Auspace, a systems integrator based in Adelaide Australia, has created an innovative In-Vehicle Management System (IVMS) using HGT products and satellite-only communications – reducing the cost and complexity normally associated with dual mode cellular/satellite systems.

Inmarsat IsatM2M satellite communica-tions service to provide basic Position, Velocity and Time (PVT) data, Auspace envisaged the combination of IsatM2M and ViewPoint, a web-based Journey Management tracking application from Honeywell Global Tracking, opening up the possibility of enhancing a Journey Management application with additional FSM features to achieve a more full-featured asset tracking solution.

Specifically, Auspace wanted to pro-vide its customers, operating in remote and rural environments, features includ-ing driver identification, driver behaviour (see sidebar), private-road speeding vio-lation notifications, and welfare check-ins, generally available only on cellular based communications platforms serv¬ing urban population centres.

Solution

Auspace developed an IVMS (In Vehicle Management System) that uses Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor driver behaviour, including ac-celeration, braking, turning and private-road speeding.

Each time a behaviour is deemed to

be outside of the acceptable thresholds set by the customer, a violation notifica-tion is sent via the HGT satellite terminal over the ISatM2M satellite network to the Auspace Gateway backend system. The Auspace Gateway system gener-ates and emails Adobe PDF reports on a customer-defined schedule to high-light and trend behaviour violations for management intervention. (see sidebar)

The IVMS incorporates an in-vehicle driver feedback device with Green (OK) / Orange (Marginal Violation) / Red (Harsh Violation) lights that provide real-time feedback to the driver; a critical feature for behavioural change.

The driver also has access to a dedi-cated panic button that can be used to alert headquarters in case of emer-gency.

For its IVMS solution, Auspace se-

Client Profile

Auspace is a systems integrator and Valued Added Reseller (VAR) with ex-tensive background in satellite technolo-gies and a focus on providing custom solutions using a mix of technologies to meet specific business requirements.

The Adelaide, Australia-based com-pany is part of the Nova Group of companies, and deploys asset tracking solutions for Machine to Machine (M2M) communications, Field Service Manage-ment (FSM) and personnel tracking, in a range of mining, health, utilities and duty of care applications.

Challenge

Auspace customers operating in remote and rural locations are reliant on satellite communications for as-set tracking and duty of care. In some cases, business activity is performed entirely outside of the cellular footprint; in others, visibility of operators can only be guaranteed with a satellite based ap-proach due to sporadic cellular coverage.

While many satellite-based asset tracking solutions in the market today use the Very Low Data Rate (VLDR)

lected the ViewPoint Journey Map-ping application and satellite termi-nals from Honeywell Global Tracking. The two companies partnered in a comprehensive test program using multiple ISatM2M satellites around the World to ensure quality of system performance under real-world condi-tions.

“We utilize a variety of communica-tions technologies to suit specific customer requirements” explains Paul Weiss, General Manager of Auspace.

“It turns out that using ViewPoint and IsatM2M is a very cost effective way of implementing an IVMS service for remote and rural requirements that is scalable and can also be used in urban environments.”

The IVMS system has been suc-cessfully deployed with vehicle-mounted SAT-202 satellite terminals from Honeywell Global Tracking, all tracked in ViewPoint.

“We’re very pleased with our col-laboration with Honeywell Global Tracking, and look forward to devel-oping further innovative asset tracking solutions leveraging the HGT prod-uct portfolio” concludes Paul Weiss

Driver Behaviour

The Driver Behaviour module in the

Auspace IVMS records and reports vio-

lations of acceleration, braking, turning

and private-road speeding.

The private-road speeding functionality

requires knowledge of the designated

speed limits, often in remote and private

areas such as mine sites, for which

commonly available posted speed limit

metadata does not exist, or is sporadic

and often in error.

This type of metadata can be defined

by the customer using geofences and

custom map layers in ViewPoint, and

any violations can be viewed in detail in

the Driver Behaviour report.

Geofences can be simply defined by

the customer using polygon, circle or

route shapes directly in the browser

window.

“We’re very pleased with our collaboration

with HGT, and look forward to developing

further innovative asset tracking solutions that

leverage the HGT product portfolio.”Paul Weiss, GM, Auspace

ViewPoint™ Interface

Search FiltersIt can be difficult to view all the vehicles in a large fleet all at once. ViewPoint allows you to filter your views based on Fleet, Unit, Alert Status, and Warning.

Menu BarIncludes application preferenc-es, as well as tools for reports, user administration, code-books, points-of-interest etc.

Information TabsThis area displays tools and information related to Units, Geofences, Points-of-Interest and Map Layers.

Messages/MailboxThis area displays sent and received Tracking messages, User messages, Alert mes-sages and Warning messages for each terminal.

GeofenceCreating custom geofences can be done quickly in ViewPoint using easy-to-use click-and-drag tools. Each geofence can be defined in one of several ways, e.g. Warning, Alert, Safe, Route, Curfew, Waypoint, Checkpoint, Overdue and Static.

Map AreaViewPoint includes web-based maps from Google and Bing. You can view them in Standard, Satel-lite or Hybrid mode. You can also add custom map layers.
