ACQUISITION
Cameras: – Almost all UHD-1 cameras do HDR in capturing
(Sony F65, Panasonic, ARRI,…), but so far with proprietary OETF curve (example SLOG3 from Sony).
– All are expected to eventually include ITU-HDR TV Recommendation as in draft agreed in ITU-R/WP6C in February 2016. • The HDR TV standard includes the PQ and
HLG OETF curve.
HDR Monitors: – SONY BVM X300
• 30’’ 4K OLED (up to approx 800 nits/candelas per m2) – CANON DP-V2410 4K
• 24’’ 4K LCD display

HDR VIDEO METADATA
• Required for PQ based HDR production and distribution – Different views on whether this will be practical for
real time workflows. Many, but not all, broadcasters think not.
• Ongoing standardization in SMPTE for dynamic metadata needed for Dolby system , expected in 2016.

HDR-SDR-HDR CONVERSION
• HDR-SDR conversion can be very effective, and produce high quality SDR images.
• Solutions exist from technology providers – Proprietary solutions (Technicolor, etc.) – Tone mapping, allows conversion SDR -> HDR – Useful for using Archived content
• Broadcasters can make their own choice.

STANDARDISATION STATUS - PRODUCTION
ITU HDR-TV – Maybe Done, agreed by Study Group 6 in February 2016, formal approval ongoing, final approval expected in two months’ time. Includes both:
PQ (SMPTE 2084) for offline production and HLG (BBC/NHK) for live production
To be noted the Japanese standard ARIB STD B67 which covers HLG.

STANDARDISATION STATUS - DISTRIBUTION
• DVB – Receiver’s specification ongoing, expected end 2016 if agreement can be reached. – HDR10 (PQ) (used for BLURAY) – HLG (SDR backward compatible) – Dolby vision (dual layer) – Technicolor/Philips (dual layer) – SHVC scalable HEVC (dual layer)
• Choice has impact on licence fees.

STANDARDISATION STATUS - ENCODING
• HEVC can cope with all basic HDR curves (supported via signalling) but using other more optimised systems e.g. dual layer would require new codecs

CONSUMER DISPLAY STATUS
• ULTRA HD Premium label made by the UHD Alliance to certify high quality UHD displays
• Two major manufacturers fulfill it
(but more to come): – LG (OLED) Deepest blacks – Samsung (LCD-LED) High
brightness peaks
