HELLO CAMPERS,We would like to invite and warmly welcome new and returning Campers to all the activities we have planned for Camp Mayacama 2014! Summer days are fun days at Camp Mayacama and this year promises to be the best yet! We will have Tennis Clinics and Swimming Clinics every weekday (yes, even Tuesdays) through August 15th! Since these clinics are scheduled before and after themed camps and field trips, it’s possible for you to add tennis and/or swimming to your, already exciting day. New this year, we’ve added a classic style camp called “Summer Fun” on most every Monday and Tuesday through August 12th.

Browse through our camp schedule and see how many events you can attend. With such a huge variety of themed camps, workshops, and field trips to choose from, there is something for everyone on most days from June 16 - August 16. In order to participate in any or all of these activities, have your parents either call me, email me, or log on to the Members Only Website and register you to join in on the fun, friends, thrills, intrigue, and excitement all summer long!

GET READY TO BE INSPIRED!

WILD WEST PUPPET SHOWMayacama Clubhouse Kids’ Play RoomSaturday, June 2110:00 am – 2:00 pm2:00 pm - Show for the parents!

The life and times of Davy Crockett will come alive in this action packed adventure of tall tails and a puppet theater. In a tribute to the folklore that surrounds this historical hero, we will create puppets to chronicle one of his many adventures as Davy saves the world. The real Davy Crockett (1786-1836) was a famous frontiers-man, hunter, scout, and quick-witted storyteller from Tennessee who became a member of Congress and died defending the Alamo. So thoroughly did he capture the public imagination that, between 1835-1855, a series of comic almanacs rigged to look like they were written by Crockett himself, became big best-sellers! Sandwiched between information about stars, tides, and the weather were outrageous drawings and tall tales about Davy Crockett by people who didn’t give a hoot about the facts. The story that we will recreate was written in the spirit of these almanacs and promises to stir together a concoction of events and phrases found therein.

GLASS FUSION WORKSHOP FIELD TRIPMeet at Mayacama Swim & Tennis CenterWednesday – Friday, July 16 – 1810:00 am – 2:00 pm

We will travel to the studio of Jennifer Balletto in Sebastopol to explore the world of glass fusion. Referred to as “warm glass”, glass fusion is one of the oldest forms of glass making. Instead of blowing the glass, kilns are used to make the glass molten. Each piece begins with hand-cut, broken, pulled and ground pieces of glass. These pieces of glass are then designed in a layered manner and through a series of firings (temperatures ranging from 1,200-1,500 degrees) a new piece of glass is formed. Glass is an extraordinary medium for artistic expression; you won’t believe your eyes when you see the amazing projects that your child will produce in this workshop. Projects will be available for pick-up the following week. Projects may be shipped upon request.

KIDVETS CAMPMayacama Swim & Tennis CenterMonday & Tuesday, July 28 & 2910:00 am – 2:00 pm

Indulge your child’s love of animals and science with a summer camp that explores veterinary medicine in a fun and imaginative setting! KidVets provides an in-depth exploration of all things veterinary. Children learn how veterinarians interact with their patients and how veterinarians use science, math, and their observational skills to help pets recover from illnesses and stay healthy. Scientific models, demonstrations, and live animal guests make for a rich, hands-on experience that brings science and veterinary medicine to life for future vets and animal lovers. Children apply their knowledge with lessons in exam skills, record keeping, surgery, animal handling, bandaging, vaccinations, grooming, x-ray, first aid, laboratory skills, microchips, pharmacy calculations, and more!

Dr. Pam Wittenberg has over 25 years of experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Her academic career took her to US Berkeley and Duke University, where she studied animal behavior, paleontology, and anatomy. At UC Davis she received her veterinary degree in small animal medicine. She has taught and tutored undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, but find children to be the most enthusiastic and inspiring students. When she’s not teach kids about animals and science, she works at Four Seasons Animal Hospital in Lafayette.

SOAP MAKING & FELTING FIELD TRIPMeet at the Mayacama Swim & Tennis CenterSaturday, August 1610:00 am – 2:00 pm

We will travel to Three Sister’s Apothecary where they have been creating artisan soap since 1999. Their handcrafted bar soaps are made in the time honored tradition of the first soap guilds of 7th century Europe. Now, just as it was then, each bar is handmade in small batches with only natural botanicals, pure essential and vegetable oils. From the early recipes coveted by these guilds, these beneficial ingredients nourish and support skin on a daily basis.

The history of soap begins with the first soap makers: the Babylonians, Mesopotamians, Egyptians, ancient Greeks, and Romans. The Ebers Papyrus (1550BC) documents revealed that the ancient Egyptians produced a soap-like substance to treat skin diseases and to wash with. The word sapo, Latin for soap, first appeared in Pliny the Elder’s Historia Naturalis in 600BC. Ancient ruins at Pompeii revealed a soap factory complete with finished bars. Early Romans, well known for their public baths, made soap in the first century. During the 14th Century soap was so heavily taxed that it was something that only the rich could afford. History will come alive as we revisit ancient practice of artisan soap making.
