HINDUSTAN TIMES, CHANDIGARH THURSDAY, APRIL 04, 2019 hindustan times region 07 HT Correspondent n [email protected] NEW DELHI : A day after a Twitter spat with her party colleague Saurabh Bharadwaj, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Chandni Chowk Alka Lamba on Wednesday asked her constituents at a public meet- ing whether “they wanted her to quit the party or continue her fight”. Lamba, however, did not elaborate on what she meant by continuing her fight. “My own party tells me that I am soft on the Congress… On one hand, they want to ally with them (Congress) to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On the other, they have been attacking the Con- gress… But they should keep in mind that if they ally with the Congress after so much criticism, the BJP will target them for the doublespeak,” Lamba told a public gathering near Jama Masjid. Lamba claimed that she had been asked to resign from the party for the fourth time. “…The last time, when I had sent my res- ignation to Arvind Kejriwal’s office, deputy chief minister Man- ish Sisodia had come forward and I was coaxed into taking my resig- nation back… But why am I being attacked by my own party again?” said Lamba. She said, “So, I ask you, do you want me to quit or continue my fight?” Responding to Lamba’s com- ments, Bharadwaj said, “The question that Lamba ji should have asked people is that whether she should stay with the AAP or join the Congress. Her question has confused the people.” AAP’s Delhi unit convener Gopal Rai said the matter is between the two leaders. When asked if the party would take action against Lamba for talking openly about joining Congress, he said, “The party is keeping an eye on all developments. What- ever is decided will be conveyed at the appropriate time.” LAMBA ASKS VOTERS IF SHE SHOULD QUIT AAP OR CONTINUE n AAP’s Alka Lamba. HT ARCHIVE HT Correspondent n [email protected] NEWDELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Wednesday said it will dis- cuss any possibility of an alli- ance with the Congress only after the Congress clarifies its stand on full statehood for Delhi. AAP Delhi convener Gopal Rai Tuesday wrote to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, urging his party to support full state- hood for Delhi instead of propos- ing amendments to the Govern- ment of National Capital Terri- tory of Delhi (GNCTD) Act, 1991. Delhi goes to polls on May 12 and, so far, only the AAP has declared its candidates in all seven parliamentary constitu- encies. When asked if AAP has dis- cussed the issue of an alliance after Gandhi, on Tuesday, said the Congress is “open and flexible” to a tie-up, Rai main- tained that no communication had come from the Congress so far. “Gandhi’s comment were pos- itive towards an alliance. But, the Congress through its mani- festo did not depict the same pas- sion for full statehood, which is AAP’s key poll agenda this Lok Sabha elections. So, AAP will discuss about an alliance only after the Congress agrees that full statehood is its top priority, too,” the AAP convener said. In its manifesto released on Tuesday, the Congress said it “promises to amend the GNCTD Act, 1991, to make it clear that the lieutenant-governor shall act on the aid and advice of the council of ministers, except in matters concerning the three reserved subjects.” Rai countered this by sending a letter to Gandhi on Wednesday. “This is factually incorrect and these four lines do not convey anything. Firstly, aid and advice has nothing to do with the GNCTD Act, and it is extremely disappointing that after having promised statehood for Delhi for decades, your party has now gone back on its promise,” he said in the letter. The AAP leader further said it appears that this issue has been hurriedly incorporated in the Congress manifesto “without any homework or research”. “For undoing the injustice to Delhi, it is time for a fresh consti- tutional amendment to provide it with full statehood. Merely changing the GNCTD Act will change nothing. The Congress has promised full statehood to Puducherry, but it has given a stepmotherly treatment to Delhi,” Rai alleged. He requested Gandhi to recon- sider the stand taken by the Con- gress regarding Delhi and sup- port the demand for full state- hood. Tie-up only if Cong for statehood: AAP HT Correspondent n [email protected] NEW DELHI: This April Fool’s Day, a team of Delhi Police from Dwarka made a fool of a Mewati ATM thief wanted in a series of cases in Uttar Pradesh, Karna- taka and Delhi. On Monday, the police team members dressed up as villag- ers — some in lungi-kurta and a few in loose pyjamas — to appear as members of another Mewati gang. When the suspect arrived to steal cash from an ATM in Uttam Nagar, on the pretext of sharing the booty, the police team locked him in the ATM kiosk and later arrested him. The police have identified the man as 45-year-old Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Ram Park in Loni, Ghaziabad. Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said his team received informa- tion that Aslam, who is wanted in a series of ATM thefts, will reach Uttam Nagar area to recee an ATM kiosk. “We knew that Aslam is a Mewati criminal. In order to trap him, our men got dressed up in lungi-kurta. They also donned a bandana like Mewatis usually do. Around 9pm, the police team spotted Aslam at the ATM. When Aslam saw the dis- guised policemen, he believed them to be Mewati criminals and agreed to share the cash sto- len from the ATM,” Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said. Police said all of them headed to the ATM, and the policemen tricked him and locked him inside the ATM kiosk. He was then overpowered and arrested. DCP Alphonse said, “Moham- mad Aslam admitted that he hails from village Karanda in Mewat. He said he was involved in multiple cases of ATM thefts in Kanpur, UP and also in Kar- nataka. He said he used differ- ent names every time the police caught him to hide his criminal past.” Police said, in 2012, Aslam along with his associates tried to steal cash from an ATM in Maurya Enclave but the secu- rity guard opened fired at them in which one of his associates was killed. Later, Aslam was also arrested but he absconded from police custody during trial. The court had declared him a proclaimed offender, police said. The victim was identified as Madhu Ram, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pra- desh. The factory he was work- ing in processed plastic waste. The factory owner was later arrested. Police said that they received a distress call at the Maidan Garhi police station at around 1.15 am. Deputy commissioner of police (South) Vijay Kumar said when police reached the spot, a 19-year-old labourer Himanshu Prasad, who was working with Ram at the machine, told them what had happened. “He said that as Ram leaned into the machine to settle the crushed bottles, the shaft of the machine came down and crushed him from shoulder to the chest. He died on the spot. His body was taken to Safdarjung hospital where an autopsy was conducted and his family was informed,” the DCP said. Kumar said, initial probe revealed that the property, which is at Banshee Road in Asola, was rented out to a man named Manish Kumar Gupta. “Gupta had set up the crushing machine to crush plastic bottles and had employed some labou- rers to run the factory. Labou- rers told police that the machine also required to be handled man- ually. A case of causing death due to negligence has been regis- tered and Gupta was arrested,” the DCP said. Police said Ram lived in Delhi with his brother who also works at a factory nearby. Ram is unmarried and his parents live at their native village in UP. Dhruv Kumar, who works as an electrician near the factory, and witnessed the accident, said that the machine has three doors. “The person who is operating the machine has to close these doors to start the machine. Ram had closed two doors but some- thing stuck the third door. As Ram climbed up to check, the shaft collapsed,” Kumar said. DCP Kumar said police are also probing if there is any foul play.
