Outrigger canoe paddling is an exciting, exhilarating and challenging experience that promotes fitness, teamwork and general wellbeing through a healthy outdoor lifestyle.

The Hobart Outrigger Canoe Club (HOCC) was the first outrigger canoe club in Tasmania being formed in May 2006 to provide the sport of Outrigger Canoeing to the Hobart community. HOCC is located at Montrose Bay. We are a strong family based club (with members of both genders and all ages between 11 and 61 years). Our ethos is to be inclusive and we do this by ensuring that every session is structured to ensure that each person gets something from the session. This statement is justified in that 100% of members in 2009/10 paddling year renewed their membership. In the last 6 months we have had an increase in our membership base of 75%. During the 2010/11 paddling year we have had the greatest growth of any club in our Zone, a growth rate of 108%. Whilst the club is participating in more racing regattas, we remain a community focused club as we see this as a way to ensure we can continue to grow. The Australian Outrigger Canoe Association (AOCRA) is the peak governing body of the sport in Australia and provides the sport on a national basis. HOCC is placed in the Victorian Zone along with two other Tasmanian based clubs, eight Victorian clubs and one South Australian club. We are proudly associated with the Montrose Yacht Club, who we share facilities with.

Why sponsor HOCC?

HOCC is offering sponsors an opportunity to market their business to the community by advertising on club assets specifically; club owned canoes, trailer (new club trailer being designed and built) and a sponsor board located at Montrose.

The Outrigger canoes are 13 metres in length and make an imposing sight, even more so when painted in your corporate colours and logos.

The club trains at least three times a week all year round. During summer months we can be found participating in or visiting many festivals and events in and around the Hobart water front.

We have been seen at: • Sandy Bay Regatta • Hobart Regatta • Australia Day events at Kingston Beach • Derwent Valley Autumn Festival • Seafarers Festival • Wooden Boat Festival • Taste of Tasmania

As members of AOCRA and specifically the Victorian Zone, HOCC participates in regattas and club training days across the state including location such as Burnie, Somerset, Boat Harbour, Devonport, Lindisfarne, Bellerive and Montrose.

This results in great exposure for your business to locals and visitors to our state as the canoes are transported on the trailer to and from all of these events which acts as a mobile billboard for your business and the sport of Outrigging.

On an annual basis HOCC conducts a Corporate/Community/Family Regatta where we introduce people to the sport of Outrigging through a fun day of paddling. Crews of 5 people come together in different configurations to paddle against other crews. This event also provides your company with not only advertising exposure but the opportunity to bring your employees together, along with your family members to enjoy the day.

Investing in a partnership with HOCC will provide your organisation with significant exposure to a broad range of potential and current clients which represents a return on your investment.

Your sponsorship will help support club activities, and assist in maintaining our valued equipment and canoes.

We have four packages from which your business may choose (see details on next page).

The Outrigger Canoe had its origins over 3,000 years ago as the principal form of transport for the people of Oceania, Polynesia, and numerous other Island cultures.

Traditional outrigger canoes were carved from a single tree-trunk. The outrigger “ama” (float) is the essential modification that sets outrigger canoes apart from all others. It evolved through thousands of years of experimentation and it is the most efficient way to stabilize a dug out canoe. Traditionally, the ama has always been fitted onto the left side of the canoe and this remains the same for paddling today. The ama is attached to the canoe hull by way of two ‘iako’s’ (canoe spreader bars). Many traditional skills are associated with the both the rigging and paddling of outrigger canoes. In relation to rigging, skill and knowledge of lashing techniques and the trim of the ama and iako in relation to the canoe are skills which can take many years of experience to develop. It is this adherence to tradition that makes outrigger canoe racing and paddling unique in a world where many traditions and cultural recognitions have been done away with. As a result of this the sport attracts people seeking not only an outdoor ocean orientated sport, but one which offers deeper cultural and spiritual significance. Outrigger canoe racing is a relatively young sport in Australia. The first club in Australia was formed in 1978 on the Gold Coast and Outrigger canoe racing has now become one of the fastest growing aquatic sports in Australia.
