Presidential Ramblings September 2017 We Need Your Help!!

In May the Board, after years of discussion, decided to separate our fund raising from our holiday party. Many reasons directed this decision, but a few of them were:

• Many HDR members spend the cold time of the year in warmer climes; • The holiday party should be about the holidays, not fund raising; • We should try to put a little fun into fund raising; and. • Why not get together as a club to celebrate the end of the regular driving

season?

As plans began to come together, we thought that a fund-raising event needed go beyond just another dinner with an auction tacked on. The term “festival” kept cropping up in our discussions. Tracy offered the use of her property and at the end we had a full-blown festival with a band, games and an atmosphere of celebration. The location at Tracy’s horse ranch gave us the name, Porsches and Horses — a Gala and Fall Festival. We will celebrate a growing organization, our individual good fortune in being able to own and drive Porsches, and our ability to positively influence our community.

You will find a copy of the Porsches and Horses announcement in this issue of Downshift. Thanks to Curt’s efforts we also have up to date information on our website. Go to the website and click through the banner. We are in the process of adding announcements for the donations we have received. Donation response has been excellent, but we can always use more!

Wubba’s BBQ Shack is catering the food and will be pouring flights of their beers, and the spacious setting is strikingly beautiful. Our band expert, Bob Stark, found us an excellent band – Bridge 99. If that weren’t enough, Tracy is having the driveway repaved before our event to make Porsches and Horses a truly Porsche “friendly” event.

This is YOUR party!! We have a dedicated committee of about 10 members, and their hard work is making this festival happen, but we need your support by registering on MotorsportReg.com and by coming up with creative donations. If you would prefer, we also accept cash donations, but we need your participation at this special and very important event. Please show your support by registering early and coming out to have fun and support our charities.

Ferry Would be Proud

The new member Arrive and Drive BBQ early in August was a resounding success, but was especially notable for one additional reason. Many years ago, when Ferry Porsche came to the US as a guest of the Porsche Parade, he was asked to comment on the quality of the exceptional concours field. After a moment, he responded: “They are all

so beautiful, but we build Porsches to be driven,” and his comments have become a part of Porsche folklore around the world.

As I looked around the parking lot immediately before the arrive and drive on August 6, I noticed Brendon Gallaher’s 918 and smiled. Then I saw Dave and Maureen Vadman’s beautiful 968 that had just come from winning the preservation class at the Parade. The 968’s odometer clicked over the 120,000-mile mark on the drive. Porsches being driven — giving meaning to Ferry Porsche’s words.

Editor’s Notes By Patty Katz

At the August HDRPCA monthly dinner, I asked members to not be shy to submit their stories about their love of Porsches. The Zilks provided us with a marvelous story in our July newsletter about their first Porsche car, but also an additional gem about how the High Desert Region came to be. Now, we are a force to be reckoned with nationally due to our award-winning success at the National Porsche Parade in Spokane, Washington this past July. Any story you share is a way to “advertise” our club to past, current and future members. A newsletter is not an “archival” document. Its intent is to be a living breathing document of what we do as a club and remember it is on the web for everyone to read.

In addition to the importance of sharing stories (and articles) we include in the newsletter, be involved in HDRPCA. After we attended a few dinners, Jerry asked if anyone had an interest in becoming a newsletter editor. With my previous experience I thought that’s a way to be involved that’s comfortable for me – and here I am! And my husband Jeff loves attending the tech meetings. The only way to get information about those tech events is to be a part of the HDRPCA. Your involvement can be as simple as participating in one of the events, leading an event or even suggesting some new event others may enjoy! Regardless, being involved helps to directly or indirectly promote HDR to future members.

Earlier in August, I walked by a man who was getting into his Macan parked on the street after visiting the downtown farmers market. I asked him if he liked his car and he said that he loved it! I told him we had one and loved it as well. He immediately shared with me how he had upgraded his tires and wheels to high-performance. (Evidently that short interlude sparked something in him to share tech information!) I asked him if he knew we had a Porsche club and had monthly dinners at Kendall Porsche. He said no and then said, “it’s not my thing.” I told him he should check it out as we are all likeminded Porsche lovers. After that conversation, I left him alone. Even that small (and very brief) exchange between strangers hopefully sparked an interest in him to check us out. That, for me, was a friendly, harmless way of being involved.

Lastly, Jeff and I love to GTS – or Google That Story, Stuff or whatever word you insert. We are always looking at other news, articles and bits of information that pique our interests. I encourage you to “GTS” other Porsche websites. If you see we are missing something cool that could be included in our newsletter, let us know!! And, be involved whatever meets your comfort level!

Have a safe and fun September!

What’s My Car Worth? Tech Session: October 14 By Tim Hagner

On Saturday, October 14, 2017 High Desert Region will be hosting a special Tech Session at German Master Tech at 9:30 am. If you attended the Porsche Parade this year and went to some of the tech sessions you would have heard Nathan Merz speaking. His topics included, how to use the Hagerty price guide and how to determine your car’s condition, 1 through 4. Other topics included: Porsche market overview and analysis, what Porsches are hot in the market and what’s not so hot and a preview of what’s going to be hot (maybe). He will be presenting a similar session for us. We will also have several static Porsches on display so Nathan can walk us through the condition/value process. Everyone I talked to who attended his session at the Parade was glad they did. Nathan has a wealth of knowledge and Porsche insight. Nathan Merz is a lifelong car fanatic and has been especially passionate about Porsche since acquiring his first 911 at age 16. Over the past 25 years he has owned every iteration of Porsche and has a particular passion for the rear engine, air-cooled models. Ten years ago, he combined his interests, passion and skills and founded Columbia Valley Luxury Cars with the vision of sharing his passion and expertise with other like-minded enthusiasts. Nathan is a teacher at heart and views his jobs helping his customers fully understand not just the cars, but the Porsche culture, history and market. On a personal level, he is an avid collector of all original cars, parts and literature. You can also find him presenting his Porsches at both local and national level Concours events.

Yachats 2017: More Than We Bargained For

Story by Max and Penny Clausen Photographs by Roger Sanders

At a reasonable 8:30 AM assembly time, an eager flight of Porsche pushers and navigators gathered at Tetherow for a pre-briefing and drivers meeting on Friday morning. The 17 Porsches were split into two groups that departed ten minutes apart traveling south west on the Cascade Lakes Highway to Crescent, enjoying the first leg through some of the most scenic Cascade mountain vistas. The road was a wide-open “drivers” highway with few other travelers to deal with. A rest stop (a one-holer) at Crescent then another split departure traveling west to Oakridge where the Porsches filled "Stewart's 58 Drive-in" parking lot where we ordered and enjoyed an old fashioned drive-in lunch. Many in our group chose to split the huge hamburgers and other generous sandwiches like BLT with avocado, etc, etc. No one left hungry!

The first "special" side tour was to drive the Aufderheide scenic highway from Westfir to McKenzie Bridge, along an almost unspoiled 60-mile passage through some of Oregon's old growth forests on a mostly deserted road. Talk about a scenic drive! The roadway was not so well suited to spirited driving in Chron Sport Mode due to the frequent noticeable bumps but was quite sporting even without sport mode. This was a great "sports car" road. Ah well, the best-organized plans sometimes experience a

surprise. About 20-minutes from the end of the Aufderheide we were stopped by a forest ranger with a road-closed sign who said: “The road is on a soft closure and you can continue if you desire. I am just making you aware of the conditions ahead that are due to the new "Rebel" forest fire burning along the route, and you may not be able to travel to your planned destination at McKenzie Bridge."

We decided to go forward anyway. A handful of miles after the second group proceeded on we learned that an armed forest ranger turned the first group back 12-miles from the finish because burning trees had fallen into the roadway ahead! We all turned around and drove the route back to a covered bridge park near Westfir to rethink our route to Eugene. This was accomplished without further unplanned events. Cocktails and dinner at the Valley River Inn accompanied great conversation about the adventure and discussion of the large forest fires burning many square miles of timberland and wilderness in the Oregon western cascade forests.

Saturday, we sent the two groups off on the drive to the coast and Yachats. We travelled lesser-known sports car roads across the Willamette Valley and through the Coast Range mountains on twisty well-maintained Highways. Let me repeat for clarity: twisty smooth sports car highways. These roads were fun to drive, requiring attention to the task, no sightseeing for the drivers on quality roads. We had a date with the owner of the "Luna Sea Fish House" in Yachats for lunch Saturday. The parking lot was blocked off for us and we parked all 17 Porsches in the lot like some sort of a Chinese puzzle. They just fit! The owner catches his own fish and again it was a special feast for all. We also enjoyed live music by "Dave and Crate" who entertained us with oldies from the 50s to the 70s. We then spread out through

the area until reconvening between 5 and 6 for cocktails and an excellent dinner at "The Adobe Resort". Dinner provided an outstanding social wrap for a great day of driving our Porsches as they are meant to be driven and enjoyed. Thank yous were extended to all four of the Stark-Heyward organizers.

Sunday, we avoided a structured day by finding the best brunch each of us wanted. Then some drove back home individually or in smaller groups along one of the main routes back to our central Oregon homes.

New Members Arrive and Drive and BBQ August 5, 2017

Story by: Sam Davis Photographs: Roger Sanders On August 5, 2017, HDRPCA held the first annual New Members Arrive and Drive and BBQ at the home of Peter and Prudence Hammett in beautiful Tumalo. The BBQ was free to members (and guests) who had joined the HDRPCA since January 1, 2016. The only requirement for new members to qualify for the free BBQ was to sign up and participate in the Arrive and Drive that morning. All others were asked to contribute $17.95/person.

The Arrive and Drive was one of our best driving events, with 48 cars participating. One of the highlights was Brendan Gallaher and his Porsche 918 joining us for part of the drive. We wandered through the back roads and farm/ranch areas of Tumalo, Brasada Ranch, Terrebonne, Crooked River, and Prineville, before returning to the Hammett’s residence in Tumalo.

While we have driven many of these roads in previous drives, this was an exceptionally beautiful and relaxing day in the country. Thank you to Roger Sanders for developing this truly special drive.

Our BBQ, catered by Wubba’s BBQ Shack, was food that event planners had “tested” many times and found outstanding. The lunch, enjoyed by 66 members, included tender and juicy sliced tri-tip, pulled pork, and chopped chicken, served with potato salad, and BBQ beans. Beer, soft drinks and water were included.

Special thanks to our gracious hosts, Peter and Prudence, for opening their beautiful Spanish home in Tumalo to the members of our club. Surrounded by lush green pastures and stunning vistas, it was the centerpiece of the event. We were graced with a clear blue sky that allowed all to enjoy beautiful views of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top and the Three Sisters.

The highlight of the event was getting to know many of the new members, and the lively discussions we had with both new and old members. We hope we can repeat this type of event many times in the future.
