Holiday Shoppingfinding the perfect g i f t

A good gift shows you care enough about someone to really consider their interests and likes. Here are some ideas to focus your thoughts and get you started toward finding the gift of their dreams.

First of all, decide on your budget. This will help to narrow your choices from the overwhelming to the manageable.

Forget the ho-hum, find something unique! The easiest way to do this is to shop locally. By visiting a Central Coast boutique or gallery, rather than a chain store, you are guaranteed to find an exclusive, exceptional gift.

Consider your intention. Do you want to give something they will cherish forever, or something fun that will make them laugh?

What is their overall style and personality? Are they elegant, flamboyant, quirky, eccentric, traditional? Do they like practical things they can use or would they appreciate something lavish?

Think about the colors they choose to wear, the accessories they like. Do they like chunky jewelry, fun prints, or understated, classic styles? Visit local jewelers and boutiques for the latest trends and to talk to the experts.

Take their circumstances into consideration. Perhaps they have a new home that needs decorating, a new job that requires a professional wordrobe, or a busy schedule and they might enjoy some pampering and beauty products.

Give a personalized gift certificate. We’re not talking Target here, be sure the gift certificate matches the interests of the recipient. This is a great idea for someone who enjoys services, such as massages or pedicures. It’s also perfect for those on the go – if you know their favorite spot to dine, ask if they offer gift certificates. And for someone who has

everything, consider an overnight stay away from home. The

Central Coast is packed with beautiful resorts that will offer

a luxurious yet convenient retreat.

Give a gift you can personalize. A frame could hold a

cherished photo or poem or a photo album could be filled

with photos from a recent event. You could even put together

a basket of gifts. For example, if the recipient has just

relocated, you could fill a hamper with relevant treats and

useful products - in pretty packaging, of course!

What are their hobbies or interests? If they like making

jewelry, why not find them a book about it, and include some

pretty beads and jewelry making tools. If they like gardening,

how about a gardener’s cart full of things like gardening

gloves, spades, seeds, gardener’s hand cream and a book

about plants? Or, a specialized cooking class and apron for

an aspiring chef? With the great shopping available on the

Central Coast the possibilities are endless!

California BlondeIf you’re trying to buy a gift for that special someone in your life who has everything, a trip to California Blonde is in order. As soon as you step foot into this cavern of bric-a-brac, your mind will reel as you are confronted with possibilities at every turn. Should you go for the inflatable moose head, the dancing Hawaiian lamp or the one-of-a-kind, hand-painted telephone? Owner Joy Baker strives to keep her inventory fresh and original. Since she adjusts her inventory every two weeks, if you see something you like, you gotta grab it.1137 Garden Street, San Luis Obispo (805) 783-2890

Shop LocalKeep money in your neighborhood.Locally owned businesses recirculate 70% more money back into the local community than chain stores.

Get better service. In a local business, you know the person behind the counter, and they know you. They have a deep understanding of the products they sell and they take time to serve their customers.

Create and keep jobs.Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally, and small businesses are far less likely to pull up stakes and move operations to another city or country, taking their jobs with them.

Help out the environment.Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases, requiring less transportation, and they generally set up shop in commercial corridors rather than developing on the fringe. This means less sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, and pollution.

Invest in your community groups.Nonprofits receive an average 350% more support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses.

Vote with your dollars. If each household redirected just $100 of planned holiday spending from chain stores to locally owned merchants, the local economic impact would be in the millions of dollars.

Holiday Diningeat, dr ink and be merry

Whether you need someone to cater your holiday party, you are looking for a bite to eat during your holiday shopping, or you and yours are ready for a romantic dinner for two, dining on the Central Coast cannot be beat!

If you have the date selected and you are ready to start planning your holiday party, now is the time to find a caterer to suit your needs. If you do not already have someone in mind, begin your research in local publications (like this one!) and online. Ask for testimonials and view them as an indicator of the company’s past experience and expertise. If you have been at an affair where the canapés were fabulous, or a friend cannot help enthusing about how amazing the dinner was at a catered event, capitalize on it; your own experience of a caterer’s food or a personal suggestion can often lead you to a company that fits the bill. Call to set up meetings with at least three or four companies to discuss your requirements, making sure you have asked if they are available on the date of your holiday party and checked that they can manage to cater for your estimated numbers. When you are choosing your menu think in-season and local. Not only will it be more budget friendly, it will be tastier, too!

If you are looking for a romantic dinner for two, you just need to grab a quick-but-delicious bite to eat, or perhaps you’re planning a holiday event at a restaurant, here a few things to keep in mind when choosing your venue.

First things first, how is the food? Fresh local produce is a must for great meals. The Central Coast offers an abundance of fine dining restaurants run by reputable chefs who use top ingredients. Be sure to check out the restaurants listed on the pages that follow.

Don’t forget ambiance. What is the noise level of the restaurant? Is it so quiet that it is uncomfortable? Is there music in the background? How is the lighting? Do candles surround you or are you under cafeteria lighting? All of these things can add up to a more or less formal dining experience – and your restaurant decision will depend on what you are looking for.

And, of course, you will need to consider the cost. Price does not always indicate quality. Many small, locally owned restaurants provide delicious, fresh food at reasonable prices. But if you are looking for a hostess, a waiter and a sommelier to cater to your needs, rather than a countertop to place your order, the Central Coast eateries will not let you down. The beauty of dining at our local restaurants is the wide array of delicious food just waiting for you to enjoy.

Health & Beautybeat the winter blues

As the cold winds blow, the sunblock and conditioners go back in the medicine cabinet and we feast instead of exercise, right? Wrong! Your beauty and health routines continue - but the rules change.

By the time the first leaf falls, it seems like you can scratch your name on your dry skin. Indoor heating combined with cold windy weather take a toll on your skin. To ward off dry rough patches include exfoliation into your daily routine. Using either a dry or wet loofah followed up with a high quality moisturizer will do the trick to keep skin soft and smooth.

And just becaused they are covered by socks and shoes does not mean your feet shouldn’t be touchably soft. Schedule a regular pedicure, and for a little extra treatment, once a week at night apply a foot cream and wear socks to bed. If your hands are feeling especially chapped, schedule a manicure, a parafin hand treatment and add the same routine into your evening - use a rich hand cream and wear cotton gloves to bed.

And, think soft and smooth for your face as well. Visit your local aesthetician for a moisturizing facial, add a daily moisturizer to your foundation (we recommend one with 15 SPF), use a night cream and consider introducing an eye cream into your routine. If you have the pale skin blues, consider an airbrush tan and use a bronzer on your checks and across the bridge of your nose to give a lightly sun-kissed glow. And don’t forget the sun, even in winter you still need sunscreen.

As for your health, while you are bundled up in winter, with your body camouflaged, it may seem difficult to avoid unwanted weight gain. Cakes, pies, candy, and alcohol are everywhere you go. And you may be inside more, playing Scrabble instead of beach volleyball. In addition, it gets dark earlier in winter - people get bored or depressed and nibble. Winter was why comfort food was invented! Some people say our metabolisms change in winter, but we can’t find too much scientific evidence of that.

When it comes to winter eating, be sure you get enough vitamin D, which comes from the sun and from dairy products. Studies show that young people, as well as elders, suffer vitamin D deficiencies in winter, when people are not outside as much and the sun is not sufficiently strong to cause the body to synthesize the vitamin.

And, while holiday feasts are irresistible, be sure to monitor the amount of food you’re consuming. Enjoy a sample of all the delicious treats, but don’t overindulge. Be sure to drink plenty of water, sometimes that feeling of an insatiable appetite is coming from dehydration not hunger. Instead of following up that hearty meal with a tv episode, try a brisk walk. A little self-discipline and self-care will go a long way during the cold winter months.
