Elder Scenario andHelpAge India’s contribution

• Today there are estimated 100 million elders– 55 million of them sleep hungry– 30 million live alone– 12 million are blind & cannot afford treatment– 90 million need to work to be able to eat

• In 2030, the elder population is expected to touch 200 million elders, the elder issue deserves even more and urgent action.

• Today, HelpAge is able to reach out to 1.25 million needy elders just over 1% of the 100 million.

HelpAge India• A not-for-profit organization

registered under the Societies' Registration Act of 1860.

• Started from a rented two-room office 35 years back, today HelpAge is spread across 26 States with 90 project offices

• Through its various programmes & services, HelpAge has moved from only welfare to a welfare, development and rights based based organization.

Mobile Medical Units (MMU) – Flagship Programme

• Mobile medical Vans provide free doctor consultations, free medicines and even home visits

• Over 1.7 million treatments through its 81 MMU vans covering 840 locations across India

• This programme has been recognized as Asia’s largest Mobile Medical Programme for the elderly

• ONGC, BHEL, EIL, Asian Paints, BEL, NSIC are few of are major sponsors.• Annual Project cost for running 81 MMUs is Rs 14 crores

Cataract Surgeries

These surgeries help the affected elderly get back to work & earn a living once again, freeing them from financial dependency on anyone, enabling them to live a life of dignity

• HelpAge India has funded over 30,000 cataract surgeries for the needy elderly every year

• Annual Project cost for 30,000 eye surgeries is Rs 3.6 crores

Agecare/ Physiocare Centres

• Infrastructure costs for starting a physiotherapy centre is Rs 2.5 lacs

Supports over 16,000 elders in physiocare centres

across 22 States

Elderly are impacted by the onset of arthritis and other related disease. Physiotherapy restores their ability to work and therefore earn their living.

Health Camps

• For conducting 150 general health camps, annual costs is Rs 75 lacs

• For conducting 50 specialized health camps, annual costs is Rs 75 lacs

200 Health Camps are organized every year in over

22 States covering approximately 800 villages

Health camps focus on preventive health care especially in areas where there is no access to basic healthcare

Cancer and Palliative Care

• HelpAge India provides palliative care to end stage patients suffering from Cancer.

• Minimum Rs 75,000 per patient is required to support for a 3 year period

Last year, over 7500 patients and their families were provided help

Support A Gran

Enables over 30,000 destitute elderly to sustain

themselves with regular supplies of food

rations, clothing and basic healthcare

This program enables these elders live with dignity and independence

Old Age Homes/ Day Care Centres

Over 60 old age homes supported across the country

every year

A roof over their heads is the critical, need of the destitute, the sick and the abandoned, the uprooted by disasters and emergencies.

Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation

• HelpAge has stepped in at every major disaster, delivering specialized relief and rehabilitation measures.

• These range from floods in Assam, Bihar, Odisha, UP, Tsunami in Tamil Nadu to earthquakes in Gujarat and J&K and the recent Uttarakhand Floods.

Livelihood Programmes

Income generation schemes enable otherwise needy elders to set up self help groups to avail micro credit and start commercial enterprises.

It helps them regain their financial independence

Over 3200 Elder Self Help Groups, covering more than 42,000 elders operate across India

Tamaraikulam Elders Village(TEV)

• TEV is a unique rehabilitation project situated on the Cuddalore-Puducherry road, Tamil Nadu, built by HelpAge-NDTV Viewers after the Tsunami in 2004

• Elder victims of the Tsunami devastation were given a safe place to live in a model elder village which provides health care, professional care, livelihood options and recreational facilities.

• The annual cost of supporting the elder village is Rs 75 lacs

Advocacy

• HelpAge advocates for elder rights through its various interventions.

• Raising public awareness, interacting with media, legislators and governments to espouse elder cause is an essential and continuous activity of HelpAge India.

• Works with almost 1000 Senior Citizen Associations across the country

Working with Youth• Student Action for Value Education (SAVE) aims to inculcate

care & respect for elderly through long standing programmes with schools across the country.

• Currently working with 10 lac students across India.

• Trying to include Age Care Values in School Curriculums

Working with Youth• Help Unite Generations (HUG) initiative aims at involving

college students and young professional to engage with elders and keep in regular touch with them, providing them companionship in their lonely, later years.

Working with Government – for Elder-friendlyPolicies and Laws

formulation of the National Policy on Older Persons and the enhancement of the Maintenance & Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act (2007)

• Sensitizing legislators and governments in States and Centre has resulted in HelpAge India contributing significantly to the

AdvantAge Card Programme for Active Ageing

• It helps card holders to stretch household budgets, especially of those elder citizens living on limited/ fixed incomes.

• Currently it has over 1.3 lakh members in over 200 towns & cities across India

• This Benefit Card Programme encourages elder to be physically active as the discount card requires their visiting to the retail outlets themselves.

AdvantAge Centres

• Each center can be supported by a one-time capital expenditure of Rs 3.5 lacs

• Urban elders face loneliness and isolation.• AdvantAge Centres provide like-minded elders with the space to

come together and means to engage in socially useful productive work.

Outcome: elders perceive themselves as useful contributors to society, regain self confidence, live happy, healthy lives.
