Herts Disability Sports Forum for Young People 9 August 2013

The Herts Disability Sports Forum for Young People exists to support individuals with disabilities, and organisations

delivering sport to disabled people, to get involved in sport and physical activity in Hertfordshire. The forum has

representation from the county’s Project Ability School, Special Educational Need Schools, Local Authority Sports

Development Officers and the Herts Sports Partnership; and invites officers from local sports clubs, National Governing

Bodies and Advisory Services to its meetings on a regular basis. The forum works to four themes; support of Project

Ability, talent ID/taster days, increasing participation and the support of community and clubs.

Nominal amounts of funding are available for clubs to apply for through the group, to support ventures that aim to

increase participation in sport among the disabled community. This newsletter aims to share information about

activities and events taking place to the wider community.

Use the gym under the instruction of someone who understands your condition… Based at Hartham Leisure Centre on Hartham Common is Tom Horey who in 2010 suffered a spinal cord injury whilst playing rugby, which has left him wheelchair bound. Since then he has completed both his Fitness Instructor qualification and, more specifically an Instructability qualification – a gym based certificate which enables him to work with other disabled people. Tom is now looking to utilise his knowledge to get people into the centre and help them become more active. There are a variety of ways in which the equipment at the centre can be utilised by disabled people and with Tom’s expertise to hand, the centre is keen to help to show how individuals can still have the benefits of exercise. Disability Sport Support SchemeThe Herts Disability Sports Forum for Young People is pleased to announce that its Disability Sport Support Scheme

is now open to receive applications for funding. The scheme exists to help individuals with disabilities and

organisations delivering sport to disabled people to get involved in sport and physical activity in Hertfordshire.

Organisations delivering sport, including sports clubs and schools, may apply for support of up to £500 in one

application with, among other things:

Training courses for members to increase disability awareness

Providing taster sessions for adults and/or children with disabilities to try new sports activities

Increasing the provision of extra-curricular activity for children with disabilities

Sporting events which aim to increase participation among disabled people in sport, improve activity levels and

health of people with disabilities and improve the levels of performance of disabled sportspeople

Recently funded project! The Herts Disability Sports Forum for Young People is pleased to have awarded the Watford and District YMCA

£500 to set up a brand new multi-sport session in St Albans, following the success if a similar pilot in Watford.

Herts Learning Disability Games Fun!

On Sunday 28 July a total of seven teams of adults from

five of the counties local authorities made their way to

Jarman Park Athletics Track in Hemel Hempstead to

compete in the Herts Learning Disability Games.

More than 200 athletes and volunteers attended the

event organised by the staff at Dacorum Sportspace. The

Herts Sports Partnership provided funding while Apex

360 took control of running the various activity stations.

Additional volunteer support also came in the form of

Dacorum Mencap, Dacorum Borough Council and family

and friends of the teams.

Teams took part in a circuit of group activities in the

morning where they could score points as a collective,

followed by individual competition in the afternoon.

It was also a great day for local clubs to highlight how

they are embracing opportunities to work with disabled

people. Gosling Tennis Centre and Easy Rider Cycles

came along to show how their respective activities could

be adapted to meet the needs of others.

The day’s overall winners were a very excited East Herts!

Table Cricket Leaders Course

Course Target:

The Table Cricket Leaders Course is specifically aimed at coaches, Lecturers, teachers and teaching

assistants

Course Aim:

To provide a basic understanding of Table Cricket and how it can be introduced in to a new group

Course Deliverables:

1. Introduce and teach the game of Table Cricket and develop an understanding for the basic rules

2. Understand the potential problems that may arise prior to the game taking place (e.g. table calibration)

3. Be aware of the specific needs and requirements of all players

4. Teach basic skill practices to players

5. Have an understanding of the existing competitive structures to enable individuals to progress

6. Provide a good understanding of how the game is officiated and scored

7. A good knowledge of the Table Cricket Development Programme.

This course is designed to promote Table Cricket and generate interest and awareness of the FE College

Games Table Cricket Competition that will be held on 14th March 2014 at Wodson Park in Ware.
