6 July 2017
A new morning ‘huddle’ to exchange information
and bring teams together is making a big
difference in our Emergency Department.
Head of ED A/Prof Reza Ali said it’s early days but
the progress have been “very encouraging”.
“The huddle is a quick team get-together every
morning at 8am in the emergency department,”
Reza said.
“We keep it short and sharp so we can quickly
bring everyone up-to-date on the patient flow,
transfers and discharges, and important clinical
information.”
Reza emphasised that the huddle is for all staff in
the ED - nursing, medical, support staff and allied
health.
“It was hard to do before because we were relying
on emails or briefings. With the regular huddle, it’s
consistent, everyone gets the same message,
everyone is involved and we get more meaningful
clinician involvement.”
It’s been a big change, but he is confident that in a
few more weeks the huddle will be business-as-
usual in the unit.
“Staff appreciate it because they feel engaged.
They are part of the solution and can see the
positive impact on patient care,” Reza said.
“Project RED is a whole-of-hospital approach, but if
we can do our part in emergency to make it better
for staff and patients, it’s five minutes well spent
every day.”
