Island nation meant people had to turn to
the sea for food.
Mountainous terrain meant little land for
farming
The use of retaining walls…
…and terraced fields…
…helped the Japanese to grow rice on the sides of mountains.
Harvest Time
It would be hard to farm and fish during the winter
months however…
The Japanese learned to pack the fish in rice to preserve it through the winter months.
(write this down)
The rice would ferment while packed around the
fish. (write this down)
