, November 17, the SHSM students video recorded the EOSSAA Sr. Girls’ Basketball finals hosted at Holy Cross. Two announcers voiced the playbyplay, four video cameras recorded the action, instant replays revealed fouls, and the program was video projected back in the gym live. All three games will air concurrently on TV Cogeco cable channel 13 in the following blocks: Monday, November 22 at 8:30 pm, Tuesday, November 23 at 2:30 pm, Wednesday at 9 pm, and Thursday at noon. The next Game of the Week production will be the Memorial Basketball Tournament on December 15th. The Game of the Week is an excellent experiential learning opportunity for Holy Cross students to operate professional grade equipment. Thank you to our SHSM community partner TV Cogeco and their staff!CPR & FIRST AID CERTIFICATION As part of the rigourous SHSM requirements students must complete six industry recognized certifications to acquire their special red seal graduation diploma. On Friday, November 19th and Saturday, November 20th, SHSM students logged 15 hours participating in a St. John’s Ambulance CPR and First Aid course in the HC gym. Students were trained in a broad range of first aid treatments; from CPR, to a choking victim, to a broken wrist casualty. This certification and all extra SHSM activities are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Student Success initiative. The SHSM program provides grades 11 and 12 students with extra experience which provides students with a greater opportunity to succeed at the secondary school, college, university and workforce level. Students who would like to explore a career in animation, audio production, graphic design, Journalism, photography, video production, and web site design should enroll in the HC SHSM program. Interested Holy Cross students or students from other area schools are invited to contact lead SHSM teacher Mr. John Esford for more information on how to join this focus program at: [email protected]

ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM“The skilled trades are more important to Ontario’s future than ever before. Establishing the College of Trades recognizes the sector’s professionalism, and will help Ontario produce the skilled work ers we need to compete in tomorrow’s economy.” – John Milloy, Minister of Training Colleges and Universities (October 27th, 2009).

What is an Apprenticeship? – An apprenticeship is a handson training program for people who want to work in skilled trades or occupations. About 90% of an apprenticeship involves onthejob training by employers; the remaining 10% involves theoretical training at a college or with a training provider. How long does an Apprenticeship last? – Most apprenticeships take 2 – 5 years, depending on the trade. There are usually 2 or 3 incollege training segments associated with the overall apprenticeship term. Can a student start an apprenticeship while attending high school? – Yes! The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) provides opportunities for senior students (grades 11 and 12) to become registered apprentices while finishing high school. Does the ALCDSB have any examples of OYAP student in-volvement? – Yes! Over the past 5 years there has been sig nificant interest and growth in OYAP enrollment. For example, in 200809, 242 students were enrolled in cooperative education placements in skilled trade areas. Of this group, 46 students were formally registered as apprentices with employers, and 35 received their Level 1 apprenticeship training at either St. Lawrence Col lege, Loyalist College or Local 183. Note: College tuition fees for OYAP students enrolled in the Carpentry, Hairstylist, Brick and Stone Mason, Automotive, Cook, Early Childhood Education, and Construc-tion Craft Worker programs are paid for by MTCU. How do high school students get involved? – Information about OYAP may be obtained from the guidance departments or cooperative education teachers in any of the Board’s high schools. (Web information at www.oyap.com)Who Should Consider OYAP? Students who:•Are at least 16 years of age and have completed 16 credits•Are either in grade 11 or 12 and have an interest in a career in a skilled tradeAdditional support or information is available from Jim Johnston or Paul Denison, OYAP Coordinators with the Board. Jim may be reached at (613) 532-3985; Paul may be reached at (613) 849 – 8550.
