Create new value by rethinking an existing brand, then developing a design language embodied in an innovative line of products.

Students will work as a team to reimage the brand and develop the design language that will inform products designed by each team

member. They must be physical objects that are useful and help the chosen brand reach new customers, improve the value proposition

and/or expand market share.

Design Brief

Page 6: Hensley Portfolio @016 6

Problem StatementMr. Coffee’s current brand strategies exhibit a lack of clear identity, visual

language, and differentiation from competitors. These aspects mislead the consumer, causing them to perceive the brand as limited and antiquated.

HypothesisIn order to appear less antiquated, Mr. Coffee needs to develop a clear visual

identity that leaves the consumer with a distinct impression of the brand. Additional directions such as the integration of sub-brands as well as a focus on

sustainability in both practices and products will shape Mr. Coffee as a forward-thinking company.

Some users grow tired of the wait times involved in various steps of brewing coffee

Users rarely have an environment that makes the coffee process easy and fast

Many coffee makers and accessories are difficult to clean and transport

Mr. Coffee offers several high-end products, but do not visually fit in with that market

Mr. Coffee is thought of as cheap, dated, or unknown, meaning their marketing strategies are ineffective

Millenials do not recognize or have a lasting impression of the brand

Mr. Coffee’s recent rebrand is largely thought of as unsuccessful and too reminiscent of other brands

Drip machines do not have consistent form language, images, materials, or icons, making it difficult for users to recognize the brand

Products and marketing strategies do not emphasize the strong heritage of the brand

Emerging technologies point toward prep that includes a fun factor, easy cleaning, and exposed processes

Utilizing trends such as sustainability would greatly differentiate Mr. Coffee from competitors, as sustainability is largely unheard of in the coffee industry

Simplistic, friendly design language and geometry would lend themselves toward Mr. Coffee’s essence of accessibility

New Brand Essence

Mr. Coffee provides a sense of accessibility, familiarity, and approachability in the minds of its users. Mr. Coffee intends to show these qualities through the relatively inexpensive price of products,

through the range of their product mix, through their technology offerings, through recognizable design language, and through

warm and friendly graphic design.

Accessability.

Final Design

Elevate is a complete rethinking of the traditionial coffee machine. By taking the coffee off the counter and hanging the kettle by the handle, we are celebrating the brew and the process that Mr. Coffee has been know for since it's inception. Instead of having a coffee machine just to serve a function, Elevate aims to become a fixture in the kitchen and make coffee and more enjoyable and social experience by have the option to keep the machine on the counter or hang from the wall.

Page 14: Hensley Portfolio @016 6

A cream colored exterior with navy accents aims to appeal to a more sophisticated audience, and showcase the elegance of our Mr. Coffee relaunch. A thermal carafe with a brushed aluminum exterior reinforces these ideas. The polished aluminum foot ensures stability in a thin design, while reflecting light back onto the product.

New Approach

Two New Strategies for Bike Helmets

Increased Preventability- By Increasing visibility and size, the rider can possibily avoid crashes by making the other party aware of their prescence

Increased Safety- By adding aditional padding and energy absorbing material, the rider would be less likley to sustain a concussion or head injury as the result of a crash

Final DirectionSignal is received by the helmet and the spring loaded fin spings forward.

Spring tension brings the fin forward and holds it there

Reads brainwaves when used thinks of their trigger thought and activates small mechanisim to release spring

Final Renders

The open air design and streamlined look evoke the Art Deco Inspiration while maintaining a fresh and modern aesthetic. The bright color evokes the Memphis inspiration, facilitating a visual focal point and increasing visual interest. Intended to fit in a sleek and clean interior space, Deco Motion could be the center piece for any room.

Color & Material Variations

Color and Material variations allow for the user to customize their piece for their own sensabilities. Options without color are also avaliable, to appeal to a wider array of owners.

Page 44: Hensley Portfolio @016 6

Area of Interest Outdoor Play:

• Importance of using whole body to develop gross motor skills

http://www.earlychildhoodnews.com/earlychildhood/article_view.aspx?ArticleID=275

Benefits of Outdoor play:

• Practice their emerging physical skills like Running, jumping, and leaping

• Also develop social and emotional skills simultaneously

• More likely to invent games and express themselves in their own way

• Promotes autonomy, descision making, and organization skills

• Free play within a set of limits helps them understand why rules are necessary

• Helps develop all 5 senses with simoltaneous stimulation

• Fosters an appreciation for the natural world around them

Page 45: Hensley Portfolio @016 6

45

“How can we incorporate self driven, open-ended play in a way that also stimulates physical development of gross and fine motor skills?”

Problem statement:

Why is Sandbox play important?

• Use their hands to explore and learn, developing fine motor skills and strength

• By creating their own worlds in sand, it encourages their imaginative development

• Improved coordination and independence

• Add to their sensory vocabulary as they touch and feel

• encourages collaboration with team-based creations

• Practice their social skills and awareness by managhing their own space and tools not to disturb others

• Experience impermancence of a knocked over castle or

creations, and encourages them to live in the moment

Why is Role Play important?

• Stimulates imagination and enhances social development through freindship and cooperation, listening, and turn taking

• helps develop a childs own imaginative world and flexes their creative muscles

• learning to express their emotions in the safe imaginative environment free of embarssment

• helps them tackle larger issues that may be challenging on their own

• learn about other cultures, languages and customs outside their own level of farmiliarity

• • encourages activites that will later become vital in

school, like counting, letters, and patience

Page 46: Hensley Portfolio @016 6

Rusty encourages imaginative play through role-play scenarios involving his character and

his play functions. He teaches cooperation by working together with Tinny the Turtle and encouraging more than one child to

play together. Rusty creates a centerpiece for sandbox play that can also expand into indoor

and ride on play.
