A Sweet WayTO CHILL.A Sweet WayTO CHILL.

I’m lovin’ it™

To say last year was a disas-ter for the Minnesota Vikings is certainly an understate-ment. What started out as Super Bowl aspirations, turned out to be a three-ring circus re-sulting in a 6-10 record. But one good thing about the NFL is the fact there is a new season every year — al-though not quite guaranteed as the lockout almost wiped out America’s favorite past time. So the 2010 season can be looked upon as water under the bridge, along with several of the main forces who made it into the Vikings first losing season in quite some time. Those who pass under that bridge and into Viking history include lead ringmaster head coach Brad Childress, who was fired just past midway through the season and re-placed by current head coach Leslie Frazier. The preseason carnival of wooing now-retired Brett Favre is also a history nota-tion. The Vikings finally ad-dressed their quarterback sit-uation for the future by select-ing Florida State’s Christian Ponder. But even that selec-tion was tainted a little by the offseason-long NFL lockout, which forced the Vikings to

go out and get a more reliable veteran QB in Donovan Mc-Nabb, because there would be no way a rookie quarterback could take over the reins in a matter of weeks to prepare. But other than the acquisi-tion of McNabb, the Vikings’ offseason additions have been underwhelming. Just recently, another hole was created with the dismiss-al of 10-year left tackle starter Bryant McKinnie. Man, what a disappointing finish to McKinnie’s Viking career, as the already mam-moth tackle from the Univer-sity of Miami came into camp a bit bloated — as in nearly 400-pounds of bloat. McKinnie’s “don’t give a damn” attitude must have been practiced to the fullest extent during the lockout. Even his cholesterol was off the charts, marking him to be a danger of tipping over

dead on the Mankato practice field — and all this coming on the 10th anniversary of Korey Stringer’s death at training camp. Unfortunately McKinnie came to the Vikings after the tragic death of Stringer, which was marked by the team dur-ing this year’s training camp. The big-eating, club-going McKinnie could have learned something from Stringer on how to be a real professional. But in the end, McKinnie’s career was marked by medioc-rity and his legacy will be that of blown potential. McKinnie has lately had a shot of motivation, being signed by Baltimore. But as the Ravens will find out, a few weeks into the season and when McKinnie is once again complacent, quarterback

Joe Flacco will be feeling the hits from de-fensive line-

men firsthand. Even technology has been against McKinnie, as his Twit-ter account backfired on him. Some frustrated Twits were directed towards McKinnie since his release Tuesday, some actually pretty funny. One Twit stated, “Appar-ently, Leslie Frazier was worried about the bridges in Minnesota being able to hold #BryantMcKinnie.” Another thanked McKin-nie “…for going to #TacoBell w/me 2night. I never thought about wrapping a chalupa in a quesadilla in a Mexican pizza b4.” The signing of Colts’ left tackle Charlie Johnson, who has been guarding Peyton Manning’s blindside for the last 49 games, was made and after three preseason games, is looking better and better. Johnson didn’t allow Dal-las Cowboy sackmaster De-marcus Ware gain any sacks, while McNabb was touched only once.

Another big loss came with Seattle signing wide receiver Sydney Rice, who signed a five-year $41 million contract, with $18 million guaranteed. That’s quite a lot of guaran-teed money for a player who has only been able to complete one full season out of four, but make no doubt about it, Rice is a top ball catcher. With the Vikings not dip-ping into the quality end of the wide receiver free agency pool, there is quite a void on the edges. Minnesota did sign the Bears’ fourth wide receiver Devin Aromashodu and Fal-con reject Michael Jenkins. So far, that leaves under-achieving Bernard Berrian and Jenkins at the starting wideout positions, with the talented Percy Harvin in the slot and two solid tight ends in Visanthe Shiancoe and rookie Kyle Rudolph. McNabb is used to not hav-ing quality weapons down the field, so if the Vikings stay pat and not sign San Diego’s Malcolm Floyd or the Jets’ Braylon Edwards, he will be working the middle quite a bit

with Harvin and his two tight ends. But McNabb’s job will be to find those receivers, who need to create separation. Oh, yeah, and hand it off to All-World Adrian Peterson, who maybe seeing his carries increase quite a bit this year. The offensive look will be a much more conservative one, with McNabb hitting the short to interme-diate passes, while feed-ing off of play action, created by Peterson’s gains. It worked to perfec-tion versus Dallas in the third preseason game, after five straight runs by Peterson net-ted just over 30 yards, a play action by McNabb freed up a streaking Berrian. McNabb, who is known for his deep ball, hit Berrian in stride for the long touchdown. If this season is going to have any success, it will be plays

like that which will keep the Vikes in games. The defensive line wasn’t addressed as much as it should have, either. Thus far, the Vikes have opted not to resign nose tackle Pat Williams, instead going with the Saints’ Remi Ayodele, who goes 6-2, 318 pounds. Not a bad exchange, since Williams, along with Kevin

Williams, will probably be suspended for the first two games. Although Kevin Wil-liams has not heard about any suspension, as of yet. But another DT should have been signed and not re-tread Fred Evans. One glaring need, though, is at safety. Madieu Williams

was released after an inglori-ous stint as a Viking. That leaves disappointing Tyrell Johnson and unknown quantity Husain Abdullah as the last line of defense. John-son has looked better, along with Jamarca Sanford, but the secondary still is a big weak-ness of the defense. Expectations are definitely tapered, as they should be.

Linebacker Chad Green-way was stated as saying the Vikings can go .500 or better. Quite the difference from a year ago, but at the very least, this training camp does pro-vide hope for the future with a potential franchise quarter-back in Ponder and a level-headed head coach in Frazier.

The 2011 season will be one of progression for the young Frazee Hornets, who lost the majority of their team to grad-uation last spring. But the talent is there for head coach Jim Rader’s squad, which will have to earn their experience through the first couple of weeks of the season. “We don’t have a lot of ex-perience back, so our goal is to start gaining some experi-

ence and by the last half of the season, we’ll be ready to roll,” Rader said. “I think by the time playoffs come along, we should have a good shot.” The Hornets do have four senior captains returning, all who started on last year’s team, who include Dan Janu, Rij Koehnen, Cody Piper and Rick Brandt. Frazee has four additional seniors in John Sandberg, Da-kota Zick, Tyler Hansen and Jake Galbrecht. The entire offensive line was a part of the 2010 senior class, so there are plenty of holes to fill up front. Junior Brett Gildersleeve will anchor the line at center, along with Brandt at one of

the tackle positions. There will be up to six or seven other Hornets compet-ing for playing time for the rest of the positions, so depth is strong across the line. “We have plenty of 200-plus pound linemen, who are tough,” Rader said. “They are younger kids, but they are working their butts off to get better.” Junior Baxter Bachmann is back at quarterback, after starting as a sophomore. Janu will also take some snaps, as well. “Baxter is more of a rush-ing quarterback, but he is get-ting better with his passing,” Rader included. “He’s a really slippery runner with decent speed.” The Hornets will need to replace the majority of their rushing yards from last year, with Piper bringing back the most experience at running back. “He can run between the tackles and his vision is very good when he hits the perim-eter, as well,” Rader said of Piper.” Koehnen will also see some rushes from his wing position, while three to four other play-ers will be vying for carries, as well. Janu will be a big target for Bachmann, especially in the

red zone, where the tall tight end will have the height ad-vantage over the majority of the defensive backfield. Other receivers include juniors Zach Nelson, Tyler Ziegler and Cody Nordquist. “We’ll be more balanced than the last two years with a little more passing,” Rader said. Sandberg (defensive line), Brandt (linebacker) and Piper (defensive backfield) will be keys to the Frazee defense, along with Koehnen, who re-turns to his cornerback posi-tion. “Our defense will be physi-cal, although we’re not as big, we are faster,” Rader added. “Overall, the team speed is better.” The Section 8-2A will be as competitive as it has been in quite sometime, with Barnes-ville coming in, along with Hawley and Pelican Rapids being traditional powers.

Although the Hawley Nug-gets have lost some big pro-ducers over the course of the last few years, the 2011 season will feature a complete pack-age and make no qualms about it, the goals are the same. “Nothing has changed, we are still expecting to challenge for the conference and then move on and challenge for the section,” said Hawley head coach Peder Naatz. “Yeah, we don’t have any massive kids

on the line, no crazy backs who will put up 3,000 rushing yards, but we will be a multi-faceted team.” A big change from the four straight years of making the Class 2A state semifinals, will be that games will be closer. That’s due to the fact that Hawley moved to the competi-tive Heart O’Lakes Conference Classic. “It will be much more dif-ferent, there might not be

those games where we have to slow down after halftime because of a lop-sided score,” Naatz said. “But for the coach-ing staff, it will be fun going against teams who are bigger and better. I also believe that will help us prepare for the playoffs better, as well.” The Nuggets will still rely on their normal tough de-fense, which will be led by its stringent line. Returning on the D-line includes senior Cassidy Vio-let, junior Devon Pekas and senior Isaac Kelly. Naatz said

there will be an open competi-tion for the last defensive end position. With a good defensive line in front of them, the lineback-ing group can roam a little more and find the holes devel-oping for opposing running backs. Clogging the lanes and pa-trolling the edges will be se-niors Riley Burns and Patrick Arens , who each have solid lateral speed, with the for-

mer entering his third year as starter. “I’m pleased with our size on defense, because our guys spent a lot of time working on that during the offseason,” Naatz said. The offensive line will once again dictate how the rush-ing game will go and there are some gaps to be filled yet. Violet has the lone position nailed down, with a host of other linemen vying for play-ing time. Senior Keifer Hinrichs and junior Hunter Lawson

will each see time at quarterback, with several oth-er younger arms fighting for play-ing time, who can all throw well and rush the ball. There will be some new looks in the backfield, with Arens, Burns, se-

nior Nick Bjorndahl and se-nior Brady Pekas all seeing time carrying the ball. “Arens is a straight-ahead type of runner and the rest have good speed,” Naatz said. “Overall, our speed is up a lit-tle and we are more athletic.” Junior Josh Johnson will be a good target from his tight end position, while Devon Pe-kas will see some balls come his way through the air. “We won’t have just one

player to depend on, it’ll be a team effort,” the Hawley coach said of his offensive output. “But overall, our goals will stay the same and we’ll go out and play Hawley football.”

When a team starts a bunch of young players, eventually those youngsters become sea-soned veterans. That’s the route the Lake Park-Audubon Raiders took last year, with only three se-niors on the roster. But those dividends of playing those in-experienced players will be paying off for the 2011 season. “We’ll have the same kids from last year, only a year older,” said LP-A head coach Jed Swegarden. “They are tal-ented, now they just have to step it up.” Speed will be the Raider’s most vital weapon, with a trio of running backs possessing it, including junior Nate Renner, seniors Chase Zeller and Wy-

att Wixo. “They are super athletes and fast,” Swegarden added. “The running backs won’t be utilized as much in the pass-ing game, though, because we do have some pretty good wide receivers, too. We’ll keep the backs in to protect the quar-terback.” Sophomore Mason Swegar-den will be taking the snaps for the Raiders under center, which allows the move of Wixo to running back, where he can be more of a threat. “Our QB’s are asked to dis-tribute the ball to our play-makers,” coach Swegarden said. “Mason is knowledge-able about the game, which being a coaches’ kid helps. I feel comfortable with Mason at QB.” The offensive line will also

be solid, with the return of ju-nior Matt Pepper, senior Jor-dan Lange and senior Bryce Bartunek. “The team will be a bit more dynamic than it was a year ago,” Swegarden noted. The defense will also bring back a load of experience, in-cluding Pepper at middle line-backer and Wixo anchoring the defensive backfield. Bar-tunek will also man the defen-sive end position, making it tough to run the edges. “We played well at times last season, but the defense needs to be more consistent and aggressive this year,” Swegarden said. With nine starters back, expectations are elevated, but there still needs to be hard work put out by the Raiders. They will have to do it in one of the toughest sections in Section 6-1A, which includes Mahnomen, Pillager, West Central, Ottertail Central and Browerville. “No matter what seed you have, it’s going to be against a team who has traditionally been tough,” Swegarden said. “It will be important to jockey yourself to get a home playoff game, just to get a little edge.”

There will be a new Section 8-1A champion this coming season and it’s not because the defending champs Mahnomen isn’t up to the task of repeat-ing. Far from it, in fact, but the Indians will be vying for an-other section championship this year, after being moved to the tough and rugged Section 6-1A. “It’s going to be a very tough section to get out of,” said Mahnomen head coach John Clark Jr. “But the ex-pectations at Mahnomen are always elevated because of the tradition.” That tradition was added on last year, when the Indians made their 19th state tourna-ment, before losing to Barnes-ville in the quarterfinals. Now, the Indians will have

to get past the likes of tradi-tional football powers of Pil-lager, West Central, Brower-ville, Ottertail Central and Lake Park-Audubon — which all reside in Section 6-1A. Mahnomen will have to re-load, though, after losing the bulk of their offense with run-ning back Alex LaVoy gradu-ating with his 1,731 rushing yards. He also was the anchor on defense at linebacker. But as per the usual, the Indians have those bullets to reload for another potential state run. “We’re going to have to ex-periment a little to see what we’re best at, but I think we’ll be more versatile this year,”

Clark said. “We will be able to spread it around and throw a little more.” Mahnomen has two solid options at quarterback to re-place departed Dylan Stevens. Junior Jacob Pavek is a lanky lefty, who has some good zip on his ball and junior Garret Hoffner possesses the running ability. A third option at QB is sophomore Trevor Haugo, who Clark describes as “a tre-mendous athlete, who’s raw, by talented.” LaVoy’s yards from last year will probably be split up a little, between senior full-back Avery Fairbanks and wingbacks senior Mitch Koch-mann, Hoffner and sophomore Tristan Bjerke. “Avery doesn’t have blaz-ing speed, but he is tough and does the dirty work,” Clark said. “Our wings have good quickness and decent speed. It

will be a chain-moving type of offense.” Senior Lucas Littlewolf will return as one of the area’s top tight ends, along with Haugo. Targets will include senior Zach Polaschek, junior Jason Schoenborn and Patrick Por-ter. “They all have sure hands,” Clark said of his receiving corp. The unit which drove the Indians down the field last year will need to be replaced, with only one offensive line-man back in sophomore Kal Handyside. There will be some switch-ing going on to fill the offen-sive line with solid athletes

in senior Aaron Vipond, who moves from RB to guard and senior Lucas Littlewolf. At tackle, Handyside will see time, along with junior Jake Hedstrom and junior Nick Otto will fill the center position. “We’ll mix it up a little on the line, yet, but we will not be able to go out and just pound like we did last year,” Clark said. “We have athletes on the line who are able to pull, along with some boot action.” Much like last season, the defense will be key for the In-dians and there shouldn’t be much of a dropoff, despite los-ing their leader in LaVoy. The defense will employ a tough and athletic look, which follows the tradition of Mah-nomen football. “We have enough experi-ence back, too, so we should be pretty decent on that side of the ball,” Clark said. Hedstrom will anchor the line at tackle, along with Handyside at the other inside position. The end positions will be filled by Littlewolf and Pavek, who both started last year.

Otto will be Mahnomen’s starting middle linebacker, with Fairbanks and Vipond on the outside, along with Bjerk. Hoffner is the lone return-er in the defensive backfield, with Haugo and Polaschek

providing some athleticism at the cornerback and safety po-sitions. “The defensive backfield is a work in progress,” Clark said.

(Left) Head coach John Clark Jr. goes through some specifics during a drill. (Top) The Mahnomen offense will have some new looks, but hopefully the same re-sults.

“It’s going to be a very tough section to get out of.”Indian head coach John Clark Jr.

There will be 11 seniors to lead the potent Ulen-Hitterdal Spartans into the 2011 season, which makes them a contend-er by the time the playoffs come rolling around. The Spartans will be test-ed early, too, and will know where they stand when they host nine-man power Stephen-Argyle in the season opener Thursday, Sept. 1. But no matter how that con-test turns out, Ulen-Hitterdal brings back a bevy of talent and experience, which will make them a dangerous team nonetheless. “We’re going to be rely-ing on those 11 seniors,” said U-H head coach Dustin Flaten. “Our expectations will be that we are right up there in the

conference and the section.” The offensive line will set the pace for the Spartans, with eight players being able to play any of the positions. Those include seniors Tra-vis McCollum, Jerrell Green, Troy Peterson (tight end) and junior Jacob Brooks. The majority is big, as well, going 215-plus pounds. “They are good at their rush blocking, so we’ll be able to pound the ball,” Flaten in-cluded. Benefiting from the stout O-line will be the deep running back corp., which includes se-niors Calvin Oberg, Nolan Bri-ard, Green and Joe Iverson. “Kelvin will be our fullback, who has good speed and is just an amazing blocker,” Flaten said. “Briard will be our go-to guy, who has good vision and is able to make the cut.”

Junior Landon Schultz was the Spartan’s starter at quar-terback in 2010 and returns, bringing a good arm in the passing game and is a smart, knowledgeable signal caller. His targets will include Peterson, who will have good range at tight end, Briard and Green. “We won’t be the flashiest offense, but I’m expecting big things,” Flaten said. The defense should be fresh through the season, with up to eight players shuffling through the defensive line, with up to 13 players filling

For well over 30-plus years, John “Bomber” Clark was the head man on the sidelines dur-ing Waubun football games. This season, it’s round two for the Bombers to be led by a Clark — just not John. John’s son, Paul, was hired on by Waubun in late July to take over the head coaching position for the Bombers, but dad isn’t in retirement any-more, either. Paul brought John “Bomb-

er” Clark back to be the de-fensive coordinator and with how young the Bombers are this season, plenty of coaching will be needed. “We are very young with only three seniors out,” Paul Clark said. “But the team is picking up my concepts.” The Bombers will be a mys-tery coming into the season with plenty of new players at new po-sitions. But Clark believes it can be a team which progresses well through the season. Senior running back Sam Lerud is back and will be the

core players this season after a solid junior campaign in the backfield. “He will be everything for us,” Clark said. At quarterback, junior Ryan McArthur will take the snaps, while senior Alex Kent will anchor both lines. “Alex is a big boy and will be a vital player on the offen-sive line,” Clark said. “(Ju-nior) Drake Kier is also a nice surprise for us on the line.” With Joe Tieken added to the line, the Bombers will have plenty of good size in

front of Lerud. That will be crucial, since Clark is installing a run-heavy offense. “We’ll be a rushing team with some play action,” the Bomber coach said. Paul Clark was the head coach in Warroad for the past three years, but was let go this past summer. Fortunately, for him, the Waubun head coach-ing job opened when Jason McCloskey left the position. “Nine man football is new to me, but I’m learning in each practice,” Clark said. “I bleed Bomber Blue, so I’m lucky to be here. Having (John Clark) on staff gives us instant cred-ibility, since he knows every-

thing about the kids and about Waubun football.” Defensively, the Bombers will be much like on offense, inexperienced. But with the defensive line having some size and experience, it will be based there. “We’ll take it step by step and we’ll be better each week,” Clark stated.

Head Coach Mike Jordahl enters his second season at the helm of the Perham football team coming off a disappoint-ing 2-7 season and a playoff demon no team wants to wait nine months to exorcise.

Down 20-14 late in the game, Jordan Hein, then a sopho-more, led a 13-play drive from his own 36 yard line, in driving rain, to inches from the Thief River Falls goal line with un-der 90 seconds remaining. A fumble at the goal line ended the Yellowjackets season and spoiled the upset.

“The key to the season will be depending on our defense, scoring points and using our experience from last year to make us mesh as a team,” Jor-dahl said.

Hein and Gabe Pankonin rotated quarterback duties un-til midway through the season when an injury to Pankonin gave full-time duties to Hein.

Hein gets the nod at quar-terback to start this season with senior Pankonin lining up as one of the main options in the backfield with Mike Wiskow, also a senior.

Wiskow had his biggest game of the 2010 campaign in the playoff loss to Thief River Falls rushing for 135 yards.

The trio gives the Yellow-jackets experience at the skill positions under and behind center. Hein’s versatility will allow Perham to use all parts of the field in the shotgun op-tion offense.

Hein will have four senior wideouts to throw to: Chris Ruther, Matt Shipman, Dillon Shields and Andre Moberg. Junior Eric Brauch was a key

underclassmen at wide re-ceiver last season and will be another important target.

Points were at a premium last season and to string victo-ries together the Yellowjackets will simply have to put more points on the scoreboard.

“We need to score more than last year,” Jordahl said.

Perham was outscored 203-133 and averaged nearly eight points less per game than their opponents. (22.4 to 14.8 per game)

Nearly a third of Perham’s season point total came in a 46-20 blowout of Roseau in week seven. Perham’s only other victory was a 12-6 overtime squeaker over winless Park Rapids Area in week two.

Roseau departed the North Heart O’ Lakes Conference in the offseason for the Heart O’ Lakes Classic Conference and was replaced by Section 7, Class 4A powerhouse De-

troit Lakes. The Lakers are the only 4A school in the HOL-North. The other six teams are all Class 3A in Section 8.

Since 1992, Detroit Lakes has four state football titles (1992, 1993, 1995 and 2001) and will feature standout quarter-back 6-foot-4 senior Joe Moll-berg, who passed and rushed for over 1,000 yards last sea-son.

The Yellowjackets face the Lakers Friday, Oct. 14, in De-troit Lakes. The two teams also got a look at each other at the last preseason scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 27.

Perham also features a statured leader in 6-foot-2, 275-pound senior tackle Jesse Hein.

“Jesse Hein will be a great veteran leader on the line,” Jordahl said. “We will have some great ex-perience com-ing back to

Two victories in the past four seasons have the New York Mills Eagles football team looking to reverse that trend.

The Eagles were 1-7 overall last season.

“We want to be more com-petitive,” Head Coach Matt Radniecki said.

Radniecki, in his third stint as coach for the Eagles, has the numbers this year with six more kids out than last season totaling 45 gridders, 26 being from the freshman and sophomore classes.

The program hit a low in 2009 with only 28 players suit-ed up.

“Football is a numbers game, so we’re happy with that,” Radniecki said. “We’ll have a better team, but we will start a lot of sophomores and we can’t afford any inju-ries at key positions.”

Radniecki coached NY Mills from 1989-1998 and re-turned for the 2002-2006 sea-sons, before firing up again last season. He led the Eagles to their only state tournament berth in 2006.

J.J. Weller and Bryan Dun-rud also return as assistant coaches.

The majority of offensive threats will be replaced from last year’s team.

Junior Charlie Peeters takes over for graduated se-nior Tanner Wegscheid at quarterback. Peeters saw ac-tion last season but this will be his first full season under center.

Shane Novak, who broke bones in his wrist during pre-season last year, as a sopho-more, will handle the ball at tailback with Tyler Patron filling fullback duties.

Patron has to ability to pick up necessary yards in short yardage situations. No-vak, if he can get to the second level, has the speed to break big runs.

Peeters will look to throw the ball to Taylor Ericksrud at wide receiver and has some size at tight end in the form of Noah Pesola. Pesola’s height should prove valuable in the Eagles’ passing game.

Of the eight games played last season, the Eagles were in half of them, but suffered four blowouts.

“Our schedule got more difficult this year. We want to avoid those blowouts.”

A realignment of the Prai-rie Conference, creating two divisions, one comprised of smaller schools and the oth-er larger schools has added more competition from dis-tricts with larger class sizes and removed two schools, Parkers Prairie and Pillager, schools that compare more in size with NY Mills.

Pillager moved to the North Star Conference and Parkers Prairie dropped to nine-man.

According to Radniecki, when he started coaching nearly 20 years ago, NY Mills used to be the second largest school in the conference. The Eagles now find themselves the second smallest school.

NY Mills moves from the Prairie Conference – North to the South division. They will play five conference games versus Ottertail Central, Browerville, Kerkoven-Mur-dock-Sunburg, Royalton and West Central Area and three cross-conference games.

The Eagles open the season with two cross-conference games against Upsala/Swan-ville Area and Osakis, both at home, before getting into the meat of their conference schedule. They finish the season with a tall task on the road at last year’s Class 1A runners-up Barnesville.

Concerning the realign-ment, Radniecki noted the po-tential for some good natural rivalries.

Rebuilding will continue in New York Mills with play-ers getting a second straight year under Radniecki and a growing familiarity with his schemes on both sides of the ball.

“I’ve got a better feel for our talent and the players are more familiar with what we are going to do scheme-wise.”

Radniecki brings a positive attitude to a program that has had a string of less than stel-lar seasons.

“I’m just lucky to be able to coach. Having fun is what high school sports are all about and hopefully, we can accomplish that again this year.”

anchor the offen-sive line, as well.

The Hein brothers, both three-sport standouts, are the two returning all-conference football award winners from last year’s squad giving a family quality to leading the team.

“Our team’s leadership is cohesive-ness and working together,” Jordahl said. “They all know who the leaders are.”

On defense, the Yellowjackets will run a base 5-2 formation with a 3-5-3 look depending on game situations.

“We have good experience coming back on our D-line and in the defensive backfield with a young, but hopeful linebacking corps,” Jordahl said.

Pequot Lakes and Thief River Falls

tied for the HOL-North conference ti-tle last season with matching records of 5-1.

Detroit Lakes will factor in as the team to beat. The Lakers were 7-3 last season, as an independent in search of a conference. The Lakers played a schedule that featured four games against North Dakota schools.

Perham opens the season with a bang against loathed rival Pelican Rapids at Meinhover field in Perham Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.

The Vikings held Perham to less than 100 yards in last season’s opener drubbing the Yellowjackets 31-7.

A start to ridding the Yellowjackets of last year’s sting is a vengeful victory over Pelican Rapids in week one.

Ironically, some of the best team players come from some of the smallest communities. That’s because rural America has always valued a spirit

of cooperation, whether raising crops or raising athletes.

The quarterback’s closest teammate lives three pastures, four fences and a creek away, but you’d never know it come game night.

We know the value of community co-ops.

There is plenty of change heading the way of the Detroit Lakes football team, which will bring new challenges and obstacles, but also a nice re-freshing look to the season. But the Lakers will be fac-ing these new challenges with a solid, all-around good team. “Our goal is to be good by playoff time and we have a great bunch of kids to work with this season,” said DL head coach Flint Motschen-bacher. “They have put them-selves in a position to be suc-cessful and they are a good example to the younger kids. “But now, they need to get it done on the field.” The changes mostly come with DL’s opponents, since they will open their new Heart O’Lakes Conference schedule, as well as play in a new sec-tion. The Lakers’ travel schedule has gone down dramatically, changing from road trips to Duluth to away games to East Grand Forks, Pequot Lakes and Park Rapids. The HOL North Conference contains DL, Thief River Falls, Perham, Staples-Motley, Park Rapids, Crookston and East Grand Forks. “We are excited to be-ing part of the HOL North,” Motschenbacher said. “It lim-its our travel and it will be a

very good, competitive confer-ence.” The Lakers also have been moved from Section 8-4A to Section 7-4A, which includes Bemidji, Duluth Denfeld, Grand Rapids, Hermantown and Hibbing. Bemidji has won the section the last three years and brings back a heavy contingent of ex-perience.

“It’s not as deep as Sec-tion 8-4A, but the section will be very good nonetheless,” Motschenbacher stated. The Lakers enter 2011 with one of the sought after quar-terbacks in the state in senior Joe Mollberg. The DL quarterback is en-tering his third year as the starting signal caller and has been heavily recruited by

each of North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota, as well as se-rious looks from the Univer-sity of Iowa Hawkeyes. But Mollberg’s focus is still on the Red and White and any outside distractions won’t pull his attention away from Laker wins. “Joe has told me he is a Laker first and that’s his main

concern,” Motschenbacher said. “He has worked hard to be where he is at and he has become a dual-threat quarter-back. “The big thing with him is he’s is react-ing and play-ing, which ex-perience has been a big key to that.”

T h e offense will be built around M o l l b e r g ’ s

talents, which will be more explosive and more wide open to put pressure on defenses. Mollberg has some seri-ous threats down the field in senior Brian Labat, who can act as a big time receiver split wide or a rusher at running back. Senior Rick Hutchinson will also be legitimate threat on the outside, with steady hands and high athletic abil-ity for yards after the catch. “We are expecting big things out of these guys,” Motschenbacher said. “Brian is very versatile, he’s a play-maker.” Junior Kirk McLeod will also see time split out wide and will be a reliable target from Mollberg’s arm. The Lakers can also hit a defense up front with sopho-more fullback Michael Her-zog, who possesses “tremen-dous speed”. The slots are also a weap-on to be used in the offense, which includes juniors Taylor Magnuson, Stephen Erb and Labat. “Our team speed should be improved from the last sever-al years, as well,” Motschen-bacher said. The offensive line returns only one in senior Josh Ol-son, who will anchor the unit. Depth is good, but experience is thin. “We have nine kids there who are fighting for spots, but we need a couple of them to step it up,” Motschenbacher said. “We have a good mix of size on the line, we just want a few to step up and win those positions.” Motschenbacher hopes to see an improved defense this season, with experience pret-ty shallow, as well. Senior David Perry is the lone defensive lineman back at end, while Labat has been moved from linebacker to

strong safety, where he can have more space to roam. At linebacker, the Lakers will be young, but talented, in junior Reed Johnson, senior Casey Fonder and junior Nick Eckman. “We’re working hard on tackling and the fundamen-tals,” the DL coach said. The defensive backfield will have Labat, Herzog, Steven Labine, McLeod, Erb, junior

Derek Long, Mollberg and ju-nior Austin Eiter. “This year, we’re looking to play more people because everyone has worked hard to gain playing time,” Motschen-bacher said. The Lakers will have five home games this season and will be on the road to East Grand Forks, Park Rapids and Pequot Lakes.

The 2010 journey to the Class 2A state playoffs will pay off in dividends for the 2011 version of the Pelican Rapids Vikings. The Vikings (7-5 last year) claimed the 8-2A champion-ship, before falling to Ottertail Central in the state quarterfi-nals. But a good majority of this year’s Vikings are back on the field and had that state taste, so they are not going to want to give the section title back to anyone. “Last year’s team surprised a lot of people when it came together in the post season and we earned the section championship,” said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Hau-gen. “This is a team which has the potential to be back in the championship game again this year and is definitely a goal.” There will be 24 returning let-terwinners from last year’s team, including five offensive starters and six defensive starters. The skill positions have a good amount of experience returning, including junior quarterback Devin Schell, who took over the position from senior Casey Brugge-man, who was injured during the season. Schell is a good athlete with the ability to run, as well get-ting comfortable throwing the ball out of the pocket. “The experience Devin gained should help become more comfortable in the posi-tion this year,” Haugen said. Bruggeman will still be a vital component of the offense and defense at running back and strong safety. “Casey is one of the best strong safeties who has ever played at Pelican Rapids and will be a key to our success de-fensively,” Haugen said. “Af-ter playing QB for most of the

last year, he will get moved around quite a bit this year and will be versatile.” The Vikings’ linebacking corp. will be anchored by senior Luke Halbakken and junior Tucker Forsgren on the outside. Halbakken led the team with four blocked kicks last year, while Forsgren was the sack leader with six. “Luke is an excellent defen-sive player who was second on the team in sacks and in tackles for loss,” the Pelican Rapids coach said. “Tucker worked very hard in the off-season to become bigger and stronger. Look for him to be a real impact player on both sides of the ball.” The duo also will be reliable targets at split end for Schell. Having a consistent kicker is also a rare weapon to have and the Vikings have just that in senior Cris Molina, who was 22-26 on extra point kicks in 2010 and 7-8 on field goals, with a long of 35 yards. “Molina makes us a threat to score every time we’re in-side the opponents’ 30-yard-line,” Haugen stated. The offensive line will still have four new starters, so ad-justments will be made early, while depth is still a concern in the interior of the defense. Haugen is also hoping big things from fullback/line-backer Tanner Grahn and center/linebacker Marshall Ohe. The Heart O’Lakes Confer-ence did lose West Central and Wadena-Deer Creek, while gaining Hawley and Roseau.
