Welcome

Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages

are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.

Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.

VISION STATEMENT

Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a

Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

MISSION OBJECTIVES

•To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and

welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst;

• To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;

• To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among

parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;

• To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God

within and beyond the Parish;

• To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our

assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to

generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

A Reflection: Litany, the BCP

The form of ‘general supplication’ appointed to be sung or said after Morning

Prayer on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It is also included, with the

addition of special suffrages, in the rites of Ordination. It falls into two parts: (1)

the invocation of the Persons of the Trinity, the deprecations, the obsecrations,

the intercessions, and a final section consisting of invocations, Kyrie eleison and

the Lord’s Prayer; and (2) versicles and responses, followed by collects, which

are an adaptation of a special intercession in the time of war. The Litany was

first issued by T. Cranmer is 1544 for use in the processions orders by Henry

VIII at a time when England was at war with Scotland and France. Cranmer

drew mostly on the Latin litanies then in use in England, esp. the Sarum

Rogationtide Litany, but also on M. Luther’s ‘Latin Litany’ of 1529 and the

Deacon’s Litany in the ‘Liturgy of St John Chrysostom’. Though he added little

of nothing of his own, he made a notable change in the rhythm by grouping

several suffrages under one response. In 1544 the invocations of the Trinity were

followed by three invocations of saints; these were omitted when the Litany was

included in the First BCP (1549). Minor changes were made in later versions of

the BCP and the collects at the end have been altered several times. The

appointment of Wednesday and Friday as Litany days coincides with Lutheran

usage.

The Liturgy of the Word

OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated

Reader A reading from the Book of Genesis.

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, "Do not be afraid,

Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord

God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer

of Damascus?" And Abram said, "You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in

my house is to be my heir." But the word of the Lord came to him, "This man shall not

be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir." He brought him outside

and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then

he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed the Lord; and the Lord

reckoned it to him as righteousness. Then he said to him, "I am the Lord who brought

you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess." But he said, "O Lord

God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?" He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three

years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young

pigeon." He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the

other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the

carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon

Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. When the sun had

gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these

pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your

descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river

Euphrates."

Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18

Reader The word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? the Lord is the strength

of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? Antiphon

EPISTLE READING

Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians.

Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the

example you have in us. For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often

told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god

is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But

our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the

Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be

conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all

things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for,

my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, for

Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am

casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I

finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it

is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the

city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired

to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you

were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until

the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

your neighbours, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God,

and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy

sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God.

All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Maker of all things and judge of all people:

We acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness,

Which we from time to time most grievously have committed,

By thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty.

We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings.

and to prepare with joy for the paschal feast;

that reborn through the waters of baptism,

and renewed in the Eucharistic mystery,

we may be more fervent in prayer and more generous in works of love.

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel

Celebrant Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly

Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our

nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;

who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and

sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did

institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that

his precious death, until his coming again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we

receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus

Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of

his most blessed body and blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks,

he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given

for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” +

Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,

saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for

you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in

remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy

holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty

resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do

make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of

everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded.

lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,

Lord our God.

Celebrant And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of

praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and

death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole

Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we

pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy

communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus

Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour

and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

lllAll Amen.

THE THEOLOGY OF SALVATION

The branch of theology concerned with salvation is called soteriology.

It comes from the Greek word for salvation.

Soteriology: The section of Christian theology which treats of the saving

work of Christ for the world. It includes not only the doctrines of the

Atonement and of Grace, but also (1) the doctrine of human nature as

affected by the Fall and by sin, which is the presupposition of Christ’s

work, and (2) the doctrine of man’s final destiny as the result of that work.

you, please make an appointment with one of

the parish priests for another time.

When we take time during Lent to examine

our relationships with God, our neighbour and

ourselves we realize we fall short, and it is a

healing practice to confess our shortcomings

with one of the parish priests.

You can pick up a copy of Examining our

Conscience in the narthex to prepare yourself

for confession if you are needing direction, or

speak with a priest.

REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP

St James' Outreach Committee is currently

assisting with the sponsorship of a refugee

family from Iraq, together with St Mary's

Anglican Church, in Halifax. This elderly

couple fled from their homeland to Syria,

where they were

registered with the UNHCR, and subsequently

selected to come to Canada through the private

sponsorship scheme organized by the Primate's

World Relief and Development Fund.

Unfortunately the outbreak of civil war in Syria

led to the withdrawal of Canada's diplomatic

representatives in Damascus, including the Visa

Office, which deals with refugee affairs. This has

now been relocated to Amman, Jordan. Contact

with the refugee camps in Syria is consequently

all the more difficult.

Because of this disruption, the time for this

couple's medical examinations and chest X-rays

had expired, and they have had to be done again.

This happened in late November, but the results

had to be sent to Paris for verification.

We have had no further news as to when this

couple may be allowed to travel to Canada. Their

daughter, who has already arrived in Halifax, is

naturally extremely anxious.

Your prayers are asked for this family.

THE PASCHAL CANDLE

Most of you are familiar with the Paschal

Candle. It is the first flame lit from the new fire at

the Easter Vigil, which represents the light of

Christ rising to dispel the darkness of our hearts

and minds. The candle is marked by

special symbols: the cross; the Greek letters for

alpha and omega reminding us that God is the

beginning and the end; the current year,

representing God present with us now; and five

grains of incense representing the five wounds of

Christ. The Paschal Candle is processed into the

church at the Easter Vigil and remains in its

holder near the altar throughout the Easter

season, during which it is lit at all Masses held in

the main sanctuary.

The Paschal Candle is specially made and must be

ordered in advance of Easter. It costs in the

neighbourhood of $200. If you would like to

support this meaningful tradition by making a

donation toward the cost of the candle, please add

the amount to your offering envelope, and on the

outside of the envelope write the amount and be-

side it write “Paschal Candle”. If you do not use

envelopes but would like to donate, please call the

Church Office.

PAX EASTER 2013: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The PAX editorial team gives thanks for your

ongoing contributions to our Parish magazine.

We now welcome submissions for our

upcoming Easter issue, the theme of which is

renewing our baptismal vows. This theme

could be addressed in any of the following

ways:

baptism as the beginning of our journey of

conversion to Christ; the significance of

baptism in the liturgy, such as the invitation to

our statement of the Creed ("Let us confess the

faith of our baptism"); exploring the Church's

practice of baptism at some moment in

Christian history; or the importance of

baptism within the Easter liturgies. As usual,

we also welcome submissions on other topics

that you may wish to explore. The maximum

length for written submissions is 500 words.

All submissions, whether articles, photos or

artwork, are due no later than Monday,

February 25th. They can be emailed to

[email protected] or left in the PAX

mail slot just outside the Church office.

NEWS FROM GENERAL SYNOD

Join our push for affordable housing

Ali Symons, General Synod Senior Editor.

Housing continues to be a joint priority for

Anglicans and Lutherans as they support Bill

C-400, a private member's bill calling on the

government to develop a national housing

strategy. Anglican and Lutheran staff leaders

engaged in this issue invite local church

members to connect with MPs about the bill

before it goes before Parliament, Feb. 13.

An estimated 400,000 Canadians do not have

healthy homes. The UN Special Report on

Adequate Housing has observed that "Canada is

one of the few countries in the world without a

national housing strategy."

Bill C-400 recognizes housing as a human right. It

would commit the government to work with

non-profits, the private sector, Aboriginal

communities, and all levels of government in

developing a national housing strategy. With set

timelines and goals, the strategy would then

address the root causes of homelessness and set a

plan to provide housing for all.

Church members are encouraged to write to or

meet with their MPs about Bill C-400 as soon as

possible. Resources are available through

Dignity for All, a campaign co-founded by

long-time ecumenical partner Citizens for

Public Justice. http://dignityforall.ca.

This advocacy push is one example of housing

work Christians do on a daily basis across

Canada.

In Victoria, Evangelical Lutheran churches

network with other non-profits to ensure

adequate housing for all levels of poverty: those

who live on government subsidies, the working

poor, and the lower middle class.

In Winnipeg, St. Matthew's Anglican Church is

converting its property to 25 units of affordable

housing for limited income families, a

neighbourhood resource centre, and a dedicated

worship space. Many more examples exist across

the country, including at a regional level.

On a national level, the Anglican Church of

Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in

Canada are developing a shared resolution on

housing and homelessness to be presented at Joint

Page 30: High Mass Feb 24

St. James’ News & Announcements

Assembly, to be held July 2013 in Ottawa. The

resolution will commit both churches to

continued local action and government advocacy.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

UPDATE FROM DIOCESE

1. TRC National Event, Vancouver.

The dates for the TRC event proper are Sept. 18-

21 (Wednesday-Saturday). In addition, the Indian

Residential Schools Survivors' Society and

Reconciliation Canada, in partnership with many

other community groups including churches, are

planning "book-end" events around the hearings.

These are: the All Nations Canoe Gathering on

Sept. 17; the event "A New Way Forward" at BC

Place on the evening of Sept. 21; and a Walk for

Reconciliation on the morning of Sunday, Sept.

22. Church participation is welcome, and indeed

essential, at all three of these events as well as at

the TRC hearings themselves.

The TRC hearings will be held in the facilities of

the PNE at Hastings Park, which is within the

parish boundaries of St David of Wales. We are

hoping that it will be possible to designate St

David's as the "parish church" for the TRC event,

and that the parish will be able to co-ordinate

spiritual support, and, to a limited extent,

logistical support for our Diocese's participation

in the TRC hearings.

2. Idle No More

This movement continues to gather momentum

across the country and our church has declared its

support for it. Non-indigenous people are

welcome to participate in Idle No More events as

they occur. Bishop Mark MacDonald has asked

that we keep Chief Theresa Spence in our prayers,

and also the meeting this coming Friday between

leaders of the AFN and the Government of

Canada. There are a number of Idle No More

events planned for the Metro Vancouver area this

Friday; please attend an event in your community

if you can, and encourage others to do so.

3. Resources

Useful information and updates can be found on

the website of the Truth and Reconciliation

Commission (www.trc.ca) and KAIROS Canada

(www.kairoscanada.org). Also, Laurel Dykstra,

Clarence Li, or myself would be happy to speak to

a parish, deanery gathering, or other group or

event. If you know of anyone else who would like

to be part of this network and assist in getting the

word out, please let me know and I will add his or
