Education can be Dangerous

Inhumane• The Holocaust is without doubt the most grisly part of our Civil History.

Everything about the process was inhumane.• Some of the newly liberated Jews went as far as to rip the arms and legs off Nazis

and others in the camps.• People were identified by a number, not a name.• Toilet trips were limited and malnourishment led to bowel disorders such as

diaorroeah. The Jews were not allowed to wash their clothes – the more humiliation, the better.

• Experiments were carried out on children like they were animals in a lab. Many of the early medical advancements were due to Nazi cruelty. They’d practice things like organ transplant, and seeing how long a child could survive in boiling/ freezing water.

• Tearing familys apart during the selection process – anyone with a disability or above a certain age would be immediately disposed of.

• One mother remembers walking into the gas chamber with a new baby in her arms. Laughing, the SS guards removed it from her and smashed it against the chamber wall before her eyes, holding it by the ankles.

• Even after the death camps were liberated the cruelty continued – American troops forced local villagers to bury the bodies of the victims as punishment for their passivity.

How could our ancestors let this happen ?

There was many who followed the Nazi regime making life for the Jews a nightmare. However there were also many who did there best to prevent such injustices. You may already know about Oscar Schindler who saved more than 1200 Jews by buying them from SS guards, but he was not the only one. Children were hidden amongst German families. We also had our own savior here in England; Nicholas Winton helped 669 children escape from Prague to London on 8 trains. Sadly, the 9 th train with 250 children aboard never left Prague. Nicholas paid British families £50 to take these children in, as well as covering the cost of their transport.

The Discrimination Continues...

On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops.

Sadly, this was not the end of the nightmare. Many people returned home to find their homes repossessed and their possessions vandalised.

We visited a graveyard in Poland where the gravestones had been ripped up and used by locals to pave the streets. The disrespect was evident.

Pass the Message -

It wont be long before there are no holocaust survivors left, and when we

have nothing to remind us of Nazi brutality and discrimination – that is when we are at

risk of experiencing it again.

Deniers of the Holocaust

• The President of Iran, a public denier of the Holocaust asks the question – why are we so ‘obsessed’ with the Holocaust alone, when more people have died in other wars around the world.

Any ideas?

Page 12: Holocaust

The Nazis succeeded in not only getting away with the Holocaust, but also making thousands of people think the Jews deserved it.

It is one of the biggest examples of racist intolerance ever recorded.

The design element to the concentration camps makes the Nazi message clear – people deserve to die because of their beliefs and the quicker it can be done the better.

Anthony Walker• Despite the lessons we should have learned from the

holocaust, Racism is still a killer.Anthony Walker was studying for his A levels, and in 2005 was murdered because of the colour of his skin.

• "I have to forgive them. I can't feel anger and hatred, because that is what killed my son“ (mother of Anthony)

Cruelty thrives when good men are still ; Education is lethal when altering the will.

Your Head and Your heart- they’re yours to ownNot to swap or dispose of, as regime takes hold.

Cling to your morals and let nought block the way,‘tween the right you believe in and the right stole away.

It should not be leaked into, the psyche; the mindBe strong, stand to guard it – it’s their axe to grind.

Humanities blessed , the true gift of choice Is threatened and preyed on when man has no voice,

So know what it is that you stand for this life,And know that there isn’t a ‘maybe’ or ‘price’,

For it ’s this that transforms one evil ideal, To something much bigger- and then it is real.

There’s nought more important than moral defence,Be smart to the leadings of lies, and of tempt,

And one day when asked to compromise low,

Be cautious, remember, it’s the brave who say no.

Page 15: Holocaust

So what can we learn?

Page 16: Holocaust

Utilise the Lessons:

• Its an old one but – don’t laugh along with a bully

• Remember to have conviction in what YOU think is right.

• Remember racism is not solely to do with skin colour.

• Remember everybody is an individual.
