Allowing your child to use Facebook is a big decision, as is the age you allow them to join. Facebook rules state you need to be 13 years old to have a Facebook page although many parents allow their children to break those rules. I have a teenage daughter and, as I work in the medium every day, I was apprehensive about setting her free on the network, so I set some rules in place so she can join her friends online. Facebook is a luxury in our house. It isn’t something we let our daughter go on every day and we have some pretty tight rules around accessing and using it. Think about putting restrictions in place, such as only letting your child go on Facebook after homework and chores have been completed. An important thing for all parents with younger children who are on Facebook to consider is access to the child’s account. Having the password allows parents to check the account as and when they please, to make sure a child is abiding by the rules and check the content that he or she is posting and sharing. The biggest, and sometimes most scary, part about Facebook is you cannot control what your child sees, what their friends comment on and like. Therefore it is important to make sure that you know who her friends are and the pages she follows. It can be hard going, when she shares hundreds of Taylor Swift posts or images of the actor who is the flavour of the month. With older children, parents may prefer a more hands-off approach, but ensure they make it clear they want to discuss any issues that come up. Talking to your children about appropriate behaviour online is also very important. We had lengthy discussions about people’s privacy and, as many teenagers have smart phones, taking photos of friends and posting them without their permission is a big no-no in our house. Parents should make it clear that children need to get permission from the subject, before they post photos of people online. This is a safeguard not only for your child, but also her friends. Attention needed to keep children safe on social media Bullying is another big online issue. Sitting down and talking to your children about the different types of bullying is very important. Comments made on Facebook can be a skewed in so many different ways, so talking to your children about re-reading their comments before posting is key. I am sure we have all made a comment on something and then re-read it only to realise it may easily be misconstrued. Remember it is also okay for your child not to follow all family members on Facebook. My daughter doesn’t follow everyone, as I feel if she wants to chat to her family she needs to pick up the phone. Mostly kids want to talk to each other and have fun. Try not to take a too hard-line approach. Social media is a big part of our lives, but as with everything else in life, if we apply reasonable rules, monitor our kids and trust them to be honest, then it will be an enjoyable experience all around. It’s hard to curl up with a Kindle in front of the fire, so how about seeking out a good read for Mum this Mother’s Day? Anne Pretorius from Never Ending Books in Orewa shares some of her favourite books with a mothering theme.

Books for mums

Hugs For Sons by Debbie WebbBoys are the joy and bane of a mother’s life. They can turn on that smile and get themselves out of a sticky patch with Mum anytime they like, and frequently do. But all too often we get bogged down in the sticky stuff and they don’t bother with that smile – Hugs For Sons reminds us of how much we love those men of tomorrow and how much they need us to do just that. I laughed and I cried.

The Hip Mama Survival Guide by Ariel GoreThe cover says it all – advice from the trenches on pregnancy, childbirth, cool names, clueless doctors, potty training, toddler avengers, domestic mayhem and way more, for example coming up with the funds to buy the pressies at Christmas, when your husband’s out of work, and you’re the way he likes you – barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. Actually – a great way for an overworked Mum to notice the silver linings in a cloudy life.

In The Kitchen With Miss Piggy By Moi (that’s herself)A lovely little cookbook filled with fabulous recipes from Miss Piggy’s Famous Celebrity Friends – the superlatives are all Miss Piggy’s. But it’s a magic little book and, being a Paul Newman fan, I am delighted to find that he likesThai food and has provided the recipe for Tasty Thai Shrimp and Sesame Noodles. Miss Piggy, however, loves him for his popcorn – what a gal.

Alison’s Diary – The Nappy Years by Alison CraigMothers will thoroughly enjoy reading about some else’s fun and games during pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. You’ve been there – got that Tee Shirt and certainly never thought there was enough of that period that was funny enough to write home about – now did you?

Cuisine with Dame Alison Holst

This recipe from my Children’s Step by Step Fun-to-Cook Book (Hyndman Publishing) is a good one for even quite young children to make and serve for a Mother’s Day breakfast in bed. Supervision and assistance from an older family member is recommended as hot pans are involved. Mum will be impressed that something so delicious can be made from leftover bread. Truly a silk purse from a sow’s ear transformation!

For a single serving:1 large egg1 Tbsp milk1 tsp sugar (if you like)2 slices bread2 tsp butter for cooking (in ½ tsp pieces)Find a shallow bowl big enough to hold a slice of bread, lying flat. Break in the egg, add milk and sugar and beat with a fork or stirrer. Dip bread in mixture so each side is coated, then lie slices in a flat dish. Pour any leftover egg mixture on the bread, so it can soak it up. Warm pan on medium heat, drop in ½ teaspoon butter and swirl it around. When butter bubbles, before it browns, put in one slice of the bread. Turn when golden brown, after about a minute, and add a little more butter. If you like, grill some bacon and slice a banana while the French Toast cooks. Cut slices in half, if you like, and put on a plate with the bacon and banana. Serve warm with maple or golden syrup.

By Rodney MP Mark MitchellDo you want to know my first real memory of you, Mum? It was at the Whenuapai Air Force Base swimming pool. I’m not sure how old I was, but I was probably about two or three.I remember feeling safe because you were there and ready to react if I got into trouble. Years later you were still there, standing on the beach cheering me on when, I won my first Surf Lifesaving Award. When I left school and went shepherding, I looked forward to your care packages, which always contained

a pair of Norsewear socks and a packet of Black Knight liquorice. When I joined the Police, you called every week to make sure I was eating properly, getting regular exercise and wearing warm clothing on night shift. I would cop a bit of ribbing from my mates, but hey, you’re my Mum.On the campaign trail in 2011 there you were, manning the phones. Mum, I know I am responsible for that very rare and odd grey hair, but that unconditional love that only a mother provides has been there always, through all the highs and lows.

Sally Mitchell and her son’s Norsewear socks.

A tribute to a mother’s love

Lessons from our mothersThe lessons that our mothers taught us can stay with us for life. Hibiscus Matters asked local school principals what they learned at mum’s knee:Whangaparaoa College principal James Thomas: “Mum and Dad watched every sports game and every performance in which I and my eight sisters and brother were involved. When I was a young teacher, Dean and Head of Department I remember telling mum how busy things were. Mum passed on wisdom she learned from the late Cardinal Delargey: I used to complain that my job was always being interrupted, and then I realised that the interruptions were my job.”Red Beach School principal Julie Hepburn: “My mother taught me many things, but basically it all boiled down to this : always look on the bright side of life and see the best in everyone.”Orewa North Primary Principal Bruce Laws: “My mum constantly reminded me to always respect others and remember those manners such as please, thank you and personal greetings. She also taught me that little is achieved without hard work and putting in a good effort.”
