HIV Origin
7th Grade
• Many researchers believe that HIV developed in Africa, where certain chimpanzees carry the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV).
• Researchers think that HIV evolved from SIV and that transmission of the virus from chimpanzee to human occurred when chimpanzees were hunted for food.

Teens and HIV
• Teens are one of the fastest-growing groups to become infected with HIV.
• Over 10,000 teens have been diagnosed with HIV in the United States. More than 4,000 of these have developed AIDS.
• HIV is rising in teens because many teens do not take the risks of HIV and AIDS seriously, and engage in high-risk behaviors.
• Any exchange of blood whether from a transfusion, needles or sex puts you at risk from contracting the HIV virus
