Dear HAMS families,
The final month of school has arrived! It is hard to believe
how quickly this year has passed. April was another busy and great
month here at Hillsborough Academy of Math and Science. A
special thank you to our PTSO for putting on another amazing Silent
Auction event. It was a huge success and a fun night for everyone
who attended. Thank you to everyone who helped and stopped by
for this well planned evening and bid in the silent auction.
The state testing season is winding down, but will continue
into May with Math and Civics End of Course Exams. We appreciate
your patience in helping us maintain a closed campus for all of our
students testing security.
We are looking forward to finishing out this school year on a
positive note.
The Admin Team
Kindergarten
Kindergarten is almost over! We have come so far this school year and we are so proud of ourselves! Kindergarten will wrap up our reading and language arts curriculum by practicing what we know, learning a few new words, and writing about animals. We will review addition and subtraction and do our best to master these math facts for first grade. We will keep busy in Science and Social Studies as we work on a very large animal presentation! Students will be transformed into an animal of their choice. We will learn many details about our animals, write a report, and present what we learn to the whole school! Kindergarten classes will also celebrate successes with a field trip to Dinosaur World and a Sing-A-Long Graduation Ceremony! First grade here we come!
First Grade
First graders will be going to their final field trip to the Florida Aquarium, where they will learn about a variety of sea life animals and plants. First graders are also preparing for second grade as they learn more math, engineer more, do author studies and study people in history.
Second Grade
In May we are wrapping up our year of science with habitat projects. Students will be writing research papers on a chosen habitat. In reading we will be finishing with a book study on Charlotte’s Web. We will review all reading strategies within the text.
Third Grade
This month our Third Graders will be preparing for Fourth Grade. We will be doing this by showing off our best writing skills and working on using our best spelling and conventions to make a paragraph truly shine! We will also be diving deeper into math concepts and combining different concepts for problem solving projects.
Fourth Grade
It’s hard to believe that we are in the last month of school. In 4th grade we will continue mastering math skills through a variety of projects. In science, students will enjoy a health unit as we finish the year. And finally, in language arts, we will finish reading Kingdom Keepers as we prepare for our end of the year trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Fifth Grade
For the month of May our 5th grade scholars will be studying a historical person and then creating a project about them for our 5th grade Wax Museum. In reading and language arts we are doing a project about food and continuing to work on our reading and writing skills. In math and science, students will be preparing for 6th grade by learning about negative numbers and biology.
Elementary Updates
Middle School Updates 6th grade students went on a 3 day field trip to
Nature’s Classroom on the Hillsborough River.
Activities included survival training; a hike
through, and information about, the 4
ecosystems that are present there;
orienteering with a compass and paces; hands-
on learning with snakes, baby alligators,
turtles, rabbits, and guinea pigs; using a dip net
and buckets for shoreline sampling and
collection and identification of species from
the Hillsborough River; and a walk through the
animal enclosure with rescue animals including
a bald eagle, owls, hawks, bears, a Florida
panther, and of course, a BOBCAT!
