MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE THROUGH TECHNICAL INNOVATION

Norton Cast Products specialises in the production of high quality engineering cast components for industry.

We have the fl exibility and capacity to accommodate a wide range of cast alloys and weights. Many of the projects we undertake are bespoke, working with specialist materials to a challenging brief.

Norton Cast is a technically advanced, forward thinking company. Founded by the current chairman, JB Ingall, in 1978, the company is independently owned, enabling us to pursue a continual programme of investment. Our strong customer base includes a broad range of leading industrial companies worldwide.

At Norton Cast we fully understand the importance of consistent quality. Each product is subject to stringent quality control standards before reaching fi nal inspection. Norton Cast is approved by Lloyds Register Quality assurance to BS ISO 9001:2008. We hold a number of quality assurance accreditations, including NORSOK and DNV.

LATERAL THINKING PRODUCES ENGINEERING RESULTS

At Norton Cast we approach projects in a different way. We have a reputation for taking on a challenge, often something unique or unusual that other foundries would not consider. When a project calls for a fresh approach, such as casting with an open face, we dedicate time and resources to thinking through the process until we fi nd a way to manufacture the product. We are willing to invest and innovate to meet a technically complex brief, testing the boundaries of traditional casting capabilities. This willingness to accept a challenge places us in high demand with a repeat business representing 90% of our turnover.

7/7 Permanent Memorial, Hyde ParkBrief: to create 52 single columns (stelae), one to commemorate each life lost in the July 7 attack. Each stelae was to be 3.4m high and to be unique, with individual characteristics brought about by the casting process.

Process: Norton Cast combined the use of contemporary engineering materials with an archaic technique of crafting to achieve the required, unique, result. The stelae were cast in an open mould, exposing one face to the atmosphere. 800kg of molten stainless steel was used for each casting, this stainless steel was of an enhanced grade that was produced and tested by Norton Cast specifi cally for this project.

The inscription on each stelae was cast in 4mm relief and was clean and fl awless, in contrast to the otherwise organic as-cast element. The stainless steel plaque listing the names was large and highly complex. The letters were cast in 10mm relief and ground back to 5mm.

CAPTURING A UNIQUE F

“Norton Cast showed great sensitivity towards each cast element physically representing a life lost and appreciated that a sculptural

result was required to differentiate one stelae from another with subtle nuances, rather than creating engineered equivalence in all 52 castings.”

Carmody Groarke, Architects

GLOBAL DELIVERY OF PRECISION AND QUALITY

Norton Cast has an excellent team, with in-house expertise in metallurgy, methoding, moulding, casting, fettling, heat treatment and inspection.

Using a mix of highly qualifi ed graduate engineers, in house training and an extensive apprentice scheme we have created a hub of talent. We are proud of our record of staff retention, keeping the expertise that only time can bring within our company. In line with the forward thinking attitude at Norton, we operate a profi t sharing scheme with our employees, recognising their vital role in building our successful organisation.

Demand for our products and expertise comes from a wide range of industries, with up to 30% of our output going for export. Our understanding of industrial processes positions us as an ideal partner with the commitment to invest in specialised technologies, such as ceramic coremaking, in response to the requirements of our customers.

Principle markets include:• Chemical and Petro Chemical• Valve Components• Pump Components• Power Generation• Desalination• Defence• Offshore• Aerospace• General Engineering• Heat Resisting• Non Galling

Pattern MakingWe offer full pattern making facilities. Patterns can be manufactured using our state of the art 3D modelling techniques or from conventional drawings. We have in house method engineers to ensure patterns are set up with the correct runnerand feeding systems.

MouldingWe use Phenolic Ester chemical binder system, with a high level of sand reclamation. The extensive use of chromite and zircon refractory sands and mould coatings contribute to achieving our consistently high quality standards.

Core MakingIncorporating semi automatic, PLC controlled core blowers using the Cold Box binding process. This method ensures dimensionally stable cost effective core production and enables us to offer short run prototype work and higher volume production, dependent upon our customers’ requirements.

CeramicsA highly technical process that can be used to produce impellers, diffusers and other complex shapes in various grades of nickel and cobalt alloys and stainless, duplex alloys and carbon steels. The ceramic method of Mould and Core manufacture produces a dramatically improved surface fi nish resulting in improved hydraulic effi ciencies.

Melting & CastingWe achieve optimum melting effi ciency for castings weighing from 1kg up to 3000kgs from our extensive range of high frequency electric induction furnaces. We work with a wide range of steels and nickel and cobalt alloys. Castings may be supplied in a black state or fully machined.

FettlingFinishing services for castings include burning, arc-air, cutting, grinding, shotblasting, heat treatment and welding. All welders and welding procedures are qualifi ed in accordance with ASME IX and BS 4570.

Heat TreatmentNorton Cast have invested heavily in a high temperature gas fi red heat treatment furnace capable of temperatures of up to 1275 degrees centigrade. The furnace has a water quench facility with automatic tray removal. The time interval from furnace to agitated, externally cooled quench tank is less than 45 seconds.

MachiningWe can supply all castings in a fully machined state. We supply fully machined castings for the oil and gas sector, power generation, petro-chemical and food processing sectors.
