When it opened in the remote MillBasin neigh- borhood, there were plans to build an $ll million permanent museum in the bor- ough's Borough Park section, home to a huge and growing population of Ortho- dox Jews. Sholom Friedmann, the mu- seum's director and CEO, said there's now no fixed date for a move. Anexhibit that officiallyopens at the museum later this month tells the little- known story ofthousands of Jews who found refuge in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, China. A group of teenage girls from a pri- vate Jewish school clustered around the vitrines during a recent visit and learned about the Walkin family, who fled Lithuania on the Trans-Siberian Railwayin1941,landing firstinKobe,Ja- pan, and then in Shanghai. Program co- ordinator Miryam Gordon pointed out sabbath candlesticks adorned with Chi- nese characters. "Dailylifecontinued," she said. "Chil- dren were born. People got married." Reidel's own grandfather, Mike Tress, isfeatured inAmudAish'scollec- tion for his work trying to secure pas- sage for European Jews to the United States or another safe haven. Therearetyped minutes ofan Oct.14, 1944, White House meeting between first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Tress and other rescue activists. They met on a Saturday when religious Jews are not supposed to travel or conduct business, Reidel noted, adding, "When it came to rescuing lives, that supersedes the not traveling or not holding these work meetings on shabbos." Karen Matthews ASSOCIATED PRESS NEWYORK- Faith and survival, not the machinery of death, are the central themes at an atypical Holocaust mu- seum in Brooklyn. The 3-year-old Amud Aish Memorial Museum, located far from the tourist crowds at near the very edge ofthe bor- ough, focuses on the experiences of Or- thodox Jews during and after the Holo- caust. Its collectionincludes letters, diaries, photos and religious items, likea frayed prayershawlwornsecretlybyaprisoner at Auschwitz. Manywere donated by Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox Jews who had stashed the artifacts in basements and attics would not have given them to another museum, Amud Aish staffers said. "Part of that is because their culture is different and they don't patronize mu- seums forthe most part," said Shoshana Greenwald, director of collections. "But here they felt this was a museum that would tell their story and understand where they are coming from." The collection includes the Warsaw Ghetto diary of Hillel Seidman, who wrote about Jews' daily struggle to sur- vive and to practice their religion in the face ofhorrific persecution. "It's a well-known diary,"said Dovid Reidel, the museum's director of re- search. "This is the original." ThefamilyofSeidman, whosurvived the Holocaust and died in1995,gavethe diary to Amud Aish because they "felt other museums will just focus on his general story,"Reidelsaid. "Theyfelthe wouldn't be appreciated from his reli- gious dimension as well." Currently housed in a temporary Program Coordinator Miryam Gordon, left, of the Amud Aish Memorial Museum, in Brooklyn, N.Y., leads a tour of the museum's "Precious Gift: Rescue and Shanghai" exhibit with a group of students from Brooklyn's Nefesh Academy. The museum focuses on Jewish religious practice and the role of faith during the Holocaust. RICHARD DREW/AP better,"saidElizabethKubany,aspokes- woman forthe Museum ofJewish Heri- tage - A Living Memorial to the Holo- caust, located in lower Manhattan. Tova Rosenberg, the creator of "Names, Not Numbers," a Holocaust oral history program, said Amud Aish shows the "spiritual resistance" ofJews who maintained their religion even in the concentration camps. "They were going to keep their reli- gious commandments no matter what," Rosenberg said. "And that isn't por- trayed so much in other museums." Michael Berenbaum, a Holocaust scholar who has served as a consultant to Amud Aish and other museums, said he hopes Amud Aish can reach its core community while also attracting a broader audience that may have little contact with the Orthodoxbeyond pass- ing them on the street. "Iwould hope that lots of non-Jews, non-Orthodox Jews would come to see it in part as a bridge to understanding with these people they liveadjacent to," he said. Dovid Reidel, Director of Research & Archive Division of the Amud Aish Memorial Museum, in Brooklyn, N.Y., displays an 1893 prayer book that was retrieved by a u.S. soldier from the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia during World War II. space downstairs from a home healthcare company, far from city subwaylines, the Amud Aish Memorial Mu-seum has long planned on moving to amore prominent location. When itopened in the remote Mill Basin neigh-borhood, there were plans to build an $llmillion permanent museum in the bor-ough's Borough Park section, home to ahuge and growing population of Ortho-dox Jews. Sholom Friedmann, the mu-seum's director and CEO, said there'snow no fixed date for a move.An exhibit that officiallyopens at the

museum later this month tells the little-known story of thousands of Jews whofound refuge in Japanese-occupiedShanghai, China.A group of teenage girls from a pri-

vate Jewish school clustered around thevitrines during a recent visit andlearned about the Walkin family, whofled Lithuania on the Trans-SiberianRailwayin 1941,landing first in Kobe,Ja-pan, and then in Shanghai. Program co-ordinator Miryam Gordon pointed outsabbath candlesticks adorned with Chi-nese characters."Dailylife continued," she said. "Chil-

dren were born. People got married."Reidel's own grandfather, Mike

Tress, is featured in AmudAish's collec-tion for his work trying to secure pas-sage for European Jews to the UnitedStates or another safe haven. There are typed minutes of an Oct.14,

1944, White House meeting betweenfirst lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Tress andother rescue activists. They met on aSaturday when religious Jews are notsupposed to travel or conduct business,Reidel noted, adding, "When it came torescuing lives, that supersedes the nottraveling or not holding these workmeetings on shabbos."

NEWYORK- Faith and survival, notthe machinery of death, are the centralthemes at an atypical Holocaust mu-seum in Brooklyn. The 3-year-old Amud Aish Memorial

Museum, located far from the touristcrowds at near the very edge of the bor-ough, focuses on the experiences of Or-thodox Jews during and after the Holo-caust.Its collection includes letters, diaries,

photos and religious items, like a frayedprayer shawl worn secretly by a prisonerat Auschwitz.Manywere donated by Orthodox and

ultra-Orthodox Jews who had stashedthe artifacts in basements and atticswould not have given them to anothermuseum, Amud Aish staffers said."Part of that is because their culture

is different and they don't patronize mu-seums for the most part," said ShoshanaGreenwald, director of collections. "Buthere they felt this was a museum thatwould tell their story and understandwhere they are coming from."The collection includes the Warsaw

Ghetto diary of Hillel Seidman, whowrote about Jews' daily struggle to sur-vive and to practice their religion in theface of horrific persecution."It's a well-known diary," said Dovid

Reidel, the museum's director of re-search. "This is the original."The family of Seidman, who survived

the Holocaust and died in 1995,gave thediary to Amud Aish because they "feltother museums will just focus on hisgeneral story,"Reidel said. "They felt hewouldn't be appreciated from his reli-gious dimension as well."Currently housed in a temporary

"Names, Not Numbers," a Holocaustoral history program, said Amud Aishshows the "spiritual resistance" of Jewswho maintained their religion even inthe concentration camps."They were going to keep their reli-

gious commandments no matter what,"Rosenberg said. "And that isn't por-trayed so much in other museums."Michael Berenbaum, a Holocaust

scholar who has served as a consultantto Amud Aish and other museums, saidhe hopes Amud Aish can reach its corecommunity while also attracting abroader audience that may have littlecontact with the Orthodox beyond pass-ing them on the street."Iwould hope that lots of non-Jews,

non-Orthodox Jews would come to seeit in part as a bridge to understandingwith these people they live adjacent to,"he said.
