    Vol IX # 6

June 2011 Ed Heinlein, E IC Emeritus

Can you believe its JUNE already? Only 6 months til Christmas! When I think of

June, I think of vacation time back when we used to be able to afford a vacation

at a quarter a gallon for gasoline. One really fun vacation that comes to mind was

back in 2003 when our Class of 57 Chatters group came from all directions to meetin San Antonio, TX. The photo below was taken while we were lunching outdoors

on the Riverwalk had great food, a really fun waiter (I think he took the picture),and lots of talk. After lunch, we took the boat ride down the river; then one group

visited The Alamo, while several of us girls went on a shopping tour, riding thetrolley. What a great memory we made here!

Another thing June brings to us is Fathers Day. Here are a few pics of memorabledays gone by specialthanks to those who answered my plea for photos.

Since Dad was camera shy, this is a rare picture of all the Fann sisters and Dad. It was taken in

the summer of 1982 when I visited Missouri from Colorado. We lost Mom in 1980 and Dad in

1985, so it was good to search through albums for this picture. Barb Lewallen

The Fann girls and their Dad: Glen Lewellen and our daughter Enid Cintora.

From left to right: Barb Lewallen, Sue Dyer, It has become a tradition for Glen to receive

Claude "Pete" Fann, Jean Fann and Clara Smith. a watermelon on Father's Day.

In some cases, June also means college kids have graduated and are now heading

out into the World. Joyce Bailey and I want to take this opportunity to do a little

    bragging . . .

Elizabeth Lewis, granddaughter of Chad Hays, grandson ofJoyce & Gene Bailey, graduated Cum Laude Marilyn & Carl Williams, from Emporia State University, Emporia, KS; graduated Summa Cum Laude frommajored in History with minor in Philosophy Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg,

    KS, majored in Mathematics

I came up with the following information while browsing thru the website of the

Lees Summit Tribuneand have received permission to pass it on from one of our

dear ol friends, Marlese (Lowe) Gourley, whose husband the article was about.

    Click on the following site:http://lstribune.net/lees-summit-news/make-money-for-

bob--.htmand read all about it. Her husband, Bob Gourley, has written a book

revealing all of his dos and donts in the world of business. It would be a great

gift if you have entrepreneur-minded kids or gkids. Im a firm believer in not re-

inventing the wheel and/or profiting from someone elses mistakes! I discovered youcan order the book from Amazon.com been there, done that!

You might want to make it a habit to go to the Tribunes websitewww.lstribune.net

and read up on all the local news of the ol hometown. I hear theJournalis now

    A request for our assistance:

I had a conversation on the phone recently with Denise (Brown 70) Chisum, currently the LeesSummit City Clerk. She and a couple of others are working on a new historical booklet for theLS/Jackson County area and are looking for differentphotographs and/or stories other than the

usual ones youve seen printed. She thought maybe some of us that lived in the area during the

40s/50s might have some old photographs picturing those historic days and some stories ofhistorical significance. I told her I was sure we could supply some good stories, but again she

emphasized of historical significance! Guess that means that those Tom Bickham told on Russ

Childress at Marthas gtg for Fred in January wont work

I told her Id put the word out in the next NL and see ifwe can come up with any usable photos,

so do some digging around and see what you can come up with. Her daytime phone number is

    (816) 969-1005 if you would like to call and let her know what you have before sending it to her.

Also, let her know if its something you would like to have returned to you when they have

finished with it and she can tell you the address where it should be sent. What a wonderful way

to show the kids of today what theyve missed by not being around during our era. Ive gotta geta copy of this book!

Health UpdatesReceived this email message from Terry Reynolds on 5/31 . . . I go for fine tuning onthe old ticker Thursday. They need to correct the wiring and one or two oil lines. Everything

should be ok come Friday. Have never been down this road before so who knows, only the lordknows. And, in reply to my email on Fri., 6/3, An update on the tune-up please???, he

replied . . . Got released today, everything fine, just have to start living like a 72 yr old, not a30 yr old.

So nice to get GOOD news for a change!

Ive spoken to Marcia (Fields) several times on the phone since herterrible ordeal of

being a victim of the recent Joplin tornado. She was originally taken to the hospitalin Springfield, MO, then to a rehab facility, also in Springfield. She expects to be in

there for another couple of weeks, at least. Shes still a fighter and rising up againstthe odds once more. Her husband, Bob, was also taken to the Springfield hospital,

but released after a day or two. Their home was completely demolished, but Bobhas purchased another so hes ready for Marcias homecoming. Their new address

will be: 2628 Evanwood Terrace, Joplin, MO 64804.

    From Ted Atkins . . .

I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Emory Fetters and the tribulations of Marcia andher husband. That whole Joplin disaster is just too much to comprehend. Why do bad thingscontinue to happen to good people? Such is life, huh???

Karen and I are grieving this weekend, June 3, on the 44th anniversary of the death of Billy JoeMcAllister. Think about it. All old-timers should know who he was. Email me if you recall. Nocash prize but a gold star.

If you'll indulge me, I wanted to share my latest saga in the medical world. Following mysurgery in April (pancreatic cancer) I knew I faced still more chemo treatments and having a life-long type 1 diabetic need (right now, 4 insulin shots daily). I was approached then to also takepart in a clinical study on a new pancreas drug, now in its 3rd trial nationwide. Oddly enough Iwas and am the ONLY participant in this part of the world. I had to take a bunch of tests toqualify while others have been turned down. In for a penny...in for a pound I guess. Karen andI had a lot of misgivings about shooting cancer cells back into me but if there's even a remotechance it can help me and others, we decided to proceed.

Each week (I started this on 6/2) for the next 6 months I am receiving 6 vaccine injections, 2 ineach arm and 2 in a leg. The drug is so rare it was flown to Pittsburgh when I was approved, kept frozen in nitrogen until use, then thawed and injected within 30 minutes. EACH shot theysay is worth $5,000, thus $30,000 weekly. You do the math. The procedure, having never beendone before locally, brought an audience (doctors, nurses, pharmacy people) to my hospitalroom just to observe and make notes. I really have turned into a human pin cushion. Myregular chemo stuff resumes 6/16 along with the vaccine. Arms and leg very red, puffy and itchyand they say that will only get worse in the weeks ahead. Am I a trooper or what? Insult toinjury: I even have to pay for my own parking.

Like everyone is fond of saying thru all of this: Consider the alternative. I'm buying into that, you betcha. Hugs and pats on the back to all... Ted [email protected]

I told Ted that I always figured hed go down in some history book, just didnt thinkitd be a medical journal! God bless him!

    An update from our

    fearless leader

    Ed Heinlein

    Happy Anniversary

While grieving over the loss of Fred Peery, Emmy Fetters and Jim Doran (and Harold

Shewmakers brother, Warren) and being horrified upon learning of Marcia and Bob Russells

serious injuries and total loss of their house, I realized that it is been just about ten years since I

first contacted Class members through classmates.com. What an adventure it has been!

One of the things I have learned is that we cannot predict when our journey in this world will

end, or how. Some of our Classmates have passed away relatively quickly, and others have

lingered and suffered. We have all put in a great deal of knee time over the years, and it has

been helpful and healthy for us to do so.

I knew neither Em nor Jim well, and have not seen Jim since graduation. Yet I felt great loss

when they passed. Fred, of course, I knew well. While Warren Shewmaker and I never met, I

knew him slightly thru Harolds eyes and words. We have sent contributions to the Classs

Coverdell Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of each of these men.

Vivian and I once again offer our condolences to the families of these men and to the families of

the other Classmates who have passed away.

However, I feel most fortunate to have known Fred, Em and Jim directly or vicariously through

other Classmates. I would have never had the chance to know them or to grieve over their

passing had we all not got together, again. I am so pleased to be in touch with the members of

Class of 1957 and am proud to be one of those members.

So I say once again: Happy 10th Anniversary, Class of 1957!

On a personal note, I have just started a new Parkinsons medication, which I have beenresisting for eleven years. As I have been taking it only two days, I will report on its

effectiveness next month. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

And, Marilyn, your idea of publishing pics of Classmate dads with their kids is a HOOT!

    From Sharons Kitchen . . .

Hot summer days really wring me out and the last thing I want to do is heat the ovenor stand over the stove. If a hot heavy meal doesnt sound good to you, dont cook--

TOSS! Here are two main-dish salads that I like--one with a fiesta flair. I hope you like

    them. (Sharon)

HAM & LIMA BEAN SALADIts easy to halve the amounts for a smaller family

2 10oz. pkg frozen lima beans

    2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms

1 cup chopped red onion cup fully cooked ham, small cubes1/3 cup chopped ripe olives

cup snipped parsley1 4oz jar diced pimiento, drained

1/3 cup tarragon or white wine vinegar

cup olive oil or salad oil

2 cloves garlic, minced tsp sugar tsp salt

    tsp lemon juice1/8 tsp pepper

    Cook lima beans according to package directions. Drain. Rinse with cold water;

drain again. In a mixing bowl combine beans, mushrooms, onion, ham olives, parsley, and pimiento.

For dressing: In a screw-top jar, combine vinegar, oil, garlic, sugar, salt, lemonjuice, and pepper. Cover and shake to combine. Pour over bean mixture and toss to coat.

Cover and chill 3 to 24 hours before serving, stirring once or twice.

    ENSALADA DE FIESTA (Fiesta Salad)

And from the mailbox . . .Karen Winterowd had told us of their plans to sell their house and travel in their RV. Well, this gives

them a good excuse to take out quickly. Heres a email I received (5/29) from Karen, which she sent

to many of her Santa Fe friends . . .Dear friends - It is hard to ignore the daily news of the tornado victims in Joplin, Mo!!!!!! Sandy & I both

realized that we wanted to do something. We are going back there in 2 weeks in our little travel

trailer. Sandy has contacted folks at the Salvation Army & they are encouraging us to come & do the

volunteer "du jour" work of the day. And good friends, Tom & Dottie (at the Lake where I came out herefrom) told us of Coachlite RV Park & they are saving us a spot + I think Tom & Dots are going to come

down & join us - they are experts at this 'cause of what they do in the Winter months in the South. I have

a dear friend from high school (who is a cancer survivor & has had some other serious health issues)whose home was demolished w/Marcia & her husband in it - only a back wall & the fireplace are

standing. Marcia is in ICU at St. John's Hosp. in nearby Springfield (where Kristen received her nurses

training). If Salvation Army doesn't need the old social worker, I can go over & assist Marcia w/herneeds & recovery.

You all know me & wonder why I'm telling you all of this. The back of our pick up will be empty to

carry the little love gifts that you want to send w/us!!!!! Yes, when you are at the store pick up an extra

tube of toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, bars of soap. Yes, go through your linen & throw in

that extra set of sheets or towels that you really don't need but they will - theirs got blown to

smithereens! Go through your closets & look at some clothing, underwear, shoes that you could dow/out. Flashlights & batteries, it's really dark there now.

O.K., we're counting on you to fill our pick up. Call us & we'll gladly come pick up your stuff. 982-

    0471 home, 660-2045, S' cell, 670-9775, K's cell.

Thanx - from the Land of Enchantment to the Heartland - yes, we'll help out. xo Sandy & Karen

And then on 6/13 . . . Hi friends - We arrived at our campsite - in overflow - after dark but did get aglimpse of one area of town that the tornado hit while skipping over the interstate that we were

on. YOU COULD SMELL IT! I remember my brother taking me to a disaster area West of Dallas some

years back & you could smell the death & destruction. Last night I recalled that smell.

ChaCha & I are "home" this a.m. resting & tidying up our "nest". Sandy just left to go in & see what is

up, what they want him to do & to see where to drop off all of your "goodies". He will come back

around noon, fill me in & we'll possibly go see my injured friend, Marcia who is now in a rehab in

    Springfield, Mo.

Very hot & humid but green, green, green - still love the grass and trees. As I write, CNN is showing me

the Az fires & the critical danger that NM is in. Breathe lightly my friends.

One happy little note. Sandy indulged me & we diverted our travels off of 40 Highway down to Duncan,

Ok. to sneak in a joyful little visit w/Jerry & Geraldine Davis, two favorite friends from high

school. Geraldine was always the best one to talk to, laugh & giggle with. Jerry, too, & we did a lot of

that for a few hours before we got back on the highway & our adventure. Sandy enjoyed them, also, &

I'm sure we will find reasons to continue this fun time together in the future. Their home is so lovely &

sounds as if they truly have gained some great friends to socialize with in the 6 yrs. that they have been

  • 8/6/2019 Hi-Life II Vol IX #6 June 2011

    13/15

there. I asked Gerry if she had a special status there since papa had been the big Methodist minister in

town & she said we wouldn't believe how well they have been received & treated. In Gerry's humble

way she commented that it was almost embarrassing. Says nice things about her Mom & Dad. Rev.

Wahl died 2 yrs. ago at age 103! Wow.

We shall keep you posted. As Harry S. Truman use to sing, "Way down in Missouri............" From the

    Ozarks. S & K

And 6/14 . . . Hi Marilyn - Sandy took this pic of Marcia & me on his "Droid". Only wish we took a pic of

Jerry & Geraldine w/his cell 'stead of my camera & I could have sent a pic of those 2 today. You'll have

to wait for the Davis' 'til we get home I guess.

Marcia is the same wonderful Marcia that we all knew as kids. She has been through so much & very

fortunate to be alive but her spirits are high as well as her attitude at what happened to her as well as

husband, Bob. She has some physical challenges to overcome such as ambulation but she appears to be

ready to start working on that w/physical, occupational & speech therapist's.

It was so much fun to see Jerry & Geraldine Sun. They both looked great & their home is solovely. Remember how Geraldine could put colors or an outfit together & look "smashing"? That is how

their home is. They appear to still be the best of friends, enjoy each other & their family & friends

around them. Lots of love there.

Shortly after Sandy took our picture, Marcia began telling me about your early banking venture, Marilyn,

when you were 5 & you wanted to be the first human ATM. I believe you swallowed a nickel & for some

reason the Dr. your Mom took you to put a black dot on your neck at the base of your throat. Marcia

said that she was afraid to look at that dot for fear something would happen. What?!? More of our 5

year old wisdom in the Midwest! More later. xo Karen

That nickel adventure is something Marcia and I will never forget. The spot was put thereafter the x-ray showing the Dr just where it was located so he could go down the throat after it. I

started out at a Dr office in Independence where Id been shopping with my aunts, but it was down

too far for him to reach, so they fwdd me to KU Med Center in K.C. The nickel had been given tome to buy an ice cream cone at Woolworths. Guess I got tired ofwaiting Carl says I would

definitely hold out for the ice cream today! To show inflation, my niece (Georgeannes oldest child)

swallowed a quarter about 25 years later. Anyway, I wouldnt let my Mom wash the dot off

dont know if I considered it my badge of courage or if I just had fun scaring Marcia!

Thanks to Karen, Sandy, and all of the other volunteers that have gone to the aid of Joplin.

DeeAnn (Ott) Herde and her husband, Ed, have been a busy couple lately . . .

Dear Marilyn, Thanks again for all the updating you do for us. Our prayers and hearts go out to all thosetouched by disasters this past few months especially Marcia and Bob. Called Karen and they'll be stayingin Carthage at a campground where we stay alot. Glad to talk with her and know she'll be working withthe Salvation Army. She's very knowledgeable and helped me when I owned the business.

We returned from wintering in Texas slowly because of high winds and rain. Less than a week later wedrove to St. Louis to pick up our daughter at the airport and help her get ready to move to Maryland. Thetornado was only blocks from us and the airport pictures you saw on TV is where we had justbeen. Again we returned home to leave. My ten year younger sister Novella Perrin just opened amuseum in Branson, Missouri. She has the largest collection of Gone With The Wind memorabilia in theU. S. Ed and I missed the Joplin tornado, camped in the campground that just opened after the flood --

stayed two weeks to stock the museum - had two teen age granddaughters with us- left the day beforethe campground flooded again. Parse God we are safely home.

We are working on our "to do" list. The yard work is always there and with ninety plus degree weather wework early mornings and late evenings.

Called Paula Rhodes, Jeannie Staub and John Dilllingham. All are fine - John is busy as he always isand feeling well. Paula is still the great seamstress, fared the wind and rain in Oklahoma. We talk aboutblood pressure medications alot! Jeannie says she's well for her age, loves retirement, stays home andtakes blood pleasure medication. How our conversations have changed over the years!!

We did slip in the dinner at "Rumors" and were able to see some of the class. Sorry we missed some of

you and the scholarship presentation. Dee Ann

Now THAT was a memorable movie!

Thanks, DeeAnn, for telling us about Novellas

museum. Id love to visit it. Maybesomeday.
