President’s Report It is always nice to receive feedback from communities who benefit from the hard work of

Club members. In this case, it was the Bruny Island Community Association writing to the

Club to thank our members who participated in the recent track clearing carried out on the

Slides Track. A donation to cover expenses of chainsaws and travel was enclosed with the

letter.

In recent Circulars, I have outlined details of vacancies within the Club structure and

invited members to help us by volunteering for these positions. The response has been

exceptional and we have been able to quickly fill the vacancies. I am hoping you will be

able to help us again.

▪ Assistant Secretary - Lee is heading overseas to take up a volunteer position and

we are looking for her replacement to start in June. The position is part of the

HWC Executive Committee and is responsible for taking the minutes of the

Executive Meetings. Please contact Lee Parker (contact details at the back of the

Circular) if you would like more information

▪ Trip Programmers – Weekend MM – Chris thinks it is time to step back from this

role and we would like 2 members to fill his position on a job share basis. The

weekend MM walking programme is currently in place to the end of May and

Chris will be on hand to help the new programmers settle into the role. Please

contact Chris Rathbone (contact details at the back of the Circular) if you would

like more information.

If you would like to express your interest in either of these positions, please email your

details to [email protected]

Looking ahead, there are 2 reminders:

1. The training for new and prospective Coordinators is being held on Sunday 28

May 2017. If you have been thinking about making the step to coordinating a

walk or if you have already coordinated several walks and would like to learn

more, then I strongly encourage you to attend this training. See Page 8 in the

Circular for more details.

2. The survey of members to learn more about your preferences and suggestions

for improving our walking programme is open until the end of March. Please take

this opportunity to have your say on what happens in your club. The survey is on

line on the following link https://goo.gl/forms/OK5ZlzcD8pUQt59x1 .

See you on the track.

Philip Le Grove, President

Entertainment, Club Meeting April 7 (See page 15)

In August 2016, the Barry Family (Mum, Dad and four children aged 7 to 11) flew to

France to spend the next two months cycling the Loire Valley along the Euro Velo 6,

across France to Switzerland. Little did they know that they would double their target

and would in fact finish 3000km away in Budapest, Hungary.

Coordinator Training Program for new and prospective Coordinators If you have been thinking about coordinating a walk or if you have already coordinated

several walks and would like some additional information, then read on.

The Club Walking Program is dependent on Coordinators to schedule and organise walks

for all members to enjoy. It is therefore important to keep growing our pool of coordinators

especially for those who like to walk at the weekend.

To help you make the step to coordinating a walk, the Club is conducting a training

session for members to identify the steps to prepare and plan a walk, what to do on the

walk, discuss some of the risks and to learn about the mentoring program to support you

during the first walks that you coordinate.

The training program will he held on:

Date: Sunday 28 May 2017

Venue: Tas. Bridge Association Club Rooms

Marine Esplanade, New Town Bay

Time: 9 am – 1 pm

To register for the training program please email your details to the Club Secretary Jane

Long at [email protected].

If you would like more information about the training please contact Rupert Manners on

6292 1310 or Philip Le Grove on 6224 4280.

your feedback is very important.

Some Walker Responsibilities Previews are not necessarily accurate; measurements are estimates, particularly

duration, pace and distance. Those who do not know the Trip Coordinator or are uncertain about any aspect of the walk should contact the coordinator before the day of the walk. Prospective Members and those bringing visitors must contact relevant Trip Coordinators

prior to each intended walk for a booking. Any participant under 18 should have a person responsible for them (guardian) for the trip. Before each trip, all intending participants must satisfy themselves that the walk is likely to be within their capability. Check the Preview. If you have any questions,

contact the Trip Coordinator before the day of the walk. You must notify them at the time of booking, at least the day before the walk, of any medical conditions (such as allergies or asthma) which may affect your walking ability. Leave details of the trip and a Search & Rescue contact (inside back page of the Circular) with a friend or relative. If the trip is overdue, they should first contact them, not the Police. If you see people who need help, offer assistance. Everyone should help to make the trip safer and more enjoyable for all.

HWC Facebook Group The Hobart Walking Club Facebook group is a closed group where only group members can see the posts. All members can see and add to/comment on the posts associated with the Club. Being part of the Club Facebook group is not exclusive to HWC members — anyone can join the HWC Facebook group.

Visitors A full Club Member may take one visitor on a Club trip with the prior agreement of the trip coordinator. A visitor may attend a maximum of three Club trips. Each visitor must sign the Visitor Waiver for each trip they attend.

Transport Private cars are pooled for trips unless otherwise stated. Cost is shared by car passengers, with a recommended maximum of 10c per passenger per km.

Toddlers Toddles All children must be under the care of their member guardian. All guardians/parents should sign the Club Waiver for minors for each trip. Children shall be kept under watch at all times during a Club trip.

Dog Walks All dog walks shall comply with the rules and regulations of government and local government authorities. Leave No Trace principles apply to official Club Dog Walks.

Cancelling a Trip When taking bookings always get contact details, including telephone numbers, of those interested. If you cancel or postpone, ensure you clearly tell all would-be participants ASAP. For email or telephone messages, ask for and ensure you get an acknowledgement. If not, telephone to restate cancellation. Failing contact, you, or a delegate, go to the appointed meeting place(s) to cancel a trip. For non-booking trips, you, or a delegate, go to the meeting place(s) to cancel a trip. Alternatively, have someone else conduct the trip, notify the Programmer and hand the forms to the new Trip Coordinator before the trip.

Rupert Manners 0417 921 310 [email protected] This is a second attempt, the weather being too ordinary on the first attempt. It requires some good weather as we will be camping at altitude in an exposed area. The first day we will head up Mt Picton and camp somewhere near Steanes Tarn, the second day we will do the traverse to Mt Chapman camping somewhere on the way. The third day we will go up Mt Chapman and Burgess Bluff and back to the cars. There is a rough track up Mt Picton and down from Burgess Bluff. The bit in between will be off track with a fair bit of scrub. Full wet weather gear required. Numbers limit. Book with the leader by 10th March. E-mail [email protected]. If the weather is poor, I will choose another

walk at lower altitude.

12 - 14 Apr EXT Cape Pillar MM

Carolynne Smith 0403914206 [email protected] Dates chosen to avoid the Easter crowds. A comfortable 2-night walk to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the cape. Base camp is about 4 - 5 hours from cars and so is not too far to carry our camping gear. Day return walk to the cape. All on good to very good tracks. There will be one or two short steep hills for us though. Numbers limited by tent sites. Please contact for details - email, text or phone and book by 2nd April. Return

driving distance 200km. 13 Apr Thu Mt Field East MM

10.4km 560m 5hrs Alan Wilson 0407 320 766 or 6244 4467 Mt Field NP [email protected] Meet at Fitzroy Gardens at 7:30am to arrange lifts or meet leader at Granton by 8:00am. We shall walk the circuit anti-clockwise having morning tea at Lake Nicholls and lunch on the summit. There are a few boulders to negotiate but nothing too difficult. 14 Apr Fri Arm End DWNQ

4-7km 1.5 - 2.5 hrs Robyn Everist 0413 383 207 http://www.ccc.tas.gov.au/page.aspx?u=1169 [email protected] Grab your poo bags and water bottle and come for a pleasant morning walk on Arm End with your hound for some delightful views of the Derwent. This reserve is managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service and is open to the public for recreational use. No vehicles are allowed. Access is through a boom gate at the end of Spitfarm Rd, so park there. We shall all walk through the boom gate and follow the track to the left, heading on to Mitchells Beach which is off lead. At the end of that beach we will go back on lead, rejoin the track along to Mary Ann Bay. Here will be the decision point – those with elderly or particularly slothful dogs (like mine) shall peel off to the right to head across the arm to Shelly Beach, where we can romp off lead in the water half way along – from Bangor Rd to Icehouse Bluff. We shall then turn around and head back to the vehicles via Shelly Beach. On the way back keep your eye out for the rough vehicle track on the left, about halfway along Shelley Beach. This track takes you back to the boom gate at the beginning of the walk. I expect this will be a 1.5 hour walk, approx. 4.5 km For those with spritely critters who just can’t get enough, at Mary Ann Bay you get to keep going! A deputy walk leader will need to volunteer to fearlessly lead those hearty souls around the longer route, which will be on-lead. This will take you past the Gellibrand Vault, the burial site of William Gellibrand who was the original grantee at South Arm. Then you will continue to Gellibrand Point and on past the spit on the eastern side of the point. Keep your dogs on lead and do not walk on the spit, as this is a sensitive bird breeding habitat. On Shelly Beach you can romp off lead in the water from half way along – from Bangor Rd to Icehouse Bluff, turn around and head back to the vehicles via Shelly Beach and the track. On the way back keep your eye out for the rough vehicle track on the left, about halfway along Shelley Beach. This track takes you back to the boom gate at the beginning of the walk. I expect this will be a 2.5 hour walk, approx. 7 km. Meet at the boom gate at the end of Sptifarm Road, Opossum Bay ready to move off at 9:30 am sharp. Bring lots of water and snacks to sustain both yourself & your dog. The dogless are also very welcome. Depart time 9:30 am.

14 - 17 Apr EXT Caveside Easter Camp SE

Tony & Linda Cook 6228 4986 [email protected] The serene farm based camp which is located under The Great Western Tiers, is best medicine in a bottle in my opinion. There are many fabulous walks to do, and the quiet country roads offer Champagne cycling conditions. Easter is a little later this year so please make sure you do have suitable clothes, and a pair of gum boots just in case of the odd shower, or long wet grass. The camp is down in dear old Joe's Parsons's paddock and fresh drinking water is available on tap. The toilets are located inside the Caveside Community Pool Complex, (adjacent to the paddock, and please bring your toilets rolls to avoid embarrassments)! There are no shower facilities, and I strongly recommend bringing your own portable BBQ etc. Eskies are recommended. Feel free to pursue your own agendas, or, just relax with a book. The Cook's Traditional Happy Hour is very popular, so bring your treats etc to share and enjoy the company of friends around the campfire at night. Bookings are required and Prospectives are welcome. Emails

are preferred, or phone in the evenings. 14 - 17 Apr EXT West Coast peaks LR

Nick Hume 62255361 [email protected] Plan to do some classics such as Murchison and Jukes circuits on the Saturday and Sunday. There are many other possibilities for the other days. Rupert Manners 0417 921 310 or 6292 1310 [email protected] This is a base camp staying at a fisherman's shack in Miena. The peaks on the agenda are Jilletts Tier, Billop Bluff, Mt Patrick, Mt Penny West and Split Rock. There are also other peaks which could be explored if there is time and inclination. Some of the walks are quite short so we may do a couple to fill in the day. Most of these will be off track so expect some scrub and rock, hopefully not too much. The accommodation will cost around $35 per person per night, depending on final numbers. We will go out to the pub for one night. Suitable for fit prospectives. Full wet weather gear required. Numbers limit. Book with the coordinator by 4 May.

TRIP REPORTS

13 Jan Botanical Gardens Rinda Burgess

Rather inclement weather - wind and some showery moments - but 13 walkers enjoyed visiting the Gardens mid-summer, with some beautiful blooms and about a dozen cute little ducklings.

21 - 27 Jan The Spires Paul Geeves

This was an unsuccessful attempt to reach The Spires via the bombardier track from Butlers Gorge. As the track is now so overgrown in places and hard to find it took us two days to reach the old airstrip north of the Gell River. We turned back from the airstrip as our rate of progress was too slow to have any time in the Spires before we would have to turn back. We retraced our steps and climbed Mt Hothouse as a day trip on the way out. It was an enjoyable trip despite not getting to the Spires. We will try again next year via the Pleiades.

25 Jan Mt Bridges Helen Daly

Fifteen walkers enjoyed a great day at Mt Field National Park. Mt Bridges was summited

followed bah scrub bash to Lake Seal outlet creek. Unfortunately, this required wading as

recent rain had added to the flow! Enjoyable day had by all.

26 Jan Wentworth Park, Howrah to Tranmere Mary Foster

Because of gale force north west winds, 5 riders decided against riding to Tranmere,

instead chose the Rokeby circuit which was more sheltered. We followed the cycle track

through to Rokeby fire station, then a lovely 2 kms of free-wheeling down Tollard Drive,

eventually ending up in a small Rokeby park for morning tea. After riding out to Droughty

Point and back we eventually found the little sealed track through the bush which we had

been unable to find earlier. There we had lunch in the shade near 3 huge old mulberry

trees full of fruit, then continued on back to our cars via Pass Road, and cycle track. No-

one opted for a swim afterwards due to the rough conditions.

30 Jan Cape Deslacs Malcolm Barron

The party of 7 completed the 8.38 kilometre circuit in 3 hrs and 40 minutes, including

breaks. The wind was light to moderate with occasional drizzling rain. In spite of the

weather, all participants, including two prospective members, enjoyed the walk.

30 Jan Toddlers Toddle Helen Dalla-Fontana

We were to have walked along the beach and have a paddle but as weather was cool and

there was drizzle, we walked instead to the fort where the children explored and then

found a good sheltered spot near the beach for morning tea. The walk finished early as

the rain intensified.

31 Jan Mt Field Tarn Shelf Circuit Philip Le Grove

Fifteen walkers headed to Tarn Shelf in conditions best described as 4 seasons in 1!

Sunshine, showers, hail and wind. Group agreed to walk anticlockwise as nobody had

done it that way before. Good decision as the wind was on our backs walking along the

Shelf. Group included a Brisbane based member and 3 members who were on Tarn Shelf

for the 1st time. An enjoyable day was had by all. The new meeting place alongside the

New Town Rivulet at the Rowing Centre was deemed very central for all this who attended

with lots of parking available.

2 Feb The Needles and Growling Swallet Mary Jolly

The weather at The Needles carpark at 9am was foul and most of the overnight campers

decided to head for home. Two stalwarts and yours truly stayed and 2 more brave souls

arrived from town. Abandoning all thoughts of the mountain the 5 of us set off in pouring

rain to the start of the Growling Swallet walk. Rain stopped as we got out of the cars and

we enjoyed the beautiful forest walk and the Swallet where torrents of water were

plummeting into the cavernous rock opening. Intrigued by this phenomenon, we thought it

a good idea to check out the spot where the Junee River emerges from this massive karst

system at the Junee Cave. Two magical venues and coffee and cake at the Possum Shed.

2 Feb Risdon/Richmond/Old Beach crt. Helen Daly

The weather forecast was good so we set off over Grass Tree Hill only to encounter strong cross wind as we descended towards Richmond. The strong wind alternated between a cross wind and headwind make this long ride a challenge for the 'hardy'! We all made it but were tired at the end!

3 Feb Howrah Beach to Little Howrah Beach Isabel Thorp

Pleasant company and walk. Beach and cycle track in the course of which we crossed two water courses. Very nice day, wind came up a bit towards the end, not a great worry. The walkways, park areas and recreation areas are very good and appear well used, particularly by little ones learning to ride their bikes.

4 Feb Salters Point - Curio Bay Jim Baptist

A warm day and 7.5 hours start to finish walking for the enthusiastic group of 16. The track around is getting a bit overgrown in places and has probably not had much recent use. We did some minor retaping on the day.

4 - 5 Feb Pandani Shelf and Mount Anne via North East Ridge Paul Geeves

This was a through trip from Condominium Creek to Sandfly Creek. On the Saturday, we climbed up onto the Mount Anne Plateau and to the base of the peak and picked up the cairned route around to Pandani Shelf to camp. On the Sunday, we picked up the North East Ridge track and descended back to the plains to follow the old Bombardier Track to Sandfly Creek. Good weather and good company made for a great trip. (The King Billy Pine forest was magnificent – typist.)

4 - 7 Feb Lake Marion, Horizontal Hill, Olympus North Rupert Manners

Day 1 we camped at Lake Marion. The next day we headed up Horizontal Hill which proved to be a scrubby hill and took us longer than expected. However, we did make it back to Narcissus on the same day. We changed our plans and decided Mt Byron and the Cuvier Valley would be a better option. The weather was perfect and the views fantastic. We did have a bit of trouble following the Cuvier track and took an easier option of wading around Lake Petrarch to the glorious campsite. The next day we walked out on the Cuvier track which has a few rather boggy sections and is becoming rather overgrown. There were some recent tags which made it easier to follow. I now have a GPS route if anyone needs one.

5 Feb Wild Dog Tier Jocelyn Darby

Starting from Lake Augusta near the new Thousand Lakes Lodge, we set off over the flat Wild Dog Plains. With the summer weather the ground was dry make our progress easy, many wallabies were seen on the way. The ridge line was reached by following a long boulder field to an alpine moor which was traversed to the base Wild Dog Tier. The summit was reached after a short boulder climb. the views were extensive of Great Lake, Walls of Jerusalem, Bastion and Quamby Bluff.

6 Feb Single Hill Josephine Petrov

Six walkers walked from the Lauderdale Tavern along the Tangara Trail. Some street walking was followed by a walk along Roches Beach. Unfortunately, a cold wind was blowing so there were no takers for a swim. A pleasant walk on a fine day.

7 Feb Tatnells Hill / Clemes Peak Gill Mosmann

We started the walk from the Devils Kitchen with perfect weather all day. The sea was flat and calm and we saw a school of dolphins from Patersons Arch. We called into Shower Falls and had morning tea at Morleys Lookout (AKA Waterfall Bluff). 12 climbed to Clemes Peak and then met the remaining 7 on Tatnells Hill for lunch. After lunch, we made our way to the top of Tatnells Hill for spectacular views. Afternoon tea was at Bangor. Thanks to everyone for making it a great walk.

8 Feb Coningham Vicki Martin

A wonderful walk with great company on a windy day. Lunch in the she-oak bush as it was too windy on the beaches. Two decided to swim at the end of the walk. Thanks to everyone for a lovely day out.

8 Feb Ida Bay Railway/Southport Lagoon John Owen

An enjoyable trip on the Ida Bay Railway walking to Southport Bluff Beach and Southport Lagoon. Twelve members decided to return on the train and 5 hardy souls walked back along the rail track from Deep Hole to Lune River.

9 Feb Prosser Sugarloaf Dale Carney

Nine walkers set off in very humid conditions along a well-signed 4wd track. A short but steep and rough ascent at the end got us to the summit. The return journey was via the direct ridge line route. A good walk in a good location with good company.

11 Feb Cathedral - Montague - Wellington Falls Circuit Patricia Colles

12 walkers enjoyed this circuit walk although only two braved the extra trip up and down Mt Montague. The conditions were pleasant for a long day out on the mountain. The river was low so both crossings were easy and the walk was enjoyed by all.

13 Feb Hellfire Bluff from Wielangta Chris Rathbone

After cancellation of the Lake Oenone overnight walk this short notice day walk was offered and 7 members enjoyed a cold blustery day following a new route from the hills to the west. An 8 km drive along a bumpy narrow Forestry road then a 1 km downhill scrub bash brought us to the Cockle Bay Road and thence the usual approach. A faster less scrubby return route, now taped, allowed us to complete the walk in 6.5 hours. This walk was first described in a web blog at http://hikinginsetasmania.blogspot.com.au/2013/11/hellfire-bluff.html

14 Feb Mt Snowy Roger Hurd

With parking restrictions introduced at Summerleas Rd intersection, we managed to assemble 24 walkers at Kingston Sports Centre overflow carpark and leave close to time. Our walk started in low cloud and that continued until lunch above Emily Tarn. Quite quickly the cloud lifted and 9 of our members dashed for the summit. We all arrived safely back at the car park in lovely sunshine.

15 Feb Mt Misery Josephine Petrov

Thirteen walkers enjoyed a delightful day climbing to the top of Mt Misery (a few people had not been on the walk so they enjoyed the rain forest). It was cool in the forest and not unpleasant at the top.

16 Feb Wylds Craig Rupert Manners

This walk went to Lanes Peak and Mt Lord as access to Wylds Craig track is probably blocked with a bridge down. Lanes Peak and Mt Lord was a grand alternative, fantastic weather and views, very slow going as there is no track and lots of clambering over fallen trees and large boulders. 5.5 kms took us 7 hours. It was quite an adventure.

19 Feb Mt Nelson to Taroona Beach Vicki Martin

What a day of weather changes! Nine walkers enjoyed the walk from Signal Station down to Taroona Beach, got rained on for a while from the end of lunch time, and returned in warmth up the steep slope to the Signal Station for hot and cold drinks. The views were great due to the clearing of the skies after the rain. A good day out.

20 Feb Opossum Bay Circuit Rob Hill

For a change, the small select group walked the peninsula in a clockwise direction - the views if anything better. A distraction was the appearance of two late model 4 WD, complete with suited and power-dressed personnel. As expected they were surveying the area for the proposed golf course. After putting our needs as walkers to them, we proceeded on our way. Our wish that a bogged 4 WD would need our assistance was not forthcoming. Dodged a shower at lunch time!

21 Feb Perrins Ridge Kerry Scott

One of my favourite walks as it is a good workout and great views from the top (even though the tree growth is starting to block these out). All 15 of us started the walk from Tramway Hill Reserve in Tabors Road. After a stroll along Old Bernies Rd we then started the steep climb to the top. We had lunch on the other side of Perrins Ridge by the creek and then returned to the cars the same way. Finished off a great day at the Hairy Giraffe for a coffee. Thanks all for your participation and cooperation.

22 Feb Cape Queen Elizabeth Warwick Risby

Our group of 18 included a prospective member and we enjoyed one of the best shorts walks on offer. A lovely warm sunny day with the added low tide enabled us to walk around Mars Bluff and the 'cave' in both directions. A visit to the Cardboard Goblet with history details provided by Ken surprised those who had not been before. There was a refreshing breeze at the Cape for lunch before returning in time for 6 members to enjoy a swim in the surf. A pleasurable afternoon tea on the grass at Roberts Point with a filling of cakes before we returned on the Bowen Ferry.

23 Feb Adamsons Peak Carlin Dowling

Five walkers, including one prospective, had a great workout as we huffed and puffed up a very long hill and negotiated some muddy bog and light scrub to summit Adamsons Peak. Morning tea, with views to the east and north, was a welcome respite after the steady slog through the humid rainforest. We headed towards the summit which was flirtingly peaking through fast rolling cloud. Unfortunately, as we reached the summit the cloud enveloped us and none of the hoped for expansive views were visible. We decided that the cloud was unlikely to clear and descended to enjoy lunch with a view. After a short stop at the hut ruins (with the peak taunting us by shedding its cloudy veil), we slowly descended through the forest.

23 - 26 Feb Walls of Jerusalem Rupert Manners

The Walls is always popular so we made this into two trips. I led the A team and we went from Lake Ada to Lake Fanny and then into the Walls through Zion Gate. We climbed Mt Jerusalem and Solomons Throne and visited the Pool of Bethesda. A few of us searched and found the Temple Hut and climbed the Temple as well.We walked out over the Great Pine Tier. John Kerrison led the B team and they did a circle in the opposite way, going in via the Bernes Valley and lakes Silver, Solveig, Sally and Ball. Team B climbed the Temple and Mt Jerusalem and went out via Zions Gate and Lake Fanny. Weather was fantastic; it was a great trip.

25 Feb Mt Field East Patricia Colles

A beautiful clear, warm and windless day meant perfect conditions for this delightful walk through forest and on to the summit. The views were excellent especially those of Mt Anne. All walkers enjoyed both walk and coffee afterwards.

26 Feb Mt Field Tarn Shelf Circuit Pam Powell

We had the best day – sunny, not too hot, no rain, no wind – perfection.

27 Feb Tolmans Hill to Fern Tree Phil Whitham

A pleasant walk from Tolmans Hill to Fern Tree and return was enjoyed by 8 club members.

28 Feb Towards Blakes Opening Wyn Manners

This was an ideal walk for a hot day- walking beside the Huon river on a delightfully shaded track. Rupert's track clearing team finished the clearing to Blakes Opening 30 seconds before the peloton arrived.

28 Feb Clarence Foreshore Mark Nelson

Lovely sunny evening with a cooling breeze. Three dogs and 5 masters/mistresses had a pleasant walk around the headland including views of the Queen Mary II through the distant Tasman Bridge.

2 Mar Acton Park to Sorell John McDonald

Thirteen cyclists had a good ride with mostly only light winds, which was a pleasant change. Coffees and milkshakes at the new Driftwood Cafe in Lauderdale wrapped up the day.

8 Mar Nierinna Creek Track Warwick Risby

It was International Women's Day and not surprisingly, our group of 16 consisted of more women than men. They were therefore out in front, in the middle and trailing at the end of the group keeping good company with the caring gentlemen. At the start, we saw a Wedge-tailed Eagle in flight and some spotted a snake (March is mating season). During morning tea two beautiful horses put their heads over the fence and were fed grass. Lunch in a shady cool Glen before we retraced our tracks on this enjoyable sunny day to finish off with a slice of cake.

9 Mar Salmon Ponds to Glenora Margaret McDonald

Nine cyclists had a very sociable day. The ride itself was almost incidental as we enjoyed shopping for all sorts of goodies at the Bushy Park Community Hall, followed by lunch at a tranquil dam with its resident ducks, then picked enough blackberries to fill our lunch boxes and finally back to Salmon Ponds for after-ride drinks.

11 Mar Mays Beach David Young

A large number of people and dogs (thought by some to be a record number for a dog walk) enjoyed beautiful walking weather, and (in the dogs' case) a chance of a dip in the sea. The forecast rain didn't happen. A guaranteed view of a wedgetail eagle was promised at the start of the walk, the reference being to a sculpture of one in a garden adjoining the walk. The bonus was that everyone got to see a real wedgie catching the thermals not too far away, just as the walk ended. As the younger generation might say: awesome!

Club Objects The Club objects are to promote, encourage and organise walking and similar outdoor

activities; to promote interest in flora, fauna and natural scenery in Tasmania; to provide

training opportunities for members in navigation and bushcraft; provide a source of

information on bushwalking in Tasmania to members and; to promote goodwill and social

interaction amongst members.

Joining the Club Persons aged 16 years and over can apply for prospective membership. To become a full

member, three qualifying walks and an Essential Skills Day have to be completed within

12 months of joining. For further details, visit the Club website or contact the Membership

Officer, Geoff O’Hara (0467 739 913) or email [email protected].

Risk The Club is a group of people who enjoy bushwalks and similar activities, with trips

organised on a voluntary basis by and for Club members. Every trip coordinator is an

unpaid volunteer who organises the walk for fellow Club members. They are not paid

professionals with commensurate training and responsibility. Thus each trip member is

responsible for their own safety, suitability of equipment and personal skills. Members and

visitors take part in Club organised activities at their own risk. The Club does not offer

qualified first aid.

Club activities involve inherent risks and dangers. The published Walk Previews grade the

level of difficulty and distance, and may indicate some risks. However, unanticipated and

unavoidable hazards can occur which result in serious injury or property loss/damage. For

example, weather can be unpredictable and change quickly, tracks become treacherous

and accidents can happen.

Liability Members acknowledge and agree that in applying to become a member (of whatever

grade) or renewing that membership of the Club that the nature of the activities carried out

by the Club and by participating voluntarily, freely and at their own risk, are such that it

would be unreasonable for the Club or any of its members acting on its behalf to be in any

way responsible for any injury, or death, to members or to damage to their property and

members hereby, to the full extent permitted by law, waive all of their legal rights of action

against and fully release the Club for loss, damage or injury or death or loss or damage to

property howsoever arising out of or in relation to member’s participation in the activities

conducted by the Club including without limitation, liability for any negligent or tortuous Act

or omission or breach of statutory duty on the part of the Club, its office bearers or agents.

Insurance and Legal Matters The Club insurance covers public liability, excluding member-to-member events, during

Club activities. Members' vehicles are not covered. For further information write to the

Secretary on constitutional or legal matters and the Treasurer on insurance matters.
