“ Recreation is a powerful tool—a gift, really—that brings opportunities for fun, laughter and a renewed sense of self-worth. I learn so much from our youth about resiliency, moving on, and always trying to make sense of who they are. I’m grateful every day to be able to work with these amazing kids.”
As a Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator at Hillside’s Monroe Campus, Claudia has a ball with youth—literally. Through activities that are individualized based on specific developmental or behavioral needs, she and her colleagues bring smiles to these young people’s faces and a sense of normalcy to their lives.
CLAUDIA HERMANHILLSIDE VO I C E S
The roots of family run deep at Hillside Family of Agencies. Our mission is grounded in a commitment to strengthening families and communities. And Hillside is a family unto itself—dedicated and caring employees partnered with youth and families, in collaboration with communities and supported by the invaluable generosity of our donors.
Each of these varied family members brings an important perspective to our work, and you’ll hear some of those perspectives in the pages of this year’s Hillside Family of Agencies Annual Report. Together, their voices inform and guide our efforts. They ensure that our services achieve their goals, and that the youth, adults and families who depend on Hillside find their pathways to healthier, happier lives.
You are an important part of our family as well, and your viewpoint has great value. We hope you will join the ongoing conversation on Hillside’s social media pages, share your thoughts about our work at an upcoming event, or contact us directly at [email protected]. To best fulfill our commitment to youth and families, we know that every voice matters.
Sincerely,
Maria Cristalli Edward WhitePresident & Chief Executive Officer Chair, Board of Governors

OUR NEW PRESIDENT & CEOIn 2018, Hillside said farewell to longtime President & CEO Dennis M. Richardson, who retired June 30 after 24 years of service. In December, the HFA Board of Governors announced that his successor would be Maria Cristalli, whose 27-year tenure at Hillside includes both operational and administrative leadership experience. Welcome, Maria!

In-Home and Community Support From home-based support to juvenile-justice diversion programs, an array of services channel research-informed practices into the lives of the youth and families with whom we partner.

Services
“ It started with two beautiful boys and, two years later, their sister. We were overjoyed to bring them all home, and from day one, Hillside was our #1 support on the long road to adoption. After years of hard work, we were elated! Thank you to all who made that day possible, and every day since then.”
Kelly and Joe closed 2018 by opening their hearts, their home and their name to Jon, Michael and Shianne, biological siblings whom the Carlsons first met three years earlier through Hillside’s Therapeutic Foster Care program. Now they all have another year-end holiday to observe: For the Carlson family, December 17 will always be Adoption Day. (Pictured with Hon. “ I’ve met many kids in the Work-Scholarship program, and they’re so impressive. It’s wonderful to be able to help them stay in school and be successful. People should understand that this program helps more than just the students who participate. We all benefit from higher graduation rates—it changes the lives of the kids, and helps the whole community.”
For most of his life, Sherwood Deutsch has known of Hillside’s impact; as a teen, the future entrepreneur attended school with youth served by Hillside programs. For over a decade, Deutsch has been a major supporter of Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection—helping at-risk youth as they pursue their goals of graduation, college and career.

" Sometimes in ninth grade it’s hard to see a future for yourself. That makes the communication between Elijah, his mom and me so important. It helps him see that we’re on the same page—we know he’s capable of so much, and we all want the best for him." -Saudia
The core of Elijah’s participation in Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection is his ongoing partnership with Saudia, his HW-SC Youth Advocate. The two meet nearly every day to discuss Elijah’s studies and progress, his challenges and successes. His mom, Timica, calls HW-SC and its role in Elijah’s life “a blessing—I’m thankful that my son is a part of this program.”
“ I didn’t care much about my grades, but Ms. Brown helped me see that better grades will help me get into a good college, so I started paying attention more and trying harder. Now, with help from Ms. Brown and my mom, I feel like I can succeed at anything I put my mind to.” -Elijah

“ When I first started meeting with Stephanie, my Parent Educator, I didn’t know what to expect—but I knew Hillside, and I trusted them to help me with my son De’mario. He’s doing great in school now, but I still get so much out of my meetings with Stephanie. She’s a big help in a lot of ways. I’m really grateful for this program, and for Hillside.”
The Parents as Advocates program of Hillside’s Family Resource Centers supports moms and dads as their kids transition into school-age years. Through monthly visits with a Parent Educator, participants learn to build strong school and teacher relationships and create a foundation for their child’s success. Yomarie and her son experienced those benefits, and more.YOMARIE & DE'MARIOHILLSIDE

Pinnacle SocietyA LASTING LEGACYThe Pinnacle Society recognizes individuals who have made provisions in their wills or estate plans, or have otherwise made a planned gift, for Hillside Family of Agencies or an HFA affiliate. We thank these individuals for their foresight, and the impact they will have on youth and families for generations to come.
Planned gifts can help alleviate estate tax burdens on heirs while helping ensure a legacy of support in perpetuity. Once realized, these gifts will allow Hillside to respond to evolving needs by investing in new programs, technologies, research and innovations.
If you have made similar provisions or plans for Hillside and are not mentioned in this listing, please contact Christie Raymo at [email protected] or (585) 256-7513. We would love to recognize your commitment and formally thank you as a member of the Pinnacle Society.

“ I know first-hand how HW-SC opens doors for young people. My sons’ Youth Advocates became like a part of our family—along with their teachers and other partners, we all worked as a team to provide the wraparound supports that helped them achieve their academic goals. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join Hillside and keep this program strong for more families.”
Karinda joined Hillside in 2018 to lead Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection operations in the Central Region, where the program serves Syracuse, Rome, Binghamton and Union-Endicott students. But her Work-Scholarship experience dates back much further: her sons, Armondo and Quintin, were HW-SC students before graduating and heading off to college.
