By BARBARA LEECH Special to the union Leader All businesses have a story, but e American Bead Collection, an offspring of Sunapee Granite Works, has a journey. Simply put, there is much more to the busi- ness than beautiful ornaments, jewelry and beads. Back in 2011, Bill Stocker and his wife Pa- mela, a special education teacher, owned the quarry business at the base on Mount Sunapee. Pamela said in April of that year, after 20 years in teaching, she had a sud- den, unexplained feeling that it was time for change. Sitting in a math class at work she said she heard a little voice, which we all have in our head, and it said something significant. “It’s time to be done.” Pamela said she heard the same sen- tence again later that day, and it compelled her to walk down to the main office and resign her position at the end of that school year. “Most of us have that inner voice that gives us direction and insight, but we brush its guidance aside,” she said. “I knew I had to listen. I just knew.” Bill supported the decision and what followed was Pamela preparing for a new beginning, one with a change in health insurance. Gina Anderson, dog lover and the creative cook running Good Paws Bakery & Gifts in Windham, has created a tasty solution. Anderson bakes delicious dog treats, using only three simple, natural ingredi- ents that dogs love. She says she got started in the business as a way to strengthen the connection between people and the com- panion animals they love. “Our pets are intelligent, emotional and sentient little beings. It just blows me away as I learn more about their perceptual abilities and some of the work that they do within society,” she said. “It is great to be a part of showing pets some love and appre- ciation.” e first step in starting her business was speaking to another pet treat baker about her growing business. With a little mentor- ing and a bit of her own creative inspira- tion, Anderson decided to modify some basic treat recipes to make them grain-free. Such sentiments are not expressed with sarcasm, however, as he has made a business out of carving hand- made hiking and walking sticks. “For years, I would give gifts to people when I would go to a house-warming party and people loved them,” he said. “I decided to make a business out of it.” Selling 200-plus sticks since he formally began his business with a price range between $75 and $90, each individual stick results from meticulous attention to detail. Noting he carves the type of wood and where he found it into each hiking stick, Essensa said some creations take up to two days to carve, with all requiring five coats of polyurethane. “e polyurethane strengthens and pro- tects them,” he said. “I also sand the sticks in between each coat. I burn the bottom of them. ey are indestructible.” As for his most popular sticks, he said the 48 4,000 Foot Peaks of New Hampshire is his best-selling item. On the stick, all 48 4,000-foot peaks in New Hampshire are carved into it. e Appalachian Trail Stick is another favorite for people, as the Appalachian trail — from Mt. All businesses have a story, but The American Bead Collection, an offspring of Sunapee Granite Works, has a journey. Simply put, there is much more to the busi-ness than beautiful ornaments, jewelry and beads.
