HD Surveillance: Fantasy or Reality?• Current Challenges:
– The cost for large scale surveillance system would increase dramatically if using megapixel technology (compared to regular surveillance systems)
– The networking infrastructure between different systems is very complicated given the amount of data flow, latency, etc.
– Difficult to encode and decode in real-time with large scale megapixel technology deployment
– Difficult to expand the system– High management and maintenance
cost– Lack of know-how
• Integrated networking video surveillance system
• Simplified large-scale video surveillance system
• Real-time video surveillance system• Shows super high clarity and details• Centralized data storage and management• Video analytics• Open protocol and interface

HD IP Camera + Storage
• The mainstream of the industry is still using CIF and 4CIF resolution
• The current video surveillance system is mainly used for event recording. Details of the event, however, are not “detailed” enough yet.
• The bottleneck was in technical development and market adoption.
Current Status of Video Surveillance
Is it $80K or $90K?
Who is this guy?
• Wider coverage per camera = less cameras on-site
Regular Camera
HD Camera
Advantage of HD Surveillance
An Ideal HD Surveillance System• Video Input: With HD IP camera,
HD digital camera, or HD encoder
• Management Platform: Supports centralized/distributed HD video stream and management command
• Storage: Supports storage and retrieval of HD video data
• Decoding and Video Output: Directly process HD video data for output
• Video Display: HD display• Other Application: Such as
video analytics – higher resolution brings higher accuracy for video analytics
• HD Transmission: Supports HD video transmission. Transmit uncompressed video stream can also be considered in order to lower the latency.
Everything HD
Case Study: HD Surveillance System• Location:
– Shanghai Pudong, where World Expo 2010 are being held in.– Total visitor :6,528,460,000 (up to Jun. 9)
• Objective: – Establish a comprehensive high-definition surveillance system in
order to monitor the Expo closely and discover criminal activities in real-time.
System Requirement
• Wide Coverage– Covering 42 police stations, 6 sub-monitoring
stations, and 1 central monitoring station in Pudong, Shanghai.
– Over 12,000 surveillance spots.
• Advance– Using the latest surveillance technology,
products and infrastructure to achieve high security requirement.
• Extendable– Need to be able to extend for the future
requirement.
• Easy to Manage– All the sub systems need to be centrally
managed.
Why HD?
• Wider Coverage– In order to have a wider coverage, you need to have hundreds or
thousands of VGA cameras in place.– The information in one single HD camera equals to several VGA
cameras.
Why HD?
• ePTZ– Apart from the increased clarity of the image, HD camera also has
ePTZ function for user to track or zoom in the targeted object in order to get the details.
• Identification– Provide details for license plate, driver and passenger in vehicles,
etc.

Success in Large Scale Deployment• Has money• Has clear ideas about what they want and what they
like to achieve• Think big and long
HIKVISION overview
