National News affecting our Classmates . . .

COLORADO WILDFIRES, a scary sight from Colorado Springs

I read one article where a resident interviewed said “it’s like living thru a horror

movie!”

After getting the phone call from Garry Garrison saying they had beenevacuated from their home in Cascade, Co, and were in a motel in Colorado

Springs, I spent the rest of the week keeping up on the news through “Southern

Colorado’s #1 TV Web Channel” kk tv.com and waiting for another call from Garry… hopefully with GOOD news.  Here’s the map I got from www.geomac.gov indicating the fires were entirely too close to Cascade!

I was so relieved to get the call onMonday, a week later, saying they

were back in their house and

found no apparent damage done;

not even the smell of smoke inside!

All our prayers were answered

Here’s a short report from Garry:

GOOD TO BE HOME. SAT AFTERNOON, JUN 23rd, WE WON'T FORGET FOR A WHILE. THE WALDOCANYON FIRE STARTED NO MORE THAN 2 RIDGE LINES FROM OUR HOUSE AND THE SMOKE WASTREMENDOUS. WE STARTED GATHERING OUR BELONGINGS AND I TOTED THEM DOWN TO OURWALK OUT BASEMENT. I LOADED THE PICKUP AND BUICK WHILE PEGGY WAS STUFFING OURIMPORTANT PAPERS IN A FIRE PROOF SAFE. OUR FINAL ACT WAS TO TAPE A NOTE ON OURFRONT DOOR, " GONE --- 3:45 ".

WE DECIDED TO SPEND THE NIGHT IN MANITOU SPRINGS, ABOUT 6 MILES DOWN THE PASS. AT

3 AM THERE WAS A KNOCK ON OUR MOTEL ROOM DOOR, "MANDATORY EVACUATION". THISREALLY GOT OUR ATTENTION. SO WE HASTILY REPACKED OUR STUFF AND HEADED EASTANOTHER 6 MILES AND SPENT THE NEXT 8 NIGHTS IN A MOTEL. TUE EVENING AS WE WEREWATCHING THE FIRE BRIEFING, THE FIRESTORM HIT THE WEST SIDE OF COLO SPGS. IT WASTERRIBLE. 345 HOMES LOST AND 2 PEOPLE DIED. BY WED WE WERE FAIRLY SURE OUR HOUSEHAD BEEN SPARED. SUN MORN THEY OPENED THE HIGHWAY UP THE PASS FOR THERESIDENTS. SHORTLY AFTER NOON WE DROVE INTO OUR DRIVEWAY. NOTHING WASDAMAGED, NOTHING. WENT INSIDE, SMELLED NO HINT OF SMOKE, CHECKED THE FRIDG ANDFREEZER, STILL COLD. (WE NEVER LOST POWER). OH THANK YOU, FIREFIGHTERS!! OH THANKYOU, LORD!!!!!

An update from our

“fearless leader”

Ed Heinlein

Friends,

Thank God Garry and Peggy are safe! I look forward to his report.

As I have been essentially house bound for most of the past couple of months, it probably

wouldn’t surprise you if I have nothing to report this month. Then again, it also probably

wouldn’t surprise you that having nothing to say won’t stop me from saying it! The major

loss over this time period was my inability to go to LS this year. Not only did I want tobe at the Class functions so I could get some well-needed hugs and long conversations,

but also, I missed the Golden. We did get out for a quick five day four night trip to our “happy place,” (remember the

old Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler?), Yosemite National Park. Bob and MarleseGourley came out and accompanied us on one of the best short vacations of all time.

Although I was pretty much sedentary (Bob even drove every mile of the trip), I was still

able to get around to see my favorite places in the world. Great weather, great scenery

(the Falls, while not completely full, were breathtakingly beautiful) ,excellent food andwine. The last night, spent at the Ahwahnee Hotel , our two rooms shared a 1500 square

foot balcony which had a marvelous view of the Upper Falls. We had cocktails there in

the evening and a large breakfast served there before leaving for the Bay Area.

The wildest thing happened 45 minutes after we got home. Vivian and I were in thebackyard and we heard a pistol shot from the direction of the front yard; we raced (think of Jabba the Hut from Star Wars rumbling through the garage) to the front. When we got

there, there was no shooter, no gun, no shell casings. Rather, the “gunshot” was a

blowout of the right front tire; a three sided flap had blown out of the right side wall. This, after Marlese had kept wondering why there were no guard rails on the

mountainous highways in Yosemite. Were we lucky?!

The Gourleys were the most recent of six couples Vivian and I have “introduced” to

Yosemite. Friends from Texas (if I can make it) will be the seventh; all have loved this

special place. So, come on out. We’d like for you to be the eighth…and the ninth…and

the tenth!I have had some time to do a little research while laid low. I was fascinated to learn of

the almost reverence in which the folks at the Peace Corps hold our Classmate, Paul

Coverdell. I will report on the research next time, together with an update of our plans to

make the Best of Class (1957, of course) sponsor the Best of Scholarships.

By the way, our now 21 year old Elly will be married in late August! Gad, how old can

we get? And they will spend part of their honeymoon at, you guessed it, the Wawona!

Fro m Sharon’s Kitchen . . .

Joyce (Johnson) Bailey gave me a bite of these bars and I swore off of those dry cardboardy

packaged bars for ever. These bars are a great breakfast bar or a nutritious afternoon pick-

me-up. Also try Marilyn’s Pina Colada Slush for a refreshing summer treat. Sharon

CHEWY GRANOLA BARS

2 cups quick-cooking oats, divided

1/3 to ½ cup unrefined cane or reg sugar

1 cup raw pecan halves½ cup unsweetened coconut chips

½ cup semi or bittersweet choc chips

¼ cup dried cherries

½ tsp. salt

1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

1/3 cup peanut butter

1 tsp vanilla extract6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

6 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp water

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly butter or spray with cooking spray an 8” square baking pan.

Cut a rectangle of parchment paper to line bottom and 2 sides of pan, leaving a littleoverhang. Press parchment into the dish and lightly grease the paper.

Put 1/3 cup of the oats in bowl of food processor and process until finely ground. In alarge bowl, stir remaining 1-2/3 cups oats, the ground oats, sugar, pecans, coconut chips,

chocolate chips, dried cherries, salt, and, if using, cinnamon.

In medium bowl, whisk together: peanut butter, vanilla extract, melted butter, honey and

water. Pour wet ingredients over dry ones and stir well until mixture is evenly moistened

Transfer to prepped pan, pressing mixture firmly to shape of pan (a piece of plastic wrap

helps the pressing — much less stickiness). Remove the plastic wrap after pressing down.Bake for about 30 mins (check at 25) until brown around the edges and the tops have a

hint of color. Mixture will still seem soft and almost under-baked but will set as it cools.

Transfer the pan to a rack and allow the bars to cool completely in the pan. If the bars

seem crumbly, refrigerate in the pan for 30 minutes to further set them. Run a knife

around the edges then pull up on the parchment paper to lift the sheet of bars out of the

pan. Cut into bars.

Wrap in plastic wrap or in an airtight container (layering between wax paper so they

don’t stick to one another. In hot weather— refrigerate them.

I was talking to Ed about getting more involvement from Classmates in the publication of our newsletter. We both think it would be interesting to hear short stories about fun

and/or interesting happenings in everyone’s working lives. Let us get to know better what

you’ve been doing between 1957 and now. We did put together our Class bio booklet, butthat only outlines where you lived, worked, family, etc. We want to hear more; stories like

Bill Turner has shared with us. So I’m inserting a new page in our Hi-Life II . . . I’ll startit off, but you guys and gals need to play follow the leader! (Remember how we did that?)

“Stories from the road of life”

As you can imagine, being married to Carl Williams for 53+ years and with his varied resume, I

do have a lot of stories to tell. It’s been interesting and adventuresome to say the least. But the

story that seems to be most suitable here is the fact that our Hi-Life II is not my first newsletter

to publish. At one point of time, Carl spent several years as Corporate Director of Safety,Training and Compliance for a hazardous waste disposal company (Patchem Inc, later called

Cemtech) based out of New Jersey, with several plants scattered from the Midwest to the East

Coast. They set up in cement plants to burn (dispose of) hazardous waste liquids in cement

kilns, replacing coal. Carl’s job was to train the employees in safe handling, see the plants ran

according to OSHA regulations, etc. His office was at home, since he spent most of his time

traveling. After one trip he came home saying he wanted to put together a Company Safety

Newsletter to put out to the employees of all the plants. This meant he’d get ME information so

I could put it together! As we worked on our first issue, we decided we needed a “spokesman”

figure … as Carl said “like Redi-kilowatt.” We were living in Rolla, MO at the time and found a

local artist looking for work. Carl described to him what we were looking for and he brought usseveral versions to choose from. Then we needed a name for this fella. An afternoon was spent

throwing out names. At the same time in our lives, Carl was studying with a gentleman in

Masonic work by the name of Wilburn Sanders. With his name in our minds, we came up with

“Wilburn Safely” (will burn safely!) Wilburn was a BIG hit!! Besides being the spokesman in

the Newsletter, he was also used within the Company’s Safety Manual (also written by Carl and

produced by guess who) and on employee Birthday and Christmas cards.

The following page from one of our editions of the Cemtech Safety Newsletter may be of interest to you . . .

Sorry, the scanner cut the bottom off … I just couldn’t get it to work with me here! But

you got the most of it And remember, follow the leader … waiting to hear from YOU!

Karen Atkins has been keeping us updated on Ted’s health: 6/25 . . .

Hi All,I want to give you a heads up on Ted. He is in the ICU fighting a blood infection. The Drs determined

that there is a backup in his bile duct which is causing the infection. The cure all for this is to insert a

stent to open the duct but to operate is not an option due to his previous surgeries. They were going to

perform a procedure today that would entail inserting an endoscopy tube to the duct and doing the stent

w/o an incision. But, since he had a perforation in the stomach last year, the odds of a 2nd perforation

now proved to be too risky, so it was canceled. We were offered 2 more options, which we will discuss in

depth with 2 teams of Drs tomorrow. Ted is in great spirits (as always). We are asking for your thoughts

and prayers. Thanks, Karen

6/27 . . .

It has been a very difficult 24 hrs, but Ted came thru with flying colors. None of the options given to us

were good but to do nothing would have been lethal, so we went for the only procedure the Drs would

attempt with a 50/50 chance that he would get thru this. The 45 min procedure took 2 hrs, but went

fairly well. He had to have a transfusion (which we were not expecting) and a few other small

complications (also not expected) but the prognosis is VERY good. He is still in the ICU, but hopefully he

will be coming home in a few days. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Karen

7/1 from Ted himself . . .

Thanks for all your prayers and good wishes. I was released from Shadyside Hospital late Friday and let

me tell you...home is a whole lot better. I know it's a real burden for Karen since she has to change

bandages twice daily and lay out my pitt regimen which is extensive. Once again, prescription copays willbe killing us. I am also very weak and K has to help me up/down the stairs so I have to choose my times.

She'll be back on the road as doctors and the holiday permit. Says she feels guilty leaving me alone butthat's ridiculous. Only problem is that the cats can't boost me up the steps.

I now have more pain than before but I hope that will pass. Appetite fairly good but lovin' pie and icecream. I retained enough body water over the five days that I put on 25 pounds and still have arm andleg swelling. Call me the Pillsbury Dough Boy. I'll keep all of you in the loop. Have a GREAT 4th of Julyweek. Lotsa heat here. Luv ya, Ted

I had a phone call from Carol Ann (Downing ’58) Robbins the other day. Cecil is back in

Hospice. She said he looks okay; all of his problems are on the inside of his body. As I told

you before, he really loves to have visits from old friends … and had a wonderful surpriseon Sunday of the Reunion weekend. After leaving the school, Mary Ann (Whiting) Morie, her brother Phil (’59), Bill Broaddus (’59), and spouses went all went by to visit with Cecil.

Carol says he was absolutely thrilled! Carol wants to thank them all once more, and thank

everyone for all their prayers sent his way. Cecil is a strong and stubborn guy that isn’t

going to give up easily. He and Carol have a wonderfully close family with great moral

support and many, many friends that care about them.

And from Margaret (Davis) Offen . . .How are you keeping cool these days? It is pretty nice today but

my how it has been so awfully hot the last few weeks. Nothing really much to write for the NL but didwant to say again how much I enjoyed the gtg in July and how great it was to see everyone that was there.

You might put in the NL that if anyone is looking for fence work my son is in the fence business. He is

reasonable and does a great job.

I was concerned about Garry and Peggy and called a few days ago and guess they are okay now. they hadto be evacuated for several days but luckily their place is okay and they are back home now. I had to

make a flying trip to Springfield a week ago for overnight. My cousin (who was like a brother to me)

passed away and he had a military funeral at the VA Cemetry in Springfield and I was so awe struck by it.

Made goose bumps run up and down my arm when they played taps. He was cremated and they have a

wall where they put the ashes of each veteran. It was very touching. Hope you all are doing okay.

Luv ya, Margaret

My sister-in-law, Lois Jean (Williams ’55) Havens, got me thinking awhile back . . .

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots.

Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I havemade several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physicalactivity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I'vebeen in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up

the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

This is pretty neat.

It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read.

Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have

chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1762 ..

If you haven't, add 1761..

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number.

The first digit of this was your original number

(i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2012) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT

 AROUND WHILE IT LASTS.
