Textile printing is the process of applying colour to fabric in definite patterns or

designs. In properly printed fabrics the colour is bonded with the fiber, so as to

resist washing and friction. Textile printing is related to dyeing but in dyeing

properly the whole fabric is uniformly covered with one colour, whereas in

printing one or more colours are applied to it in certain parts only, and in

sharply defined patterns.

In printing, wooden blocks, stencils, engraved plates, rollers, or silkscreens

can be used to place colours on the fabric. Colorants used in printing contain

dyes thickened to prevent the colour from spreading by capillary attraction

beyond the limits of the pattern or design.

Digital Textile Printing

Is described as any ink jet based method of printing colorants onto fabric.

Most notably, digital textile printing is referred to when identifying either

printing smaller designs onto garments (t-shirts, dresses, promotional wear;

abbreviated as DTG, which stands for Direct to Garment) and printing larger

designs onto large format rolls of textile.

The latter is a growing trend in visual communication, where advertisement

and corporate branding is printed onto polyester media. Examples are: flags,

banners, signs, retail graphics.

Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made

using this technique. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the

resist with a spouted tool called a canting or by printing the resist with a

copper stamp called a cap The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows

the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing

the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colours are desired.

Woodblock printing on textiles is the process of printing patterns on textiles,

usually of linen, cotton or silk, by means of incised wooden blocks. It is the

earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing. Block printing

by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic

results, some of which are unobtainable by any other method.
