Mullion in Bloomgears up for thecoming seasonAlthough the winter months seem a quieter timefor gardeners, Mullion in Bloom volunteers havebeen busy preparing for the coming season.

Very soon now the hanging baskets will be in place

and the ground planters will be filled with new plants.

As well as the tried and tested varieties, they have

this year, some new and exciting combinations of

blooms for all to enjoy.

Mullion in Bloom is an entirely voluntary organisa-

tion and so if you find you can spare a few hours and

would like to make a difference by helping out, or

would like to look after a particular area, they would

always welcome your assistance, please contact Mary

Mullion in Bloom Annual Plant sale will be held at

Mullion Methodist Chapel on Thursday 14th May

Village pub embracesCornish languageThings have changed a lot at The StarInn, Porkellis. Since their arrival inJuly 2014, new owners AnthonyRichards and Andrew Denton haveworked hard with the local communityto make the pub central to life in thissmall village where Anthony was bornand raised.

Now The Star Inn hosts not only regular

music events and pub quizzes, but also a

Euchre night and Cornish language class-

es. The classes are run by teachers from

Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek, the Cornish

Language Fellowship, and focus on every-

day Cornish and simple phrases; however,

Anthony and Andrew wanted more.

‘We want The Star Inn to be somewhere

really inclusive,’ said Andrew. ‘It wasn’t

enough to just have a learners’ group and

occasionally host a language night, we

want to be able to welcome customers in

Cornish and serve them at the bar in

Cornish.’

As far as the Kowethas knows, this situ-

ation is completely unique. ‘It’s really

great to hear the language normalised,’

said Dee Hunt, Kowethas support officer,

‘Not everyone wants to study and become

fluent, so this is a great way to bring the

Cornish language back into everyday vil-

lage life as well as celebrate the unique-

ness of our heritage and culture.’

Has it been hard work? ‘Yes,’ said

Anthony, also a fluent French speaker, ‘but

it’s been great fun, too. Of course, it’s cer-

tainly not compulsory to speak Cornish at

The Star Inn, but for customers that want

to give it a try, we’re always willing to

practise our new language skills on them!’

What’s more, it seems as though this

has been embraced by not only the

Porkelllis language class but also by other

pub regulars too, who routinely now say

‘Gorthugher da!’ and ‘Nos dha!’ (‘Good

evening!’ and ‘Good night!’), as well as

sometimes having a go at ordering drinks

and snacks in Cornish themselves, using

the signs around the pub as a guide. So

successful has this initiative been that The

Star Inn is all set to host its first ‘Yeth an

Werin’ – a Cornish language gathering for

fluent speakers and beginners alike. Of

course, anyone and everyone is also wel-

come to come along and try out a little

Cornish at the bar or just hear the lan-

guage spoken in a relaxed and friendly

environment.

A perfect 10 for HelstonGymnastics Club’s renovationSwallows of Helston Gymnastics Clubhas recently completed a renovationthanks to the £1,000 worth of buildingmaterials they received as beneficiar-ies of RGB Building Supplies’ ‘WellBuilt Community Fund’.

As well as creating a much needed

emergency exit pathway, the club has

completely transformed the viewing area

making it a welcoming place for parents to

watch the progress of their children dur-

ing practice sessions. The area has been

boxed making it warmer, and space for

refreshments has been created.

Additionally, the Community Fund

allowed the club to renovate and move the

girls changing room to a more convenient

location and also refurbish the boys

changing room.

Gymnastics Club Trustee, commented:

“Everyone in the gymnastics club is

absolutely thrilled at the refurbishment.

We would like to say a big thank you to

RGB Building Supplies for choosing us as

Children from Landewednack School atThe Lizard enjoyed a spectacular day atthe Hall for Cornwall in Truro onThursday 30th April not as members ofthe audience but performers on thestage! The youngsters along with chil-dren from Garras, Boskenwyn, Sithneyand Germoe schools were invited by theCornwall Music Education Hub, whichshow cases musical talent from all acrossCornwall.

Landewednack School Choir were one of

the five schools who formed the "Helston &

Lizard Schools Cluster Choir" which had

been created especially for the Sounds of

the Hub concert. The children were led

superbly by Christine Judge who had visited

each school on separate occasions to teach

them the songs they would be performing

during the show.

Earlier in the day the children had enjoyed

a Chinese drumming workshop held in a

marquee on Lemon Quay. They learnt the

traditional sounds, movements and chants

of a Chinese musician. Rehearsals with their

fellow choir members and an exciting sound

check on the main stage brought the after-

noon to an end before the Landewednack

children were treated to tea in Pizza

Express accompanied by Headteacher

Louise Jones, music teacher Judith Green

and teaching assistants Lyndsay Bray and

Kate Hughes. Thank you to Peter and his

staff at Pizza Express who warmly wel-

comed and looked after the children during

their tea!

Headteacher Louise Jones said "The

whole day and evening was an absolutely

fantastic experience for the children and

adults. We were so proud of them all as they

didn't actually get to perform their songs

until nearly 10pm, but they still sang beau-

tifully. We would like to express our thanks

to everyone at the Hall for Cornwall and the

Cornwall Music Education Hub. Our special

thanks must go to Christine Judge who

worked so hard with our children and

inspired them to give such a magical per-

formance on the stage."

Mrs Jones went onto say "how proud she

and her staff were of the children's impecca-

ble behavior throughout the whole day - we

couldn't have been prouder of them"

as Sainsbury’s local charity of the year

in 2014 and with their support have

managed to hold some fantastic com-

munity events from carol singing with

reindeer, raffles, Easter Bonnet Parade,

action packed sports days, and our lat-

est venture the community fun day

which will see 3 volunteers standing in

wheelie bins being covered in slime

(all in the name of charity)! Our initia-

tives have also generated other com-

munity events and working partner-

ships. At the heart of LCT is our local

community, and we want to support

everyone by offering bespoke services

and with stronger partnerships work-

ing in Helston we can achieve this. We

were also named has one of The

Masked Ball’s charities this year and

would like to thank them for support-

ing us. This, another local collabora-

tion, giving Helston new opportunities,

all proceeds will be ploughed back into

new projects for affordable family fun!

We are also giving local performers

the chance to showcase their talents so

if you want to get yourself out there

and you can sing, play an instrument,

dance, be part of a band or even pull a

The so-called 'fight of the centu-ry' may have failed to live up tothe hype over the May Day week-end, but you can always rely onthe Masked Ball to deliver aknockout performance.

Cornwall's premiere dance festi-

val could have been on the ropes

when rain and wind battered the

site, but like Floyd Mayweather it

rolled with the punches and

ducked, shimmied and weaved its

way into the history books.

The two-day electronic music

extravaganza - featuring heavyhit-

ters like Bonobo, Andrew

Weatherall, Simian Mobile Disco

and The Stanton Warriors -

brought all the glitz and glamour of

the Vegas ringside to the clifftops

of Porthleven.

given the weather, revellers fol-

lowed the rainbow that formed the

site's main gate to enter a paradise

for those who love to party as hard

as a Pacquiao punch. The main fes-

tival field was fog-shrouded fantasy

world, overlooking the iconic

Masked Ball sign and the pirate

ship and giant mirrored skull of

the outdoor May Day! May Day!

arena, which was unfortunately

KO'd by the weather before the

first bell sounded.

However, the Masked Ball came

out of its corner fighting and

turned the world turned upside

down with On The Wonk, a venue

hosted by Loose People, where rev-

ellers danced on the ceiling as

tables and sofas hung from the

floor above them.

The marvellous Malinkey's

transforming truck was the next

stop and provid-

ed the perfect place for round or

two of drinks with Caberet Voltaire

DJs, while the intimate Big Gay

Disco was even keener on man-

hugging than Mayweather.

Sir Vinyl's Dome saw the likes of

Congo Natty AKA Rebel MC serving

up the dancehall vibes, but the

main event in the festival field was

the Live Deck big top, home to live

acts like Crazy P and the Cuban

Brothers - whose fancy footwork

made Mayweather look like he had

lead in his boots.

Punch-drunk from these open-

ing salvos, revellers staggered past

a fire-breathing dragon and into

the Grand Ballroom, where the

likes of Panda and Psychemagick

traded heavy bass bodyblows.

From here on in, the Ball deliv-

ered a combination of hits that

truly assaulted the senses.

Future Garden played host to the

Idjut Boys while Shoresditch piled

on the pressure with

the likes of Joey Negro.

Dazed and confused

party-goers also found

themselves drifting off into won-

derland with Jelly Jazz and Norman

Jay in Ezmerelda's dreamlike Night

Circus, or heading through the

wardrobe into Narnia where Drop

DJs pounded the crowd into sub-

mission. The vinyl rounds were

being fought out in 45 Live with old

school turntable sets from the likes

of Ollie Teeba, and the Ball threw

open the doors of the VIP tent so

the masses could catch the boxing

on the other side of the Atlantic at

5am, while the party raved on

around them until 6am.

Masked Ball director Kelvin Ball

said: “We are so proud of the dedi-

cated ballers and local crew who

make the ball such a special event,

especially in the weather condi-

tions that really challenged the

event causing some disruption to

venues and running orders.

Every year we learn a little more

about this incredible event site and

we really hope to see you all next

year."

Kelvin added: “Despite bad

weather, we were amazed to have

a fantastic party. We simply cannot

fault the ballers, and the crew, in

their attitude. Everyone excelled

themselves by having a fantastic

time; it really took it to another

level.

“The new traffic plan worked

well and, drawing on past experi-

ences, we’re now more that well-

prepared for the occasional spot of

wet weather.”

So, after going the full 12 rounds,

the Masked Ball showed more

stamina than the pay-day pugilists

at the MGM Grand by getting back

in the ring on the Sunday for a

rematch that saw weary ravers

throwing shapes until the midnight

hour.

While Mayweather may have

retained the undisputed world

champion title over the May Bank

Holiday, the Masked Ball was the

real winner. It showed that it's not

just a contender - it's the real deal,

and continues to punch well above

its weight.

I am grateful to the many people who votedfor me on Thursday 7th May. Being aProspective Parliamentary Candidate wasan enormous privilege and the friendship,trust and support I received has been trulyhumbling, as has the unique opportunity tomeet so many people who have sharedtheir challenges and triumphs with me. Iam deeply grateful for all I have learned andexperienced on this journey thus far.

However, the hard work has just begun.

There are many challenges facing us here in

West Cornwall and on the Isles of Scilly. I also

believe that there are incredible opportunities.

I will work hard in support of the people and

groups who are already working to bring solu-

tions to the problems we face.

As the Conservative Prospective MP I set out

a clear local manifesto and as your MP I will

use the time, skills and influence I have

towards working to deliver this plan.

I said that working to create more skilled

and better paid jobs was the single most

important thing an MP could do to improve

people's quality of life. Already I have contacted

people who offered to help with this and I will

work to make it easier for more local people to

improve their skills and earn decent wages.

This will strengthen our town centres by put-

ting more money in the local economy, as well

as making it easier to buy a home.

I said that I would work tirelessly to bring

health and social care together in meaningful

integration in Cornwall. It is important to me

that people are cared for in the community as

much as possible. We must reduce the demand

on front-line NHS services. This can be

achieved over time but it will depend on all of

us enjoying healthier lives and properly grasp-

ing what is meant when we say 'prevention is

better than cure'.

I have met a number of people who are plan-

ning to train in the nursing profession. I will

work to see what can be done to remove some

of the barriers to nurse training so that more

can be enlisted. The NHS is an incredible

organisation and nursing is a fantastic profes-

sion to be in.

There is more I could write but for now and

in conclusion: the election is over and party

politics put to one side. I welcome the opportu-

nity to work in the best interest of everyone

living in the St Ives Constituency.

such a competitive league.

They finished the season with 22

wins in their 30 fixtures, scoring a

huge 104 goals with top marksman

Mark Goldsworthy netting an aston-

ishing 52 times to beat his own

record by one goal.

They were not expected to be chal-

lenged too hard by bottom side

Perranporth who did however put up

a good display on the day.

Perranporth have had the exact

reverse results this season as they

have taken voluntary relegation after

another season of struggles, only

managing the single win

this year and conceding

107 goals.

Helston were being held for

a long time in the first half

before Charlie Young found

the net and Goldsworthy

added a second.

It came down to substitute

Mikey Davies to get the

final goal, seal the points

and the league champi-

onship.

The final whistle signalled

huge celebrations and the

league chairman Mark

Hayman presented the squad and

management with the trophy and

individual medals as they then set off

for a long weekend of celebrations.
