Over the past three weeks, children throughout the school
have been assessed in their learning, teachers have
submitted this data and senior leaders have posed questions
for teachers to establish what has contributed the most to
children making progress or what is a potential barrier to
progress. Over the next two weeks we will be holding pupil
progress meetings with teachers where individual children
and their progress will be discussed and where needed,
actions put in place.
Children make the most progress where school and home
work together, please help us to help your child by:
Ensuring that they come to school regularly and on time
Reading at home with your child every day and once at
the weekend
Supporting your child to learn their spellings every week
Talking to your child/children about their day as being
able to relay the learning helps to consolidate it
Ask your child what they have learned during the day,
this is different to what they have done; for example,
they might have been doing subtraction in maths but
they have learned how apply their knowledge of place
value to exchange.
Before Christmas, you will receive a mini report informing
you of where your son/daughter is working at and the
progress they have made so far this year.
Now the weather has taken a turn, please ensure children
are warmly dressed for playtimes and lunchtimes. Please
label any hats and gloves so that if misplaced they can be
returned to their owner!
Curriculum Update – Road Safety
Year 1 had a great time learning about how to be safe on the roads. They started by listening to the cartoon
hedgehogs teach them how to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE! This helped make them ‘The King of the Road!’ The children
used road safety equipment to act out how to cross the road safely on: a zebra crossing, a pelican crossing and with
a lollipop person. They then learned the slogan: Be Bright, Be Seen and played some games online. Finally, they
went on to design a bright top for Mo Farah’s late night runs, making sure that he could be seen by traffic!
Year Two have had a great week learning all about Road Safety. They took part in Miss Latham’s assembly, learning
how to cross the road safely in a safe place. In their classrooms, they consolidated this learning by making leaflets
on the Green Cross Code, writing instructions on how to cross the road safely and making posters with pictures.
They are now all very aware the Green Cross Code and have been spreading the word in KS1!
This week, Year 3 talked about the green cross code and how to cross the road safely. They learnt about road signs and how we use them to keep us safe whilst on the roads. The children all designed their own, child friendly road sign, which they thought would be useful for other children to use.
In Year 4, the children had a lovely afternoon taking part in Road Safety activities. They were able to discuss how to
use the road safely by different means as well as to spot hazards in different road safety pictures. The children were
also able to share stories they had relating to this topic as well as engage in role-playing different scenarios. For
their tasks, the children were able to create road safety posters while others were able to write an acrostic poem
based on what they have learnt about the topic.
In Year 5, the children took part in numerous different activities to promote road safety. Some children took part in role-plays where they were able to perform to the rest of the class the correct strategy when approaching a road crossing. Some children actually recorded their own adverts where they shared important knowledge with their viewers. Other children were able to create storyboards where their characters showed the best ways to cross a road.
This week in Year 6, pupils have considered the importance of road safety using resources from the charity known
as Brake. Brake aims to support schools, communities and other organisations in raising awareness of the risks and
rules of the road. At De Lucy School we take this subject very seriously and regularly remind children about road
safety, not just in Road Safety Week, but all the time. Each year there is a new theme for Road Safety Week; this
year the theme is ‘Bike Smart’. We encourage children to ride their bikes to school, but want them to always be
safe. Pupils thought about clothing and helmets to improve the safety of cyclists. They researched materials and
colours and then designed their own cycle helmet. They also wrote a set of instructions on how to cross the road
safely, which will be displayed around the school.
THE ‘PUPIL PREMIUM’: SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL BY APPLYING FOR
FREE SCHOOL MEALS
Please take up your entitlement to Free School
Meals if you have not done so already. It will
greatly help to improve the funding the school
receives and therefore the amount we can
spend on improving all kinds of resources and
opportunities for our children. The forms are
available in the school office.
Requests for spare PE kits As a school we ask that all children are provided with a
PE kit to enable them to take part in PE lessons every
week.
Although we ask this, not all children have PE kits. The
school has spent hundreds of pounds stocking spare kit
so that children do not miss out and would appreciate
any donations of any PE kit which your children no longer
use.
We would be particularly grateful for any donations
trainers/plimsolls in sizes 1-7.
Thank you, Mr Lado
Curriculum Update
Christmas Crafts - Reminder
Christmas Crafts will be held on Thursday 6th December £1.50,
deadline is 29th November 2018
This week in Reception we have been busy learning our new story of 'The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud'. We have even begun to draw our own story maps to help us retell!
The children in the Nursery have had a fantastic week finding out about how the postmen and postwomen help them by delivering their mail; especially birthday cards and parcels! They designed several bags for them to use whilst delivering the mail.
Extra-Curricular Clubs
De Lucy pupils made good use of Cookhill Road this week as part of their work on Road Safety. Mr Ashmore carried
out his early morning football club on the road during closure times. The children thoroughly enjoyed the
experience.

Packed lunches ideas
Please see link below for healthier lunchbox ideas. https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes
If you would like to provide you child with a hot pack lunch please ensure that the flask is double walled for thermal
insulation to keep the temperate inside constant for as long as it can, it is also cool to touch and condensation free
on the outside.
When a child arrives late at school, they miss important events like assembly, teacher’s instructions and introductions. Children also feel embarrassed at having to enter the classroom late.
How does it impact on my child’s learning?
Lateness has a negative impact. Being late can:
Disrupt lessons
Affect achievement
Embarrass/upset your child
Effect of late arrival
Minutes late per day
Lost days of teaching in 1 year
Number of
weeks missed
5 mins 3 days -
10 mins 6.5 days 1 week 1 ½ day
15 mins 10 days 2 weeks
20 mins 13 days 2 weeks 3 days
30 mins 19 days 3 weeks 4 days
The table above indicates how frequent lateness can add
up to a considerable amount of lost learning. This can
seriously disadvantage children and disrupt the learning
of others.
Our aim is for our children to achieve 95% and the
whole school to achieve attendance above 96%
