K ing H enry the 8 th w as born on 28 th June 1491, the 3 rd son of K ing H enry 7 th.D uring his reign he had three children, M ary, E lizabeth & E dw ard.
H enry w as m arried six tim es, h is three children w ere born to his first three w ives. Catherine of A ragon w as the m other of M ary 1, A nne B oleyn the m other of E lizabeth 1 and Jane Seym our the m other of E dw ard V 1.
H enry reigned for 38 years, on his death in June 1547 he w as succeeded by his son E dw ard, aged 10 years old and not in good health. H e w as K ing for 6 years until Ju ly 1553.
F ollow ing E dw ard’s death, M ary becam e Q ueen. M ary being H enry’s E ldest child w as 38 years old and like her brother not in good health. M ary reigned for 5 years until 1553.
In 1553 E lizabeth w as crow ned Q ueen. She becam e one of G reat B ritain’s greatest m onarchs, reign ing for 45 years.

H enry 8 th m arried six tim es throughout his reign. H is first w ife w as Catherine of A ragon(1509-1533). Catherine w as m arried to H enry’s elder brother A rthur. W hen he died , H enry m arried her and m ade her his Q ueen. H enry and Catherine had six children , M ary being the on ly one to survive beyond childhood.
H enry needed a m ale heir to continue the Tudor lin e and w hen this didn’t happen , he divorced Catherine in 1533. H er reign as Q ueen lasted 24 years.

H enry’s second w ife w as A nne B oleyn(1533-1536). Together they had tw o children, E lizabeth and a son (unnam ed) w ho d ied at birth.
A nne w as not a popular Q ueen w ith H enry’s subjects, and w as under pressure to provide a m ale heir, w hen her son died H enry started to look for w ays to find a new w ife to give him a m ale heir.
A nne’s reign cam e to an end in 1536 w hen she w as beheaded. A nne’s reign lasted 3 years.

Jane Seym our(1536-1537) becam e H enry’s 3 rd w ife tw o w eeks after the death of A nne B oleyn . Jane provided the m ale heir that H enry longed for. E dw ard w as born in 1536, this birth w as to cause the death of his m other.

Three years after the death of Jane Seym our, H enry w as talked into m arriage for the fourth tim e.
A nne of C leves(1540-1540), w as a foreign princess w ho did not m eet H enry’s expectations. A s quickly as he m arried he arranged a divorce. A nne w as replaced as Q ueen after less than 1 year.

Catherine H ow ard (1540-1542) becam e H enry’s 5th Q ueen. B eing m uch younger than H enry, Catherine w as expected to produce a son quickly. W hen this didn’t happen, H enry conspired to find a w ay out of the m arriage. T reason charges w ere brought against Catherine, she w as found guilty and beheaded in 1542. H er reign lasted tw o years.

H enry w as now aging, and looked for a w ife w ho w ould be m ore a com panion rather than som eone w ho w ould provide him w ith any m ore children .
Catherine P arr (1543-1547) becam e his sixth and last w ife. Catherine w as H enry’s Q ueen until h is death in 1547.

D uring H enry’s 38 years on the throne, his six w ives had a total of 35 years as Q ueen. A ll reigns w ere of different lengths and could be used to w ork out the average tim e that one w ife and each child w as on the throne.

A fter H enry’s death, the son that he longed for w as only K ing for 6 years. O n E dw ard’s death his sister M ary becam e Q ueen , reign ing for 5years. E lizabeth then becam e Q ueen, w ith her reign lasting 45 years, since w hich tim e history has pronounced her one of the m ost successfu l m onarchs of all tim e.
The Tudor legacy w as not as H enry envisaged. A fem ale Tudor w as to be rem em bered above all others and E lizabeth’s reign w as to cover som e of the m ost im portant aspects in B ritish H istory.
H enry changed E nglish law to please him self during his reign, w hich enabled him to divorce, m arry and legally m urder his w ives. D uring his reign, H enry also changed the county’s religion from Catholic to P rotestant, breaking aw ay from the church in R om e to allow him to annul tw o of his m arriages.
The Tudor reigns of H enry and his children are an im portant part of our history, as many changes w ere m ade to law s and religion at this tim e. They w ere also turbu lent tim es.
U nder H enry, E dw ard and E lizabeth the country w as of the Protestant faith. M ary w as brought up in the Catholic faith follow ing her m other, and w hen crow ned Q ueen she changed the country’s m ain religion to Catholicism .
This period in the country’s h istory continues to fascinate m any people, w ith books, artw ork, and bu ildings continuing to attract visitors to our historical sites, galleries and churches.
