WHAT’S NEW AT HHMS

• Improved security– All doors will be locked between 7:58 and 2:51– Entrance by pressing a button and speaking to

the office– A camera system has also been installed

• If someone is not immediately available, please be patient—there will a learning curve for all.

Progress Reports Every 9 weeks

• Nine weeks end– October 16, December 22, March 12, May 28

• Progress Reports Go Home– October 22, January 7, March 18

• Last progress report only mailed if the parent gives the school a self-address stamped envelope; may also be picked up during the month of June in the middle school office

Starting Your Day

• Buses stop in the circle—go to the Blue Gym or to the cafeteria for breakfast

• Riders—Go to the Blue Gym• Gym area—expected to sit and keep the area clean• May buy drinks and snacks from the machines—

not a substitute for a good breakfast• May not be in the hallways—bell rings at 7:50 to

enter hall area

– Don’t share your combination– Teachers will assist you– Use LARGE magnets—not tape or small

magnets—destroy the mechanisms – No Food or soft drinks in lockers

Automated Breakfast and Lunch Program

• Please pay large amounts monthly or weekly—envelope with name and ID

• Account associated with Student ID # and password—MUST MEMORIZE

• Cost per day for students—Breakfast--$1.50 and Lunch--$2.00• Breakfast runs from 7:30 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.

– Go straight to the cafeteria—do not hang out with high school students– Go to the Blue Gym when finished

• New lunch procedures—students will line up to walk to lunch• Regular lunch line or salad bar line• No charging--P & J sandwich or cheese sandwich for $.50; $.35 for

milk• May not purchase snack items on lunch account, if in debt• Money accepted in line but deposited into account—no change

After School Supervision

• No students should be in the building unsupervised after 3:15

• After school area for those participating in HHMS sponsored events—ON SCHEDULED DAYS ONLY

• Includes before practice and before games• Students must enter the room by 3:15 and stay

until the assigned time—No leaving• Students must sign in and put the reason for

staying

Medical Information

• All medications must be taken to the nurse’s office, even cough drops

• Law does not allow prescription medication to be transported home by the student

• Send only the amount of medicine needed at school

• If possible obtain a medication bottle for home and school

• Need written permission to give medication

Absenteeism

• Call the middle school office• Answering machine on 24/7• Note if no phone• Fail to notify makes the absence unexcused• 10 day attendance policy• Get documentation for medical, dental, or court

appointments• Use homework hotline to find out assignments—

follow automated phone message

Dress Code

• No hats, bandannas, sunglasses• Shorts, skirts, skorts, dresses knee length;

compression shorts and/or leggins may only be worn under appropriate school dress

• No inappropriate references on clothing• No holes in jeans or pants• No chains, studded items• Sleeves in shirts and no bellies showing• Christmas dress---Khakis, skirts and sweaters, and

church type dresses; no jeans for boys

Other Handbook Policies

• Water in the classroom• Cell Phones are allowed with restrictions—Allowed only

for emergencies or for after school use—must be turned OFF during school day –use by permission only, which includes the bus—Best to leave in bookbag or locker– Violations: 1st take, office, return; 2nd take, office, return to parent

only—1 hr. ASD, 3rd repeat; could lead to SS– New state law on Sexting--handout

• Bookbags and coats • Bus rules and passes• Skateboards—For safety purposes, not allowed on school

property

DISCIPLINE

• Owned by the student• HHMS goal—NO discipline problems—a

community of respect• However, if problems—handled by the teacher

and if necessary to the office—with the goal being to learn from mistakes

• If not, Progressive discipline policy—1st discipline referral, after 3—SS; Could but hopefully would not progress to ISS or OSS

ISTEP + Testing

• Main dates—March 1- 10; April 26 – May 5

• Attendance is vital. Please reschedule any appointments or trips.

• Scores are important. Determine classes a student may or may not be able to take in middle school and in high school

• Most books are being handed out at registration

• Please put your name in all books and on all materials

• Keep your books in good shape by not throwing them around or stuffing notebooks inside—parents do not want the extra charges
