MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY UNIT STUDYWhile this unit study is intended for 1st ndash 5th grades some of the exercises could easily be tailored for younger children I have also added some ideas in some of the subjects to use with older children

This unit encompasses a variety of daily subjects including Math Science Language Arts Social StudiesGeography and Visual Arts In addition to the printables you will need a dictionary access to the internet a US AtlasMap (for reference) crayons construction paper scissors glue and peach brown finger paints

Language ArtsHistory1 Have students read the History of Martin Luther King Jr (Handout A)2 After reading have the student(s) define the vocabulary words and answer the questions on Worksheet A3 Use the ldquoI Have a Dreamhelliprdquo writing prompt for older students or allow younger students to dictate to you what they would

Visual Arts1 Handprint Art ldquoMy Dreamrdquo Put their ldquoI Have a Dreamrdquo paper inside2 Handprint Peace Flower3 Take different varieties of apples and cut them right to left (versus from top to bottom) Show the students how the outside

skins might all be slightly different but the inside is all the same What do they have in common when you open them up Then point out that each one has a ldquostarrdquo in the middle For added fun use the cut apples and paint to make apple print art with the saying ldquoNot the color of our skin but the content of our characterrdquo written at the topbottom

The History of Martin Luther King Jr

Martin Luther King Jr was born January 15 1929 in Atlanta Georgia He was the second son of Martin Luther King Sr and Alberta Williams King He along with his older sister and younger brother grew up in Atlantarsquos sweet Auburn neighborhood His father was a pastor and his mother was a former school teacher Martin Luther King Jr or MLK for short was a very gifted student and admitted to Morehouse College at the age of 15 and studied medicine and law He had no intention of following in his fatherrsquos footsteps of ministry until one day the Morehouse Presidentrsquos mentorship inspired him to change professions

King completed his education at Morehouse in 1948 and then entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania While at Crozer he earned a Bachelor of Divinity won a prestigious fellowship and was elected president of his majority white senior class Later he earned a Doctorate in Systematic Theology in 1955 from Boston University

While in Boston he met and married his wife Coretta Scott in 1953 After he completed his studies at Boston University they moved to Montgomery Alabama where he became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church They had 4 children ndash 2 girls and 2 boys

Martin Luther King Jr soon became passionate about civil rights and equality for African-Americans the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice In addition to pastor-ing his church he sought equality for these groups through peaceful protest His part in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington were pivotal in bringing about landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 Because of his influence of peace he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964

Even though Kingrsquos protests were peaceful in nature he still found much opposition This opposition led to his assassination the night of April 14 1968 on the balcony of his motel in Memphis Tennessee

Martin Luther King Jr Day did not become a federal holiday until 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday in honor of King It took years of campaigning by activists members of Congress and his widow Coretta Scott King before the holiday created It was celebrated for the first time on the 3rd Monday of January 1986 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act

King completed his education at Morehouse in 1948 and then entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania While at Crozer he earned a Bachelor of Divinity won a prestigious fellowship and was elected president of his majority white senior class Later he earned a Doctorate in Systematic Theology in 1955 from Boston University

While in Boston he met and married his wife Coretta Scott in 1953 After he completed his studies at Boston University they moved to Montgomery Alabama where he became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church They had 4 children ndash 2 girls and 2 boys

Martin Luther King Jr soon became passionate about civil rights and equality for African-Americans the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice In addition to pastor-ing his church he sought equality for these groups through peaceful protest His part in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington were pivotal in bringing about landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 Because of his influence of peace he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964

Even though Kingrsquos protests were peaceful in nature he still found much opposition This opposition led to his assassination the night of April 14 1968 on the balcony of his motel in Memphis Tennessee

Martin Luther King Jr Day did not become a federal holiday until 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday in honor of King It took years of campaigning by activists members of Congress and his widow Coretta Scott King before the holiday created It was celebrated for the first time on the 3rd Monday of January 1986 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act
