"One of Us"Lucky old New Zealand to have such a Prime Minister! When fifty Muslims were gunneddown in their mosques, instantly Jacinda Adern identified the most urgent issue. Andspeaking, that same day, of the murdered immigrants, she said: "They are us!". Nosecond-class citizenship in New Zealand, no tolerated minorities! These new-comers,for all their religious and cultural differences, are now one-hundred per cent Kiwis. And, on the same day as the tragedy occurring, she changed the country's gun-laws, inspite of the influential 'gun lobby' in New Zealand. How reassuring it must be forimmigrants to know that their safety really matters to the host country!A little over twenty five years ago, shortly before I arrived here, a group of Bosnians, refugees from violence, found a warm welcome in Appleby; were housed and lookedafter until they move on to a permanent new home. Friendships were formed, the, whichcontinue to this day. It is a golden moment in the Town's history. It's difficult for us in our position of security to imagine what it must feel like to find yourselfhomeless and stateless. But imagine it we must. The only way to find entrance into theheart and mind of my alien neighbour is to exercise my God-given faculty of imagination.Shakespeare said: "And let us … on your imaginary forces work.". And only through theworking of our imagination can we ever enter the reality of our neighbour's heart.God bless us all.

Roger Collinson.

Fosterers are part of ateam, with their own social worker and contact with other carers. Withover 600 children needing foster families, more volunteers are alwaysneeded There are a number of different schemes:● Short Term Fostering: children are looked after until family

circumstances change to enable them to return home.● Long Term Fostering: children need a substitute permanent family.● Approved Support (Respite) Care: children are looked after for short

periods, usually weekends or holidays to provide temporary breaksfor their carers/families.

● Short Breaks (Shared Care): carers are linked with families whohave one or more children with disabilities, to provide regularshort-term care.

● Homestays. Families with room to spare supply supportedaccommodation for young people in work, training or employmentwho are leaving the care system and learning to live independently.

Volunteers Needed to Support Familieswith Young ChildrenCumbria Family Support (Note new name - as they used to be EastCumbria Family Support) need more volunteers to support familieswho are going through a difficult patch, and have young or primary agechildren.Volunteers are carefully ‘matched’ with a family and then visit weeklyto provide practical/emotional support to parent/s, and/or children asneeded. Support might involve looking after a child to enable a parentto attend appointments which benefit the whole family; or focus onbuilding positive relationships by facilitating family activities. Sometimessupport may focus on helping parents to build on their strengths, andfeel confident about thedecisions they make. These are just examples, and each family’s needsare individually assessed. To use that well- worn phrase – ‘we do whatit says on the tin’- we support families. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and are of all ages andexperience. They respect family confidentiality, are non-judgementaland have been at the heart of our organisation since we began 24years ago.Full training and ongoing support is given, and travel expenses paid.If you would like to know more, please contact our Eden Family SupportCoordinator, Sarah Craig on 01768 593102; or emails a r a h @ c u m b r i a f a m i l y s u p p o r t . o r g . u kwww.cumbriafamilysupport.org.ukTwitter - @CumbriaFS Facebook - Cumbria Family Support

Appleby ClubsAppleby-in-Westmorland SocietyCUMBRIA – AN INDUSTRIAL COUNTY?When thanking the speaker for the evening, Appleby-in-WestmorlandSociety committee member Barry McKay made this interestingobeservation. Certainly Cumbria is seen primarily as a tourist destinationnowadays, but a couple of centuries earlier things were very different. With the raw material for textile manufacture provided by farming, coppicing of woodland generated charcoal burning, bobbin-making andtanning also took place. Power from water wheels and later steam alsospawned iron furnaces, forges and the manufacture of paper, gunpowder, snuff and grinding of grain. Some of the mills constructedthen changed their uses over time. One of the aspects of processing rock and minerals led to the localgypsum industry, like many of Cumbria’s activities initially run by amyriad of small companies. Guest speaker for the evening GrahamBrooks told how gypsum (calcium sulphate) was quarried in the KirkbyThore and Carlisle areas to make Plaster of Paris (so called becausethe process originated in that city), hard wall and finishing plaster. Muchlater came plasterboard, still currently used extensively in building. Otherapplications were as fertiliser, with mixed results even after the additionof guano – seagull droppings - and more prosaically doorstep whitening. In 1837 Joseph Robinson was a stonemason and builder who made hisown plaster and diversified into baking and flour-making, although theinevitable connection with adulterating the latter with the basic ingredientof plaster was never proved. Not until the 1950s was harlite developed;it made the original Plaster of Paris lighter and more malleable.Inevitably over the years the small enterprises found themselves underthreat and in 1890 in an attempt to survive they formed themselves intothe Gypsum Association, based in Carlisle. At around the same time, gypsum began to be drift-mined rather than quarried. Despite theirefforts, most of them were taken over by Gothams, one of whosesubsidiaries, the United Sulphuric Acid Company supplied First WorldWar munitions factories and found world-wide markets post-war.Nowadays the Kirkby Thore plant, owned by a French company, is usedfor processing gypsum, with much of their output transported by road, although a siding still remains at their works beside the Settle-Carlislerailway line.Chairman Chris Wilson closed the meeting by welcoming back hispredecessor Davina Osman after her recent illness. Looking ahead tothe AGM he said that a new Treasurer would be needed as well asanother committee member, as Rosemary Spence and Ian Campbellrespectively were standing down from these posts after long service tothe Society.16th May at 7pm. April Solution (May Solution overleaf)

Notre-Dame de Paris,…

…often referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is amedieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the 4tharrondissement of Paris, France. The cathedral is consideredto be one of the finest examples of French Gothicarchitecture. Its innovative use of the rib vault and flyingbuttress, its enormous and colourful rose windows, andthe naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration setit apart from the earlier Romanesque style. The cathedral was begun in 1160 under Bishop Maurice deSully and was largely complete by 1260, though it wasmodified frequently in the ensuing centuries. In the 1790s,Notre-Dame suffered desecration during the FrenchRevolution; much of its religious imagery was damaged ordestroyed. In 1804, the cathedral was the site ofthe Coronation of Napoleon I as Emperor of France, andwitnessed the baptism of Henri, Count of Chambord in 1821and the funerals of several presidents of the Third FrenchRepublicPopular interest in the cathedral blossomed soon after thepublication, in 1831, of Victor Hugo's novel The Hunchbackof Notre-Dame. This led to a major restoration projectbetween 1844 and 1864, supervised by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who added the cathedral's iconic spire. The liberationof Paris was celebrated within Notre-Dame in 1944 with thesinging of the Magnificat. Beginning in 1963, the façade ofthe cathedral was cleaned of centuries of soot and grime, returning it to its original colour. Another cleaning andrestoration project was carried out between 1991 and 2000.The cathedral is one of the most widely recognized symbolsof the city of Paris and the French nation. As the cathedral ofthe Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra,or chair, of the Archbishop of Paris (Michel Aupetit). 12 millionpeople visit Notre-Dame annually, making it the most visitedmonument in Paris. While undergoing renovation and restoration, the cathedralcaught fire on 15th April this year and sustained significantdamage, including the destruction of two-thirds of the roofand the spire. Both towers were safe. Because of the ongoingrenovation, the copper statues that were normally on the nowcollapsed spire had been removed from the building a weekprior. One firefighter was seriously injured during the blaze. The entirety of the Île de la Cité was evacuated as fears ofthe fire spreading mounted. Many artefacts were savedbefore the fire spread to other parts of the cathedral. FrenchPresident Emmanuel Macron announced that Notre-Damewill be rebuilt, stating: "It's part of the fate, the destiny ofFrance, and our common project over the coming years AndI am committed to it.

Jebbeh Konneh’s StoryJebbeh is one of the kindest people youwillever meet. She has a warm smileand motherlytouch. But her life has beenincrediblytough.Recently, Jebbeh’s sister, Fatmata, waspregnant in a village nearby. When shewentinto labour there were so fewambulancesthat Fatmata had no choice but towalk forthree hours, under the baking sun, tothenearest hospital. The road was long, andshestruggled to keep walking. With every step,Fatmata feared forher life and the life of herbaby. Jebbeh told us: ‘My sister wascryingout with hunger. She died on the side of theroad. She nevergave birth.’No woman should die in childbirth. But forJebbeh, thiswasn’t just any woman. Thiswas her sister – her strength, hercomfort, her own. Jebbeh herself is heavily pregnant. As her babygrows, it’s not joy that fills herheart, but fear. Pregnancy shouldbe a timeof joy, not a time of fear. But instead of buying new babyclothes,Jebbeh has gone to her sister’s burial. Insteadofexcitement and joy, she feels pain andsorrow. She cries, and wecry with her. This Christian Aid Week with your support,we cancontinue working alongsidecommunities like Jebbeh’s to buildbigger, better health centres. Just £300 couldprovide a deliverybed and mattress for anew health centre, ensuring mumscandeliver their babies safely and live long andhappy lives.

Tenneh Bawoj’s StoryTenneh Bawoh rests her three-month-oldbaby Ansumana on her lap. Shebounces himon her knee and he giggles happily. Tennehand her baby arevisiting a temporary healthcentre in Sierra Leone for a check-up.They’reattended to by nurse Judith, who deliveredthe baby in this room, just a few monthsbefore. Thankfully, both mum and baby arehealthy. But tragically, Tenneh has loved andlost a baby before.A few years ago, when Tenneh was pregnantwith her first child, there was no healthcentreor trained nurse in her village. Withno other choice, Tenneh was takenby hermother to a traditional birth attendant. Forthe two days of herlabour, Tenneh wasin agony. She fell unconscious, and wasbleedingheavily. When at last she woke up,her whole body was swollen. In thedaysand months afterwards, Tenneh still feltvery weak. Her babywouldn’t breastfeed.Tragically, her little one died when he wasjust threemonths old.‘I will never forget that day,’ Tenneh recalls.‘I felt sick likeI’ve never been sick before. Iloved my baby so much.’Thankfully, whenTenneh was pregnant asecond time, things had changed forgood.Christian Aid’s partner RADA saw thatTenneh, and many mumslike her, were indesperate need of healthcare. And that’show nurse Judithcame to save lives. Withexpert love and care, nurse JudithdeliveredTenneh’s baby safely. But the health centre where nurseJudithworks is not enough to meet every need. The roof leaks. There areonly two deliverybeds. And when mums come to delivertheir babies atnight, Judith has no light tosee by. This makes giving birth evenmoredangerous.Every day, 10 women die from giving birthin SierraLeone. But we believe every life isworth fighting for. This Christian AidWeek, you could help give more mums and babiesacross the world thegreatest gift – the gift oflife. With your support, Tenneh’scommunitycould build a bigger, better health centre tohelp ensure moremums see their babiesgrow and enjoy fullness of life. Nurse Judithsays:‘I know that for women here, thanksto Christian Aid, our situation isgoing tochange.’

The legacy of two incredible womenReadingsActs 9:36-43 - Ritual cleansing•When Tabitha/Dorcas became ill and died, her body waswashed in the customary way. Thispractice is also part ofdeath rituals in Sierra Leone. During the Ebola outbreak in2014-2016, itwas very difficult for communities to stop ritualwashing in order to prevent the spread of thedisease.

It was thanks to ministers such as the Rev Christiana Sutton-Koroma, who partnered withChristian Aid during the Ebolacrisis, that the message to prevent the spread of diseasebystopping ritual washing was heard. She was instrumental inleading safe and dignified burialsfor people who were killed byEbola without the need for the ritual washing. When the Rev Christiana was asked to share a message ofinspiration with the churchesof Britain and Ireland this ChristianAid Week, she turned to the book of Acts and repeatedthewords of Paul’s dream from Acts 16: ‘come to Macedonia andhelp us’. We too drawinspiration from Acts as we respond toher invitation to participate in the mission of God thisChristianAid Week in our communities and in Sierra Leone.Grief that changes to joy• There is much grief in this story from the book of Acts, grieffor the loss of the generous andskillful Dorcas. The grief of alife cut short is all too resonant with the stories beingsharedfrom Sierra Leone this Christian Aid Week, the deathof mothers in childbirth and babies ininfancy.Dorcas had clearly touched the lives of those gathered aroundher at the time of her death. The stories of her good works, hergenerosity and her skills gushed from those who mournedher.Hers was a life that had already left a legacy in the lives ofthose around her, we can onlyimagine how generously andabundantly she lived after being raised from death! When we encounter our own vulnerability, maybe throughsickness, life-altering or evennear-death experiences, we oftenresolve to live in a more intentional or generous way.BerylMargaret Hadwin is one such inspiration. Beryl was amidwife, a nurse, a matron – healthcarewas something thatwas important to her. When Beryl awoke from an operation in later life, a nurse wasthere for her, holding her hand.In that moment Beryl resolvedto leave a gift in her Will to make a difference tohealthcareacross the world through the work of Christian Aid.Her healthcare gift is now helping make adifference to the livesof mums in Sierra Leone.Through her gift, Beryl is able to extend her hand to touch thelives of others so they too willknow the comfort of a handholding theirs when they need it. Whether it’s collectingthisChristian Aid Week, taking the campaign action to dropSierra Leone’s Ebola debt, joining usin prayer fortransformation in Sierra Leone, leaving us a gift in your Will –it all allows us toreach out into the world, be there for othersand make a difference.A legacy of lifeThis Christian Aid Week, we are all invited to participate in thelegacy of Dorcas and of Berylas we get to give generously tothe work of partners such as RADA who are working toimprovethe healthcare in Sierra Leone. They are building healthcentres so mothers no longerhave to walk long distances togive birth, and are training healthcare professionals.Share Jebbeh’s story (see page 2). Withyou by their side, pregnant mums likeJebbeh can now hope to deliver safely, withthe gift of a better health clinic.Hopefully she will not suffer thesametragic fate of her sister who died givingbirth on the wayto a health centre thatwas a three-hour walk away. And thanks to healthcare professionalssuch as nurse Judith, supported by RADA,mums like Jebbeh and Tennehhavesomeone they can rely on. Nurse Judithhas helpedTenneh give birth to a healthybaby boy and recover from thetraumaticbirth and sad death of her first baby.May Dorcas and Beryl inspire us all toconsider what legacywe might give in ourtime, talent and resources this ChristianAidWeek.

1st May - James the Less: quietson of AlphaeusOne thing for sure: the apostles were not self-obsessed. In fact, many a church historian haswished that they had left us just a few more personaldetails about themselves in the New Testament.James the Less is an excellent example. This is the name we give to James the son ofAlphaeus, but – beyond that, who was he?Sometimes he is identified as the James whosemother stood by Christ on the cross. Sometimes heis thought to be the James who was ‘brother of theLord’. Sometimes he is thought to be the James who saw the risen Christ. He has also, and often, been called the first bishop of Jerusalem. Andfinally, sometimes James the Less has been thought of as the author ofthe Epistle of James. But – who knows? If none of these identifications are correct, we knowpractically nothing about James the Less. So perhaps on this day wecan simply recall ‘all’ of the James’ above, and thank God for the motherwho stood by the cross, the brother that supported Jesus, the apostlewho saw his risen Lord and gave his life to proclaiming the truth, the firstbishop of Jerusalem, and the author of the marvellous Epistle of James.Whether it was one James or several, they were all faithful to Jesus, andproclaimed Him as the Messiah. So perhaps that should make themJames the More!James the Less has been given an unusual iconographic emblem: afuller’s club. Tradition has it that he was beaten to death with one, afterbeing sentenced by the Sanhedrin in AD62. In England there are only26 churches which are dedicated to James the Less.(Forgive me - as a long time resident of Ormside, whose local saint isJames the Less, I couldn’t resist this! Ed.)

Looking up into HeavenThe Church remembers the Ascension this month – when Jesus wentback up into heaven. But where is heaven? How will we experience it?The Bible is clear that Christians can expect a personal, conscious lifeafter death. It is clear that heaven is NOT some wispy, anaemic realmwith a few clouds floating around, but as real as oceans and suns, windsand planets. The Bible tells us that the triumph of Christ over dark powerswill release the cosmos from sin’s bondage (Rom. 8.21) and we willbecome more, not less, embodied. Heaven will be physically perfect, sparklingly alive, and stunningly beautiful. The apostle Paul called the present “whole creation” as groaning like awoman in labour, waiting to be delivered. Those who believe in Jesushave the “first-fruits of the Spirit” and can expect bodily redemption andsharing the glory of the risen Lord (Rom. 8:15-25). The apostle Peterspoke of “a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness”.(2 Pet. 3.13).For Jesus’s triumph over death signals our own victory. Death is not thelast word, life is! And it will be life that is personal, conscious continuationbeyond death.
