It has been a frustratingpreseason for the CamdenBulldogs.

A number of key return-ing players have been onthe shelf with various mal-adies, and some may notbe ready when the seasonstarts Friday at Spring

    Valley.

There isnt anythingserious, but were going toerr on the side of caution,Bulldogs coach JimmyNeal said. If nothing else, the situation has givensome other guys a betterchance to show what theycan do, and a couple havereally taken advantage ofthe opportunity.

Camden is coming off a9-2 season marred by afirst-round playoff exit.

Of course, no one ishappy with the outcomeunless you win it all, butlast years team was greatto be around, said Neal,

who is entering 14th sea-son as Bulldogs coach. They really bought in-

    to the team concept and

played to the limit of itsability. This years team ismore talented and has a

chance to have a good sea-son, but we dont know theintangible qualities yet.

Offensively, the Bull-dogs welcome back toprunning back JoJoBrevard and center Jo-seph Branham, tackle Sel-

wyn Hickmon and guardsDelton Bradford and Ja-mal Jackson up front.Branham and Hickmanare three-year starters.

Brevard rushed for 456 yards and sixtouchdowns.

The big question is thepassing portion of Cam-dens spread approach.

The new quarterback is junior Josh Council, whois the cousin of former starRobert Josh Council. He

almost beat out the de-parted Dillon Morrow forthe staring nod as a soph-

    omore last season.Seniors Darelle Smith

and Tripp Speaks are theheadliners among a most-ly new receiving cast.Smith started in the sec-ondary a year ago, whileSpeaks served in a backuprole until an injury latelast season gave him reg-ular playing time.

On defense, the frontseven should be thestrength. Sheldon Wrightand Darren Chestnut arethree-year starters upfront, and Hamid Mathisis a standout at outsidelinebacker.

The big question is thesecondary, which has noreturning starters to buildaround.

    ROSTER

    After wanderingthrough the prep football

wilderness for three sea-sons, Ridge View andcoach Raymond Jenningsare operating with a senseof urgency.

Weve gone through apretty rough stretch latelyfor a number of reasons, said Jennings, entering hiseighth season. Weve hadto deal with smaller num-bers because of the split

with Blythewood, madetoo many mental mis-takes, have not hadenough commitment tothe program, and last year

we paid the price for play-ing so many young kids.

In other words, wevejust been trying to survive.

But this year, I think westart punching back.

Jennings also is chang-ing his mind-set.

Im coaching like itsmy last year, he said. Were not going to bemarried to the two-pla-toon system. If somebodycan help us at two spots, theyll play both ways. Onspecial teams, the 11 fast-est guys who like to hit willplay.

The goal is to becomerelevant again after win-ning eight of 34 games thepast three seasons. The

    youthful Blazers finished

2-9 last season, went 0-5 inRegion 4-4A and missedthe playoffs for the second

year in a row.The strength of last

years team was defense, and the unit should be bet-ter with the return of line-

men Obinna Ntiasagwe(73 tackles, 10 tackles forloss, three sacks), CurtisBey (48, 10, 2) and Ren-

wick McNeil (27, 5, 3.5),linebacker JamarcusSharpe (54 tackles), cor-nerback Chauncey Bess(60 tackles, five passesbroken up) and safety Bri-an Butler (49 tackles, twointerceptions).

Jennings realizes thekey to a turnaround hing-es on the offense scoring

more points. Last season, the Blazers tallied 10touchdowns.

The new quarterback issenior Kyle Baldwin, whoalso is a baseball player. The new-look offensiveline features senior guard

William Reeves and juniortransfers Troy Perrotti and

Armonte Porterfield. Thereceiving corps has talentif not experience, Jen-nings said.

The proven commodityon offense is running backGary Bradshaw, who ranfor 574 yards and caught15 passes as a sophomorea year ago.

Spring Valley took posi-tive steps in 2010 in its firstseason under Miles Al-dridge. The Vikings, who

went 3-30 from 2007-09, won three games andstayed close in severalothers.

    But Aldridge still is notpleased.

Were still crossing thecommitment bridge, theformer college assistantcoach said. Weve madesome progress but nothingsubstantial yet. When ourplayers are fully committedto the program and to be-coming better footballplayers, then well have abetter learning situation.

    We have some good play-

ers, but well only become agood football team when

we all are doing the rightthings.

    Execution is the bottomline.

Our motto is Prove it onthe field, Aldridge said. You can talk about makingprogress, but the resultsare out there for everybodyto see. The bottom line is

we still have a way to go. Itsstill very much a process

were going through. The Vikings, who have

not qualified for the Class4A playoffs since 2006, are

looking for improvementin all phases, but shoringup the defense is the toppriority.

We simply gave up toomany big plays, especiallyin the passing game, and

we must get better playfrom our linebackers, Al-dridge said. Were not in aposition where we can af-ford to trade touchdowns

with teams and still hope to win. Were not goodenough to make up for mis-takes on a regular basis.

Spring Valleys defensewill be young and unprov-

en. Aldridge said moststarting spots are up forgrabs. The one veteran issenior outside linebacker

Trent Bryan, who will beasked to fill a leadershiprole.

On offense, the Vikingswelcome back a number ofreturning seniors: centerLink Hunter, tackle Rich-ard Taylor, quarterback

Austin Hill and runningbacks Craig Steedley andKadrick Thompson.

Juniors Jason Free andMalik Wilson and sopho-more John Miller are in thebackfield mix in Aldridgesoption-based attack.

After flirting with an op-tion-based running attack,Richland Northeast is re-turning to the spread of-fense it abandoned in2010.

The change last year was based on personnel,

and this year we have thekind of kids again youhave to have to run thespread, Cavaliers coach

Jay Frye said. We have abig, good-looking quarter-back who is a strong run-ner and has a good arm,and we have some good, athletic receivers.

This offense isnt newto most of these kids, sothe transition shouldnt bemuch of a problem. If wecan overcome a little inex-perience at a few spots ondefense, we have a chanceto have a pretty goodseason.

The Cavaliers posted a7-5 record last fall and ad- vanced to the state play-offs for the 12th time in 13tries under Frye.

Offensively, RNE has asolid base up front with thereturn of tackle JamesLewis and guards ChrisMiller and DecovianMobley.

Junior quarterback A.C.Whaley is glad to be backin comfortable territoryrunning the spread.

The offense we ran lastseason really did not suit

A.C.s skills, Frye said. The receiving corps

    headliner could be seniorChavarius Curry-Felix,

who played wing back a year ago. Frye expectsCurry-Felix to be the pri-

mary deep threat. The running game is in

good shape with the returnof senior Darius Paulk,

who has two 1,000-yardseasons on his resume.Last year, he ran for 1,032

yards and nine touch-downs on 155 carries.

The defense will set upin a 3-4 for the most part, and 11seniors are likely toreceive regular playingtime.

The anchors up frontare three-year starterSteve Davis at nose guardand Desmond Joyner at

one end spot. Davis had 61tackles and eight sacks a

year ago, while Joynerposted 56 tackles and 3.5sacks.

Top linebacker RyanQuarles has graduated, but Antwan Glover (42tackles) and Rorlanda Gil-more (31) return to formthe new foundation.

The star in the second-ary is three-year starterChris Reeder, who wassecond on the team intackles last season with 91and had three intercep-tions from his free safetyposition.

    Chris is a prospect and

should have a super sea-son, Frye said.

Richland Northeast is returning to the spread offense, which better suits the skills of quarterback A.C. Whaley.MARY ANN CHASTAIN/SPECIAL TO THE STATE

Lugoff-Elgins first sea-son in Class 4A was a studyin contrasts.

The Demons got off to a1-5 start but rebounded inregion play going 4-1 to earn a share of the 6-4Achampionship. But the eu-phoria ended when L-Esuffered a first-round play-off loss at home to AshleyRidge another teammaking its 4A debut in2010.

Overall, I think we did alot of good things, coachScott Jones said. If youdhave told me five years agothat we would not only beplaying in 4A but winninga region championship in

our first year, I wouldnthave believed it. Thats thefirst title weve won here in29 years, so it was a prettybig deal.

Once more, the Demonsmust adapt to the gradua-tion of a large senior class, but Jones is notconcerned.

Weve been in this situ-ation for the past few

years, so its really no bigthing, said the coach, whois entering his 10th season.

We have another bigsenior class ready to takeits turn. This one is one ofthe best senior classes

weve ever had. Theyknow what its like to com-pete at this level, and Ithink we can challenge fora region title again if wecan avoid injuries to some

    key players.Offensively, the Demons

like to keep teams guess-ing with different offen-sive sets the wing-T andthe spread. But with the re-turn of two standout run-ning backs and no sea-soned quarterback or re-ceivers on the roster, the

emphasis figures to be onthe running game.

Seniors Zach Connelland Malik Young are theproven players men in thebackfield. Connell missedhalf of last season with aninjury but became a forceupon his return, runningfor 449 yards and fourtouchdowns while averag-ing 6.5 yards per carry.

Young had 394 yards andthree touchdowns and av-eraged 4.9 yards.

Senior Dalton Simonsand sophomore Shon Bel-ton are dueling atquarterback.

They bring differentthings to the table, butboth are good runners,

Jones said. Its too closeto call now, but no matter

who wins the job, the other

    guy will be playingsomewhere.

Nose guard LadricusTurner, linebacker MarkusKershaw and safety JoshRuiz are the key players ondefense. Connell also ex-cels at linebacker, but hisrole could be limited by hisoffensive workload.

    Coach: Reggie Kennedy

Assistants: Dan Morgan, Don Robinson, Preston Thorne,

    ROSTER

Reggie Kennedy hasbeen coaching for morethan two decades, but thenew Blythewood footballcoach is rejuvenated nowthat his duties as athleticsdirector are off his plate.

This is the first timesince Ive been a headcoach that I can concen-trate strictly on football, and thats one of the mainreasons why I took the

job, said Kennedy, whoguided successful pro-

grams at Kingstree, Or-angeburg-Wilkinson andFairfield Central.

The past few yearswere a grind. The adminis-trative demands took a lit-tle of the fun out of coach-ing for me, but Im feelingrecharged, like Im 21again.

Kennedy, who turned along dormant Kingstreeprogram into a playoff fix-ture and returned FairfieldCentral to contender sta-tus during two stints in

Winnsboro, takes over ateam that has done littlesince going 24-1 and win-

ning a Class 3A statechampionship in its firsttwo seasons. Since movingup to 4A, the Bengals haveposted a combined 17-17record the past threeseasons.

Kennedy, who used tobe a wing-T disciple, willinstall the spread offensehe has embraced sinceleaving Kingstree.

I coached againstBlythewood the past fewseasons, and the one thingthat struck me is the teamdid not seem to have an of-fensive identity, he said. That wont be the casenow. Were a spread team,

and I think the kids are re-sponding to it.

The transition should besmooth with Kennedy hav-ing a veteran quarterbackand a star receiver in tow.Demetric Gray is back un-der center after passing for1,268 yards and 12 touch-downs a year ago, while se-nior receiver Damar Hallcaught 46 balls for 836

yards and 11 touchdowns.Kennedy expects Jerrod

    Davis and James Williams

to share time at runningback. Davis is a slashingrunner who tallied 241rushing yards and caught17 passes in 2010.

But Kennedy said theteams strength should bethe defense, with nine se-niors slated to start. Strongsafety Kyle Edwards, cor-nerbacks Zamardre Wing-field and Aubrey Pressleyand linebackers JoJo

Johnson and Jalen Ham-mett lead the way.

Edwards led the team intackles (110) and intercep-tions (four) last season.

Damar Hall caught 46 passes for 836 yards and 11 touchdowns for Blythewood last season.FILE PHOTOGRAPH/THE STATE
