Heatwave!
The
I’m writing this during our July heatwave, iced
water at the ready. Temperatures are soaring,
the grass is turning yellow and we’ve got
beyond just saying that a bit of rain would be
‘good for the garden’ and are now positively
crying out for a thunderstorm! It’s hard to
remember that 6 months ago it was freezing
cold, and during services and concerts in the
church we could see
our breath and were
shivering! The water
in the font didn’t
quite freeze over
during Baptisms, but
we probably weren’t
far away. All this was
due to our heating
system breaking
down last year. For
those of you that
came to services and
concerts during the
Winter, you’ll remember that we had our
‘rocket heaters’ blowing instead – these made
an incredible noise and were rather
inefficient, but did the job in getting us
through the Winter. However, the church
needed to start looking towards a
permanent solution.
With this is mind, in September our heating
contractor will be coming in to fit a brand
new heating system in St Michael’s Church.
This will cost a total of £65,000 – a huge
amount of money for St. Michael’s to raise.
This is quite a scary prospect!
Our regular churchgoers have been hugely
generous so far in donating money to this
project, which has paid for around a quarter
of the total, and we
have also managed to
acquire a small grant
of around £2000. We
have worked really
hard with regards to
fundraising too, in
trying to raise more
money towards the
total. However, the
bulk of the cost is still
to come.
As a Church, we already struggle to pay our
costs and these rise year-on-year. The Church
gets no outside help: no money from the
Government, Council or anything else – we
simply rely on donations and fees from
services. St Michael’s Church has stood as a
key part of this community for almost 100
years, we want to ensure that it will stand for
at least another 100!

Without the new heating system, we would be unable to put on
the concerts, art exhibitions, children’s clubs, Sunday services,
Funerals, Baptisms and Weddings that we currently do. We seek
to serve this community, not just through our services on
Sunday, but our other events; we’re also here to visit the sick,
comfort the bereaved and help those in need. Through our
concerts and exhibitions, we’re an artistic hub for the
community too. Our own congregation have worked so hard,
and given so much, but we’ve raised as much as we can
ourselves. Now we need your help! If you’ve ever had a family
Wedding, Baptism or Funeral at the Church; if you ever come to
sit in the Church for a quiet moment; if you’ve attended
Christmas or Easter services; if you’ve come to concerts or
exhibitions; if your children have been to our groups and
events; if St Michael’s has played a part in your life; if you value
the presence of the Church in your community – we’d invite
you to write a sentence on why you value St Michael’s Church
and send a donation to our Heating Fund to: St Michael’s
Vicarage, 117 Penhill Road, Lancing, BN15-8HD (cheques can
be made payable to ‘St Michael and All Angels’). You can also
donate online at https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/
stmichaelandallangels. The best of these comments will
appear in the next edition of The Net. It doesn’t matter how
small the donation may be, if the community comes together
and pays small amounts it will make a big difference!
We need your help to ensure to continued the survival of
St Michael’s Church. Then, when we get to Winter, you can
come into the Church, we’ll turn on the heating and you can
enjoy another heatwave!
Father Felix Smith
I have lived in North Lancing with my
husband Dan and 4 children, George,
Alfie, Ned and Kitty, in a house
owned by Lancing College since my
husband starting working for the
College 13 years ago.
I work as a preschool teacher, which I
love, as I adore small children and I
love playing a part in their growth
and development and helping to
make them feel safe when they start
with us, as often they have never
been away from their main caregiver
before. They can be so funny and
sweet and no two days are ever
the same!
I have recently read ‘The Prodigal God’ by the American pastor
Timothy Keller. His book looks very closely at the parable of
the prodigal son and what it tells us about God’s grace, hope
and salvation. I found it really helpful.
I started coming to St Michael and All Angels in April last year.
We had been travelling to a large church in Brighton for a few
years and a church in Ashington before that but became
increasingly frustrated with living so far away from the central
church community, which made meaningful involvement quite
difficult. Coming to St Michael’s has felt like coming home for
me. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and I feel like
we’ve been embraced with open arms.
Knowing that I am loved and accepted by God, and the greater
knowledge I have of this since coming to St Michael’s has
encouraged me to get involved in order that others may feel
this love for themselves. I have joined the Parochial Church
Council, helped out at various events as well as in our young
children’s group ‘Alive’, which is great fun. My 7 year old
daughter, Kitty, has also embraced her roles in church as a
server, lesson reader and as a founding member of ‘Alive’!
I love so many hymns and worship songs it would be hard to
pick my favourite but ‘Sing out my
Soul’ would have to be one as it
always makes me cry.
I love running, yoga, reading, sewing,
knitting, horse riding, drawing and
painting but with 4 children and my
job I don’t get much time for many
of them!
God definitely speaks to me when
I’m by the sea. Its huge expanse, its
ever-changing colour and sound and
its beauty always touches my soul. I
run down there early most mornings
and sit alone for a few minutes to
pray and to calm my mind for the
almost always manic day ahead!
Unsurprisingly, I’m my happiest at the beach, in church and
amongst people I love and feel safe with.
All my children make me laugh but are also capable of making
me cry!
My favourite bible verse is Zephaniah 3 verse 17:
“The Lord your God is with you,
he is mighty to save
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with his love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”
It never fails to remind me that we are all wanted by God and
precious to him, whatever we may think of ourselves.
I’m afraid of lots of things, often surrounding what other
people think of me, so being asked to do this interview and
open up a bit has been very scary!
Something that may surprise you by looking at me is that I’m
actually pretty good at arm wrestling!

Rise is a new group at St Michael’s Church for
children and teenagers from Year 6 upwards.
The group is about faith, friendship and fun.
Our first meeting will be on Saturday 13
October, from 6.30 – 8pm at St Michael’s
Church Hall and will involve pizza, games and
getting to know each other.
It is hoped that the youngsters will welcome
the opportunity to meet up with other young
Christians from across the Diocese at the
annual May Camp and then to investigate a
week long camp in Norfolk at the Walsingham
Youth Pilgrimage in August.
Meetings will take place every other month on
a Saturday night and will involve food! We are
asking for a small contribution of £1 per
person to help cover the cost. To find out
more, please contact Fr Felix by email
[email protected], telephone
01903 753653 or turn up on the night.

All Rise for new youth group
The Boundstone Chorus have an exciting year ahead which will
see us performing new works by two professional composers
both celebrating the history
of the local area, in addition
to some other great music.
We start on Saturday 6
October by joining with the
Worthing Philharmonic
Orchestra (WPO) in the
Assembly Hall for Rule
Britannia. It is Worthing’s very
own Last Night of the Proms
as we perform all the prom
favourites from Land of Hope
and Glory through to Rule
Britannia plus much more.
Everyone is encouraged to
bring their flags and their best
singing voice for an unforgettable evening of pomp and
ceremony.
On Saturday 3 November we’ll be performing A Night at the
Opera in St Michael’s. It will be a programme of favourite arias,
duets and choruses from the most loved composers of all time,
including Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Puccini and more. Whether you’re
a seasoned opera buff, enjoy fantastic live music, or have
always wondered what opera is all about, this concert is
for you.
On Saturday 22 December we’ll present our much-loved
Christmas Celebration which we know for many people in
Lancing starts their Christmas. There’ll be carols for all to join in
and some great music to get you ready for Christmas, plus the
celebration is followed by a feast in the Church Hall!
March 2019 will see us back with the Worthing Philharmonic
Orchestra to celebrate their 70th Anniversary. In collaboration
with The Boundstone Chorus, Worthing Choral Society and
Sompting Village Primary School the WPO have commissioned
composer James Olsen to write a piece especially for their
anniversary. Premiering on Saturday 23 March, The Line is
Immaterial: a Worthing Oratorio will be a celebration of
community music in Worthing, and will set to music a montage
of Worthing-related texts. The title is drawn from Wilde’s The
Importance of Being Earnest, written in Worthing. Don’t miss
this great event which also includes Beethoven’s Choral
Symphony.
Our summer performance
involves another first for the
Chorus as we have
commiss ioned composer
Christopher Hussey to write a
new community musical, Dead
Men Don’t Tell Tales, based on
the heritage of local smuggling.
The words have been written by
good friend of the Chorus,
Charlie Olsen. Students from
Sompting Village Primary
School and Sir Robert Woodard
Academy will also be involved.
We don’t have a date for the
performance as of yet so keep
your eyes open for posters, Facebook posts or visit our website
(see below) for further updates.
Plans for later 2019 include a performance of David Fanshawe’s
great African Sanctus which is an unorthodox setting of the
Latin Mass harmonised with traditional African music recorded
by the composer on his now legendary journeys up the River
Nile (1969-73). We’ll also be performing Alexander L’Estrange’s
Freedom! The Power of Song which marks four important
landmarks in the struggle for freedom: the centenary of the
end of World War I, 100 years since some women first were
allowed to vote, 50 years since the American Civil Rights
movement and 25 years since the Baltic 'singing revolution'. It’s
so new it hasn’t been premiered by the composer yet!
We’re always looking to welcome new singers and we hope
that this programme looks exciting and challenging. If you’d
like to join us to sing please telephone 01903 762793 or email
[email protected] for further details. Singing
is a lot of fun and has proven health benefits.
We also need good audiences for all of our performances. Visit
www.theboundstonechorus.co.uk for ticket details or contact
the Box Office.
We’re looking forward to some great music-making this year!

Apple and Sultana Chutney
Ingredients
7lbs of cooking apples peeled, cored
and sliced
2pts pickling vinegar
3lbs granulated sugar
8oz crystalised ginger chopped
1lb sultanas
1tsp ground mixed spice
1tsp cayenne
1tsp salt
Method
Put apples in pan with a little of the
pickling vinegar and simmer to a
thick pulp. Then add rest of the
ingredients but not the vinegar and
simmer for 20 minutes.
Stir in vinegar and cook until required
consistency.
Once cooked spoon into sterilised
jars. Do not put lid on jars until
mixture has cooled. Leave for a week
to mature.
To sterilise jars either wash in
dishwasher and leave to cool or wash
in hot water and leave to dry in a
warm oven.
Summertime in your garden
At the time of writing, it is August and
the lengthy period of intense heat seems
to have abated. The roses in the Church
garden, having really appreciated the wet
spring months, are wondering whether to
repeat flower or not; they have been
pretty parched now for some weeks. The
“Guiding Promise” clematis flowered well
this year, as did the new honeysuckle,
and the fuschias came
back after last year’s
disease.
Some summer flowering
annuals at home died a
death in the heat;
although we had no
specific hose ban,
certainly daily watering
became a past habit.
Such situations bring
home to us the benefits
of having larger shrubs that can stand up
to droughts, torrents and blizzards!
What is left of the lawns? Not a lot, but
no need to invest in fake grass just yet –
natural order will return and so,
unfortunately, will the weeds! A little care
and all will be well in the flower borders
and lawns, and we can enjoy perusing
the gardening magazines and making
plans for next year.
One thing I have noticed in the garden
centres this year : so many more new
plants and varieties. Interesting to see
but, if your soil is not up to scratch, don’t
spend too much money on being a
pioneer! The best way to check the
condition of soil is to invest in a soil
tester. These little kits are readily
available and easy to use. Then you can
ensure that you have the right plants for
your conditions.
If you have a greenhouse,
late September through
to early November is the
best time to have a clear
out and thorough clean,
before you bring in any
tender perennials for the
winter. Get into every little
corner where pests
hibernate and lay eggs,
and don’t forget to scrub
out pots and clean tools.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness, as my
mother used to say!
As soon as the nights draw in and
temperatures fall, consider early winter
digging, incorporating if possible organic
matter from a compost heap. When
spring comes you will be able to break
down the soil more easily to sow and
plant, ready for another show of produce
and decorative specimens next year!
