Let me introduce you to the Higher Education prospectus for Wakefield College. We have almost 40 university level courses, across a range of subjects, which are accredited in conjunction with Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Huddersfield. We are currently excited to be developing a new relationship with Teesside University and we have a long history of working with Pearson Edexcel.

Here at College we think of ourselves as an alternative Higher Education provider; one that puts you, the learner, at the heart of everything we do. This prospectus gives you all the information you need in order to make one of the most significant decisions of your life.

Embarking on undergraduate study locally, instead of travelling further afield, is a choice which an increasing number of students are recognising as both attractive and practical.

Guide to QualificationsThis is our complete Jargon Buster!

Access courses One year pre-degree course designed to help adults who have been out of education for some time re-engage with learning and progress onto higher level pathways.

APL Accreditation of Prior Learning. Skills and competencies gained in the workplace can be accredited as an alternative to formal qualifications. Generally for mature students who wish to enter Higher Education, but lack the formal entry qualifications.

BA, BAEd, BEng, BSc Refer to Bachelor degrees in various areas: Bachelor of Arts (BA); Bachelor of Education (BAEd); Bachelor of Engineering (BEng); and Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Conditional Offer An offer made by the College Admissions team which is dependent on a certain target being reached.

Entry Requirements The results, evidence or level of performance necessary to gain a place on a given course.

Foundation Degree Higher Education qualifications that combine academic study with work-based learning and are designed to equip you for a particular area of work. Usually studied full-time over two years, although part-time foundation degrees do exist. Can lead to an honours degree with a further year’s study.

Higher National Diploma (HND) Vocationally orientated, usually full-time and studied over two years. Can lead to progression to the second (or sometimes third) year of an honours degree.

Higher National Certificate (HNC) Usually studied part-time over two years. Progression is to the second year of an honours degree or top-up to an HND.

Professional, Vocational and Technical Qualifications (AAT, City & Guilds, ILM, CIM etc.) usually studied part-time, alongside work and designed for a specific field of work; often by professional bodies. Undertaken to assist in professional development, they can lead on to further study.

Top-Up Degree Available to those who have successfully completed an HND or Foundation Degree and wish to ‘top up’ to a full honours degree. Can be studied either part or full-time.

Tuition Fees The amount to be paid each year in order to study your chosen course. Fees vary depending on choice of institution. There are a number of ways in which you can fund your Higher Education study, depending on your personal circumstances. See Money Matters on pages 014-017.

There are many leisure opportunities to enjoy, from leading museums and galleries such as the internationally-acclaimed Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the world-class Hepworth Gallery, to water sports at Pugneys and even skiing and snowboarding at the Xscape complex. If you are a fan of the great outdoors, you could explore the manor houses, country parks and castles, or venture out on the many cycle paths and bridleways that traverse the District and surrounding areas.

Wakefield’s nightlife has a reputation for live entertainment, from theatre to unique musical events, but whilst the city itself is alive until the early hours with pubs, clubs and bars, there are also numerous country pubs and restaurants which offer quieter evenings out.

Shopping opportunities abound in Wakefield, from designer bargains at Junction 32, to The Ridings and new Trinity Walk development in the city centre, which offer high-street stores and independent retailers.

Showcasing our local culinary legacy, annual festivals celebrate the dishes created by rhubarb and liquorice; two flavours that are synonymous with the city. If eating out is your thing, you can choose from a wide variety of menus and prices at eateries across the District, including Wakefield College’s own award-winning Gaskell’s training restaurant.

The District is famous for its sporting traditions and offers opportunities to witness the rivalry between the local rugby league teams or sample water sports, golf, racing, athletics, fishing, and football.

The City – a changing landscape

Things are changing here in Wakefield, with a host of modern developments adding to the already rich and diverse heritage to be found across the District. A colourful history has shaped the ‘Merrie City’, which offers a combination of heritage, countryside, entertainment, culture, shopping and sport.

Money Matters The facts

Funding overviewA degree is great for your job prospects and also increases your earning potential. So, going to university or studying in higher education is an investment in your future from which you will reap the rewards throughout your lifetime.

But the student finance system can be complex. At Wakefield College we will help you understand the facts before you invest in your future.

We believe that pricing people out of Higher Education would devalue our institution and prohibit a number of people from continuing their education. This is why Affordability is one of our three core values.

From September 2012, the UK Government changed the way Higher Education in England is funded. This means that public sector universities and colleges can charge new full-time students up to £9,000 per year in tuition fees.

We have set our fees at the lowest level we are able to charge whilst still being able to offer our high quality provision. We are competitively priced in comparison to our local university counterparts, which will ensure that Wakefield College students will have significantly less to pay back once they are in work and earning.

A number of grants, loans and bursaries are available, depending upon your mode of study and personal circumstances. An overview of student finance follows, but more information is available through our website: www.wakefield.ac.uk/he

Full-time fundingThere are two main costs new full-time students need to consider: tuition fees and living costs.

If you are studying on your first Higher Education course, you can get a Government loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. These tuition fee loans will cover your course costs and are paid by the Government direct to the institution that you attend.

This is no ordinary loan – it’s not like repaying your credit card or bank loans. Here’s what you need to know*

• You don’t have to pay back your tuition fee loan and your living cost loan until you are earning over £21,000 a year.

• You repay your loans at a rate of 9% of your income over £21,000. So if your salary is £25,000 a year, you pay 9% of £4,000, which is £6.92 a week.

• If your job pays below £21,000, or if you stop working completely, you stop repaying your loan until you are working again and earning over £21,000.

• Your monthly repayments will be deducted from your wage in a similar way to tax and National Insurance.

• If it is not repaid within 30 years it is written off.

You can also receive assistance with your living expenses. There are Maintenance Loans available and, depending on your household income, you could qualify for a non-repayable Maintenance Grant.

Extra financial help may be available if you have a disability or children or adults who are dependants.

Part-time fundingNew part-time students can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £6,750 depending upon the proportion of a full-time course studied. To qualify you must be studying for your first Higher Education qualification and complete a minimum of 25% (and maximum of 75%) of the equivalent full-time course workload per year.

The repayment structure is different to that of full-time students:

• You will start making repayments in the April four years after the start of your course, or the April after you leave the course, whichever comes first.

• No repayments will have to be made until you are earning over £21,000.

• Your monthly repayments will be deducted from your wage in a similar way to tax and National Insurance.

Existing part-time students with a household income under £28,066 who have previously received the fee and course grants will continue to receive a fee grant and course grant instead of a tuition fee loan.

Unfortunately, new part-time students cannot get a grant for their living costs.

Extra financial help will be available to disabled students studying on a part-time basis through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).

Money Matters Other types of funding

Financial Support for courses that do not qualify for support from Student Finance EnglandIf you are aged 19-23 at 31/08/2014 please contact Financial Support as you may be able to apply for help towards your tuition fees through the College’s remission policy.

If you are aged 24+ as at 31/08/2014 you may be able to apply for the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan for your tuition fees.

Access to Learning Fund (ALF)Students in financial hardship who need extra help to stay in Higher Education, could get help from the Access to Learning Fund.

The amount you can get is decided by the Student Finance Team at the College. Most awards are grants that don’t have to be paid back, although some are loans that do have to be paid back. Money can be paid in a lump sum or in instalments.

Money from the Access to Learning Fund won’t usually be counted as income when working out your entitlement to benefits or tax credits, unless it’s for day-to-day living costs.

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)This is a non-means-tested and non-repayable funding source which is intended to help meet the extra costs incurred as a direct result of a disability, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty whilst undertaking Higher Education study.

Care LeaversYoung people up to the age of 25 who have been in Local Authority care are entitled to additional support in the form of a bursary and additional funds from their Local Authority.

Other Financial Assistance■ Childcare Grant: to help parents in Higher Education.

■ Parents’ Learning Allowance.

■ Adult Dependants’ Grant: help if there is an adult who depends on you financially.

■ Child Tax Credits and Financial Support for students on benefits: part-time students and certain groups of full-time students are sometimes eligible.

Remember, you can only begin making a claim for financial support for your studies once you have made your application through UCAS.

Apply as soon as possible so that you know what you are entitled to, well ahead of starting your course.

As a student entering Higher Education, you may be eligible for a National Scholarship award. The National Scholarship Programme is an initiative aimed at low-income students and funded jointly by the Government and by universities and colleges. To be considered for a scholarship your residual household income must be below £25,000; although not all those with incomes below this level will receive a National Scholarship award. For more information about eligibility for the National Scholarship Programme and other institutional support that might be available to you, please visit our website at: www.wakefield.ac.uk/HigherEducation/fees-and-finance/national-scholarship-programme.asp which also explains how you may apply and how you would then be assessed for a scholarship.

Eligibility CriteriaTo be considered for the NSP scholarship you must:

• be a Home (England) or EU student

• have a household income of less than £25,000 and be in receipt of the full Student Finance Maintenance Grant

• have received and accepted an offer of a place on a Higher Education course at Wakefield College, as your first choice (not an insurance choice). This must be your first HE course and not a top-up degree qualification.

Please be aware that the Government has awarded the College a limited number of scholarships as part of the National Scholarship Programme, so meeting the eligibility criteria and applying does not guarantee the award of a scholarship. Wakefield College will also set additional criteria to make sure the scholarship funding reaches those who need it the most.

Graduation Ceremonyat Wakefield College

Each year we mark the achievements of our Higher Education students at our Graduation Ceremony, which gives graduates the opportunity to celebrate their well-deserved success in the company of their families, tutors and fellow students.

Now one of the highlights of the College calendar, the Graduation Ceremony is a formal event, held in full academic dress.

Wakefield Cathedral provides a prestigious venue for the ceremony. Headed by the Mayor and Mayoress of the Wakefield Metropolitan District, College staff, governors, guests and graduands process from the City Campus and are seated in the Cathedral’s beautifully restored nave where the guest speaker presents all graduands with a certificate.

Wakefield College’s degrees are validated by Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Huddersfield, and we are currently in the process of developing a new relationship with Teesside University. Our students are also able to attend the awarding university’s graduation ceremony, if they wish.

“ I was blown away by the graduation ceremony and how professional and nice it was. It made me feel proud and my parents were incredibly proud too. They didn’t fully understand all the hard work I’d put in over the two years of the course until that final day. It was about everything we’d done over the two years, so it was a brilliant way to finish and show everyone that we were qualified to build websites. It was brilliant!”

As from September 2013, Performing Arts will move to its new home in the heart of Wakefield’s Civic Quarter. The building on Wood Street, which was the City Museum from 1955 to 2012, now houses professional standard dance and drama studios, classrooms and a superb new professional theatre. Thanks to a £1m refurbishment which has breathed new life into this grand old building, students will now benefit from industry-standard facilities in a city centre location.

What you will studyYou will study compulsory and optional units from one of the four Access pathways:

What you will studyRecognised as a major qualification for technician level accounting staff, this qualification is accredited within the regulatory credit framework and is a suite of competence based qualifications at Levels 2, 3 and 4 in the qualifications framework (QCF).

At Level 4 you will study financial statements, budgeting, financial performance, internal control and accounting systems, and two units from credit management and control, personal tax, business tax, external auditing.

All units are based around the work of the working accountant and include an understanding of book-keeping and the ability to prepare financial statements to publication level, tax returns to conform to HMRC requirements and various internal management reports.

What you will studyEnabling you to build on your managerial and care competencies, or gain recognition for existing skills, the Diploma allows you to follow one of six pathways, depending upon your background within Health and Social Care. These include Children and Young People’s Residential Management, Children and Young People’s Management, Children and Young People’s Advanced Practice, Adults’ Residential Management, Adults’ Management, and Adults’ Advanced Practice.

Core units of study are shared by all pathways:

How you will learn and be assessedThe award is based on work-based performance. Your assessor will work with you to plan and assess your practical skills in the workplace. The bulk of your learning will therefore be in the workplace, but training and support will be provided at College to ensure that you are meeting the required standard.

You will be assessed through observation in the workplace and the production of an evidence portfolio.

What next?You are likely to be an assistant or deputy manager involved in running a facility providing services for vulnerable children, adults or both. The Diploma could take your career in a new direction within adult or children’s care services. It will confirm that you have the necessary competence to run a care centre or nursing home, and is also relevant to a wide range of other health and social care settings.

What you will studyCombining theoretical study with transferable skills, this course is particularly relevant for those wishing to progress from a Certificate in Education to an undergraduate degree in order to enhance their career in education and training and related fields.

Broadening knowledge of theoretical and policy issues, you will study core modules in: Personal and Professional Reflection and Development; Research and Academic Writing; Current Issues in Post-14 Education; Designing and Delivering Training; and Empirical and Reflective Study Projects.

You will also be able to choose from optional modules in Improving Teaching and Learning, Technology, Curriculum Development, Mentoring and Coaching, People and Teams or Inclusive Learning and Skills for Life.

How you will learn and be assessedThe course is delivered using a blended learning approach which has six different elements: an induction day school in Year 1; three day schools in each year; online learning and networking; online and paper based assessment; a teaching and learning festival in each year and online and face-to-face support at the centre you have chosen to study with.

The induction day school, day schools and teaching and learning festivals will be held on Saturdays and are to be based at Northern College, Barnsley. Face-to-face support for each module will be given at Wakefield College.

What you will studyThe Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Lifelong Learning) are professional qualifications surrounding teaching in further education colleges, adult education, Higher Education, and a wide range of other training and educational settings outside the schools sector.

Graduates normally work towards a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Those with other appropriate qualifications may work towards a Certificate in Education (Cert.Ed).

Both qualifications are structured around four 30 credit modules (two in each year) based on different aspects of teachers’ work such as designing learning materials, assessing students, and evaluating learning and teaching.

How you will learn and be assessedPractical aspects of the course will assist you in gaining experience that will develop your competencies in the planning of teaching and learning. You will undertake project and academic work, including studying critical reviews, quality assurance and professional issues in formal lectures, tutorials and group work.

You will be assessed through assignments and by providing evidence of achievement. Observations of your teaching (four per year) will be conducted by tutors and mentors.

What next?It is a Government requirement that all those working in the Further Education sector should hold a teaching qualification. The growth of the lifelong learning sector should enhance your career opportunities.

Additional SupportAbout 600 students each year benefit from the support of the Additional Support Team. We have a Co-ordinator and a Study Coach who understand the needs of students with medical conditions, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autistic spectrum disorders, mental health conditions, ADHD, mobility difficulties, visual impairment, learning difficulties or who are deaf or hard of hearing or have English as a second language.

HE students with disabilities will need to apply for DSA. This is a non-means tested grant. We can support you with the DSA application process if you are unsure what it involves. Your DSA funds the support you receive from us during the time you are at College. We can work with you to plan the extra help you need and advise your tutors how to make adjustments for you.

Support can be in and/or out of class – we aim to help you be as independent as possible, but we want you to be supported properly so that you succeed at College. It may be that assistive technology is all you require or you may need a support worker helping you in class as well as during breaks. If you need any extra help in exams, like extra time or a reader or scribe, it’s important that you tell your tutor in good time so they can apply for access arrangements for you.

We strongly urge you to disclose any disability or additional support need so we can make any reasonable adjustments necessary. We have a Single Equality Scheme, which outlines the access and support we are able to offer students.

LibraryPlusEach of our main Campuses has a well-equipped Library, providing books, journals, multi-media IT facilities and access to the internet. Students can access specialist electronic resources subscribed to by the College both on and off site. These resources range from online journals and newspapers to streamed video and e-books. Students can use our computers, which can be booked up to a week in advance, to produce their assignments. Experienced staff are always on hand to assist.

Restaurant ServicesAt each of our main Campuses, a restaurant service offers a good selection of hot and cold meals, sandwiches and refreshments.

Safeguarding ChildrenOur Policy for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults ensures that everyone attending activities in the College does so in a safe and secure environment. It sets out the steps we take to protect vulnerable adults and young people and the procedures we would use to deal with any issues. Wakefield City CampusOur City Campus has been transformed in recent years by a major refurbishment, and is now equipped with all the facilities and resources you will need to support and enhance your learning.

City Campus is the home to Sixth Form at Wakefield College and Student Services. The Campus boasts a three-storey LibraryPlus facility, a triple award winning training restaurant (Gaskell’s), a spacious social lounge, a Starbucks coffee bar and a food court.

Located only five minutes from both the City centre and Wakefield Westgate railway station, the recent renovation has developed a campus with a series of student social spaces which are furnished with a variety of seating and learning areas ensuring a safe, secure and enjoyable environment for students.

Thornes Park CampusCombining a beautiful parkland setting with a range of facilities which complement your studies, our Thornes Park Campus is a unique environment in which to learn.

Boasting state-of-the-art recording studio facilities, the campus is home to our successful popular music courses. There are extensive on-site facilities for our Sports and Public Service students, including a gymnasium, sports hall, climbing wall, fitness testing laboratory, therapy and massage suite, and numerous pitches on which to develop skills.

Castleford CampusFormerly known as the skillsXchange, the Castleford Campus houses state-of-the-art vocational facilities. It includes purpose-built engineering facilities combined with construction skills workshops which have been designed with input from professionals within the industry. As well as Construction and Engineering, Motor Vehicle and Hair and Beauty courses are delivered here and the campus is also home to our Apprenticeships Unit.

Located at Glasshoughton just off the M62, five minutes from Glasshoughton station and with excellent public transport links to Castleford, Pontefract and Wakefield, the campus provides an outstanding learning environment for students across the District.

Waterton BuildingIn 2012 the College was delighted to acquire the Grade 2 listed Wakefield Museum building, which was built in 1823, to develop into a Performing Arts Centre. Situated only a little over 300 metres from the Wakefield City Campus, the Waterton Building includes as its centre-piece the 160 seat Mechanics’ Theatre, named in honour of one of the building’s previous functions. The centre also includes drama and dance studios, spacious rehearsal rooms and backstage workshops.
