HDR Leadership The High Desert Region is a private not-for profit organization organized under the laws of the state of Oregon. The Club was chartered as a region in 2000, and is governed by an elected board of directors. The board of directors is ably assisted by committee chairs who are charged with specific functional responsibilities that help deliver a wide range of activities and events to the membership. All meetings of the board are open to the membership. Presidential Ramblings

April No Fools Day for the HDR was an absolutely beautiful day for an Arrive & Drive and, once again, Bob Stark did not disappoint, with a route that combined the Crooked River Canyon curves with a selection of roads West of Redmond and Northwest of Bend. Over forty cars made the drive and we ended the tour at Awbrey Glen’s restaurant, Nineteen, with an excellent lunch.

The second weekend of April brought the Spring edition of our Adopt a Road efforts. John and Eleanor Donohue did their usual outstanding job of hosting this event and report on the cleanup elsewhere in this issue of Downshift. On a side note, as Gretchen and I walked the site on the blustery, cold Friday before cleanup day “salting” a few cash prizes for the event, she came upon an unexpected find — $61 in neatly folded, but weathered bills!

The Spring and Fall road cleanups two of the most fun activities that we do as a club. It is amazing how much trash ends up on the side of the road! We laugh and joke about what we find, but I think each of us goes home with a greater appreciation of the impact of trash. The lesson this session was a renewed dislike of Styrofoam peanuts used for packing! In any event, please join us for the Fall cleanup in October.

The Porsche spirit that we saw with the first Arrive & Drive of 2017 carried over to the member dinner on April 19, where we had a record number of attendees on hand to join in the celebrations as we presented the COCC Automotive Technology program with our donation of $3,600 toward their scholarship program. My thanks go out to all of our members, as it is your participation and generosity that make our efforts to support our community possible.

Please note that the limited space and large number of members attending the dinners make it imperative that we all register as early as possible on MotorsportReg.com. We are now listing events well before they occur to facilitate early registrations. HDR is committed to keeping the dinners open to all who wish to attend, but we need your help in continuing this tradition.

We have begun to collect stuffed animals for local police and fire departments at our

monthly dinners and I am happy to report that the first month’s efforts, on very short notice, yielded 31 cute cuddly characters! The job of being your president takes a lot of work, but it is times like this that make it all worthwhile and I am very proud to lead this group of wonderful,

caring people. We will continue the stuffed animal drive at each member dinner throughout the summer, and will present the fruits of this effort to the various first responder organizations in the fall.

The day dawned cold for the Diego’s Car Show on Saturday, April 22, but warmed up nicely by afternoon. Once again Bob and Suzi Townes hit one out of the park and we had 44 HDR Porsches in attendance, against a total Corvette entry of “only” 39. The Townes’ write-up is featured later in this newsletter and they will be presenting the Car Club Trophy at our May member dinner. Congratulations to all who attended.

The annual Diego’s Car Show has become a fun way to kick off our show and shine activities each year and also gives us the opportunity to rub shoulders with other car nuts. With over 400 entries, Diego’s has grown into a large event by any standards.

On a personal note, HDR member Rob Altvatter had his beautiful red 2000 911 C2 at the show with a for-sale sign in the window and we were able to connect him with our friends Dewey and Bonnie Davidson. Dewey was a founder of the Cascade Region (1961) and also the Sierra Nevada Region in Zone 7 (1965), but has been away from Porsche for many years. Please join in welcoming the Davidsons “home”. Rob also has an 83 911SC in his garage so this is a net gain in our membership as well.

Finally, you will begin to see changes in Downshift over the next several months. First, we will be welcoming Patty Katz as our new editor. Patty has extensive experience editing material for websites and I look forward to having her help on Downshift. Second, I volunteered to review newsletters for the PCA newsletter contest. The group I reviewed included ten of the larger regions in the country and involved reading over 700 pages of newsletter material! The PCA review is pretty structured and I now know what they are looking for in a newsletter — boy do I know! Seriously, the best stood out from the rest, and although there are some aspects that we cannot expect to replicate, we can make our newsletter a much better vehicle for keeping the HDR membership informed. A few of the changes are found in this issue, but stay tuned . . .

News Flash — Check out Pete’s article in this month’s Panorama on the 2016 Oregon Festival of Cars/Porsches on the High Desert. Very nice work Pete!

Semi Annual Adopt-a-Road Cleanup John and Eleanor Donohue Photos by John Donohue

Our dedicated group of volunteers met on this brisk Saturday morning in early April to complete our semi annual ODOT cleanup commitment. With the threatening snow and rain just staying at bay for our group, we were thrilled to get such a terrific turnout of twenty people. Our group met at the traditional Highway 20 location, about ten miles south of Sisters.

Richard’s donuts and fresh brewed Starbucks coffee fueled our group. We felt badly that we ran out of donuts towards the end of the morning and will keep this in mind for our next event. Our terrific group headed out to collect roadside trash and debris, filling the bright yellow ODOT bags. Once again, "trash" prizes were on the line, along with Jerry's hidden cash prizes. It is interesting to note, when Jerry and his wife Gretchen were planting their cash prizes totaling $20.00 dollars, they found a folded group of bills totaling $61.00. Who knew that the High Desert Region presidency was a money

maker. Congratulations Jerry and Gretchen!!

Page 7: Downshift - High Desert PCA...Downshift High Desert Region — Porsche Club of America® May 2017 Vol. 5-2017 Porsches on the 18th Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors2016 Photo J.Kolb

The winning prize for the "heaviest bag of trash" was too close to call. Congratulations to both Paul Vallerga and Kerry Madsen for their shared victory. Congratulations also to Pete Olson for finding the little stuffed lamb, which won the prize for the "most unusual/unique item found." The variety of seven different cash prize bills hidden by Jerry and Gretchen were located. One prize required a little "directing" from Gretchen, but we can say this year that no cash was left on the field. Thank you all for your diligence!!

About half of our group returned in a timely manner but the others were no-where to be seen. We decided that a search and rescue team was needed to find the "lost souls." The wayward group was located, with mounting debris and in need of ODOT bags. That is why we have separate group #1 and group #2 pictures. Congratulations to one and all for a very successful morning.

We look forward to having you join our group for the next cleanup Saturday in the Fall of 2017. It is a fun, social and relaxed time when we do something worthwhile for our beautiful community. Our club continues to be dedicated to this semi annual obligation and its desire to assist in keeping our Central Oregon highways green and clean.

With our sincere and heartfelt thanks to our amazing Saturday morning group. Your efforts and commitment on such a brisk morning were greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you next time. John and Eleanor Donohue

Diego's 9th Annual Spring Fling Car Show 2017 Bob and Suzi Townes Photos by Roger Mathus

On Saturday April 22nd lots of Porsches attended the 9th annual Diego's car show! In fact, the HDR entry earned the club the trophy for having the most cars in its fourth year attending the Diego's show. Most importantly, the HDR turn out, on what proved to be a very nice sunny 65-degree Spring day, beat down the Corvette club, which could only muster 39 cars! Thanks to everyone for a great turnout, and for giving HDR the trophy for a third year in a row.

Porsches were judged and awarded trophies in two classes, and HDR members won awards in both categories. First place in air-cooled went to Pete Olson for his 1958 Porsche “Junior” Diesel Tractor and second place went to Paul Vallerga for his beautiful 1960 Porsche 356 Roadster.

The second category was for water cooled Porsches. First place went to Ray Guardado for his exceptional 1987 Porsche 928. Second place was awarded to Roger Mathus with his striking brown 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S. Hearty congrats to all.

A special thanks to our two trophy sponsors this year Kendall Porsche of Bend and Central Oregon Insurance. High Desert Region sponsored two trophies for the Mustangs. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Diego’s in sponsoring this great Central Oregon event, and the City of Redmond for providing the venue. As large as our entry was at 44 cars, it made up just over 10% of the total entry!

We want to thank all who helped make this event successful for HDR, particularly Alan Fuller, Mark McConnell and Rob Kutz for their help leading the three early morning convoys to the car show. Also a special shout out is due to Tim Hagner and Mike Simmons for their early morning help with the event parking challenge. Thinking ahead to 2018, we are going to need more room — both sides of one block, with an additional row of cars up the center, will only accommodate 44 cars!

Hill Country Treffen -March 2017 Pete Olson

Well… I grabbed the opportunity to attend the National PCA Treffen held in Austin,Texas on March 30th – April 1st.

Treffen Hill Country Logo

A bit about Treffens, first of all Treffen is German for gathering, and this is the second one which National PCA has held. The first one was at Squaw Valley California last September. A Treffen is a three day event, scaled down from the week long Porsche Parade which is held once a year.

The other factor is that the Treffens are scheduled in different parts of the country to provide opportunities for more club members to attend a national event. The 2016 Porsche Parade was held at Jay Peak, Vermont and attracted mainly East Coast members. Consequently, the California & Texas locations provided an opportunity for the west coast and southern US members to more easily attend.

Now…my quick check showed that it is 2000 miles one way from Bend to Austin, so that in my mind ruled out driving. Although it would have been nice to have a Porsche there for

the drives, I had friends which I met at previous National events to catch a ride with while I was there, plus also was able to ride with a new friend who had a spare seat.

The Treffen was headquartered at the Lost Pines Resort, Bastrop Texas with golfing, hiking, horseback riding etc…

LostPinesResortBarstrop,Texas

The first evening was a drive to The Course of America in Austin. The track was open to Porsches, two laps at a time with repeat laps if you were willing to wait in line to get back on the track… most drivers did.

Course of America Austin, Texas

Next day there was the drive to the Texas hill country, a real treat motoring through the rolling hills outside Austin. This was larger scale version of our Arrive & Drives, with the usual rest stop.

There were Texas longhorns grazing along the way, and places where the road dropped down to a creek bed where the creek could rise four or five feet during a downpour. There were signs marked in one-foot increments to let you know how deep the water was on the road. Our final stop was at the Trattoria Lisina Winery for wine tasting and a wonderful lunch.

Lunch at the Trattoria Lisina Winery

The grand finale was the Texas BBQ complete with a Texas two step band and a long horned steer for photo ops. There were also door prize drawings, and I was fortunate enough to win a Bose bluetooth headset!

Now it’s time to look forward to the Porsche Parade in Spokane and the September 2017 Treffen in Ashville, North Carolina!
