HEBREWS Lesson One INTRODUCTION: 1. AUTHOR: There is no name mentioned in the book as to who the author is, but many think the Apostle Paul wrote it. 2. DATE: about 66 or 67 A.D. 3. PURPOSE: The primary purpose of the author of Hebrews was to persuade his Hebrew brethren in Christ to persevere to the end in the course they had begun as Christians, and not to fall back again to Judaism ( Heb. 10: 35 - 39). 4. These Hebrew Christians had to face the same spirit of envy and malice which had moved the unbelieving Jews to put to death the Lord ( Heb. 10:34; Gal. 4:29). 5. This persecution was very discouraging to the Hebrew Christians ( Heb. 12: 12 - 13). 6. This letter was to help those Christians who were about to fall away from the faith ( Heb. 3: 12 - 13; 6: 4 - 6; 10: 24 - 31). a. This letter is "the word of exhortation" ( Heb. 13:22). 7. In this epistle the writer clearly demonstrates the superiority of the new covenant over the old covenant. 8. The writer shows that the gospel plan is really the only plan by which any sinner can be saved. 9. The book of Hebrews is preeminently a book of motives: a. "Motive" defined: that which incites to action. b. There are many things in Hebrews to motivate us to do our duty. 10. There are key words used that we need to study in order to better understand the book: a. The word "better" b. The admonition "let us" I. WE WILL FIRST STUDY THE WORD "BETTER". 1. Christ is a better spokesman than angels (Heb. 1:4). a. The law was spoken by angels (Heb. 2:2; Gal. 3:19; Acts 7:53). (1) Moses was the mediator of the law ( Gal. 3:20). (2) God spoke to angels, angels spoke to Moses, and Moses gave the law to Israel. b. The gospel was spoken by Christ, God's Son (Heb. 1:2).

(1) God spoke to Christ (Heb. 1:2), Christ spoke to the Holy Spirit (John 16:13), and the Holy Spirit to the apostles and prophets ( Eph. 3:5) who wrote this revelation down for us today ( I John 5:13; Eph. 3: 3 - 4). 2. "We are persuaded better things of you" (Heb. 6:9). a. The writer had warned them about not growing and bearing fruit and apostasy ( Heb. 6: 1 - 8). 3. We have a better High Priest ( Heb. 7:7). a. Christ is a priest after the order of Melchisedec ( Heb. 7:17). b. He lived a sinless life ( Heb. 4:15). c. He has an endless life ( Heb. 7: 16 - 17). d. Aaron was made priest "without an oath", but Christ was made priest "with an oath" (Heb. 7:12; Psa. 110: 4). e. The Levites offered daily sacrifices for themselves first and then for the people (Heb. 7:27); Christ did not have to offer sacrifices for Himself -- He had no sin (Heb. 4:15). He was once offered "to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" ( Heb. 9: 26; 7: 26 - 27). 4. We have a better hope (Heb. 7: 19). 5. We "have in heaven a better and an enduring substance" (Heb. 10:34; I Pet. 1:4; Matt. 6: 19 - 21). 6. We have a "better testament" ( Heb. 7: 22); a "better covenant" ( Heb. 8: 6). 7. We have a "better sacrifice" ( Heb. 9: 23). 8. We are going to a "better country" (Heb. 11:16; John 4: 1 - 6). 9. A "better resurrection" (Heb. 11: 35; John 5: 28 - 29; I Cor. 15: 50 - 57). 10. God has provided some "better thing for us" (Heb. 11:40; Heb. 8:6). 11. Better blood (Heb. 12: 24). a. Abel's blood cried for vengeance (Gen. 4:10). b. Christ's blood calls for mercy (Heb. 2:9; Eph. 1:7).

II. WE WILL NOW LOOK AT THE ADMONITION, "LET US".

1. "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it" ( Heb. 4:1). 2. "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief" (Heb. 4:11). 3. "Let us hold fast our profession" (confession, Heb. 4:14). 4. "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Heb. 4:16).

Page 4: HEBREWS book by Donald Townsleygreatplainnessofspeech.weebly.com/uploads/2/2/0/8/...6. This letter was to help those Christians who were about to fall away from the faith ( Heb. 3:

~ 4 ~

5. "Let us go on unto perfection;" (Heb. 6:1) 6. "Let us draw near" (to God -- Heb. 10:22). 7. "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering" (Heb. 10:23). 8. "Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works;" (Heb. 10:24). 9. "Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us" (Heb. 12:1). 10. "Let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Heb. 12:1). 11. "Let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and fear:" (Heb.12:1). 12. Let us go forth therefore unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach" (Heb. 13: 13). 13. "Let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name" (Heb. 13:15).
