Launched in 2012, it was developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, a nonprofit organization founded by a group of fashion companies, the United States governmentEnvironmental Protection Agency, and other nonprofit entities.HIGG INDEXThe Higg Index provides a tool for the apparel and footwear industry to assess sustainability throughout a product's entire life cycle, from materials to end-of-life.

The metrics created Higg Index are limited to a company's internal use for the evaluation and improvement of environmental performance.

Plans for a future version include the creation of a scoring scale designed to communicate a product's sustainability impact to consumers and other stakeholdersHIGG INDEXHIGGS INDEX 1.0

HIGGS INDEX 2.0

VERSIONS:Version 1.0 of the Higg Index was made public in July 2012.

According to the Coalition's Executive Director, Jason Kibbey, the name "Higg" was inspired by theHiggs Bosonsearch. The name Higg also met other key criteria: it was short, easy to pronounce and was able to clear trademark registration in 120 countries.

In its first iteration, Higg Index metrics focus on environmental factorsin the apparelsupply chain. Version 1.0On 11 December 2013, an updated version of the Higgs Index was released.

The Higg Index 2.0 is a suite of sustainability assessment tools that anyone can get started with right away.

These assessments, called modules, evaluate impacts through our three different lenses: Facility, Brand, and Product.HIGGS INDEX 2.0The Higg Index 2.0 is primarily anindicatorbased assessment toolfor appareland footwear products.

The Index asks practice-based, qualitative questions to gauge environmental sustainability performance and drive behavior for improvement.

It is based largely on theEco Index,Nikes Apparel Environmental Design Tool,Global Social Compliance Program (GSCP) reference tools, and Social/Labor Best Practice Tools (e.g.,SAI Social Fingerprint,FLA Sustainable Compliance Initiative, etc.),The Higg Index 2.0 is a tool to help organizations standardize how they measure and evaluate environmental performance of apparel products across the supply chain at the brand, product, and facility levels. It is:

a self-assessment tool that enables rapid learning through identification of environmental sustainability hot spots and improvement opportunities;a starting point of engagement, education, and collaboration among stakeholders in advance of more rigorous assessment efforts.
