A traditional radiator system often createsdraughts, leading to the warmest air beingclose to the ceiling and colder air on the floor. They also provide an obstacle to laying outyour furniture in just the way you want it.

With Heat Mat underfloor heating draughtsare minimised as the heat is evened out acrossyour entire floor. The warm air slowly risesproviding increased comfort and you can havecomplete flexibility in placing your furniture.

More efficient AND more effective!

Underfloor heating is a very effective way to warma room in comparison to radiators or panel heaters.Radiators and panel heaters usually create draughtswhich lead to rooms heating unevenly and thewarmest air being trapped at ceiling height.

Underfloor heating uses the entire floor as a heaterensuring draughts are minimised as the warm airgently rises. The temperature just above the floorsurface remains warmer than the air at ceiling height, ensuring you do not ‘waste’ energy providing warmthwhere you do not need it.

The majority of people feel more comfortableliving with an underfloor heating system thanthey did with conventional radiators or panelheaters and often drop the room temperaturedown by a few degrees, making further savingson energy usage.

Our underfloor heating systems are more than 99%energy efficient compared to gas boilers that areoften as little as 75% efficient, and thermostaticallycontrolling each room individually further increasesthe system’s efficiency.

Finally, with electric underfloor heating thereare no ongoing maintenance costs bringingdown the real cost of ownership over the lifeof the system when compared to using a gasboiler with its required maintenance regime.

For more information on usingyour system in the most energyefficient way please call uson 01444 247020.

Technical supportFrom the inception of your project to helping youprogramme your thermostat just the way youwant it Heat Mat are there every step of the way.

Lifetime Warranties that mean somethingMany companies offer warranties with theirsystems but those warranties are worth nothingif the company providing them no longer exists.By purchasing from Heat Mat, rather than a smallonline company, you are ensuring if you requirecustomer support in the future there will besomeone there to help.

Quality and continuity of productsIn these times of numerous product recallsof foreign manufactured products we continueto manufacture all our underfloor heatingproducts in Denmark and the UK.This guarantees their consistent high quality.

Independent approvalsRather than simply claim to have high qualityand safe products, at Heat Mat we prove thiswith independent approvals from BEAB, VDE,Kema and Semko.

Fair pricesHeat Mat products are consistently less expensivethan our competitors products of a similar highquality. Additionally, unlike some websites thatuse dubious tactics to trick the consumer for exampleby offering 30% off their retail price year in year out,we offer simple competitive pricing all the time.

Underfloor heatingand sustainable living

Electric underfloor heating can provide avery energy efficient and environmentallyfriendly form of heating when installed andused in the correct way. There are a numberof actions you can take to ensure that yourheating system runs in as energy efficientmanner as possible and some of oursuggestions are listed below:

Installation considerationsWhen deciding on which system you are goingto install the following actions will ensure itcan run as efficiently as possible:

Placing our 20mm insulation boards directly beneathyour heating system will significantly decrease thewarm up time and prevents downward heat loss, benefiting your pocket and the environment. 10mmand 6mm boards can also be supplied if you arerestricted for build height.

Use a separate programmable thermostat ineach room so that each area stops heatingwhen it reaches the desired temperature.

If installing a system beneath tiles use a 200W/sqmsystem instead of a 160W/sqm system. This willensure the warm up time of the system is minimisedallowing the system to run more efficiently.

Carbon neutral power supplyAlthough all Heat Mat underfloor heating systemscan be powered by micro-generation devices, these usually cost in the region of £3,000/€4,000per installed kilowatt and many properties are notsuitable for installing photovoltaic cells or a windturbine. A good alternative is to purchase yourelectricity from one of the many companies offering, for a small premium, to supply you with power from100% renewable sources.

Thermostat settingsBy reducing the target temperature on yourthermostat by just one degree you can makea significant difference to the amount of powerused. Additionally, ensure that your thermostat onlyheats the floor when you require it. If the system isin a room you only use at the weekend ensure thatit is set to only heat on Saturday and Sunday.

The thermostat has an intelligent adaptive functionthat utilises ‘fuzzy logic’ to learn when to switch yoursystem on. If you enable this function, and tell thethermostat when you require your room to be heatedby, it will take into account how long it takes to heatyour floor and adapt it’s start and end time suitablythroughout the year.

Living with your systemIf you find that your heating system makes the roomtoo hot, rather than opening a window or door simplycall us on 01444 247020 and we will help youprogram your thermostat just the way you want it.

Frequently asked questionsHow long will it take for the heatingsystem to warm up?The warm up time of a heating system will be dictatedby the insulation used beneath it and the output ofthe system. In general, the better insulated thesub-floor, the faster the system will warm up. Systemsinsulated with Thermal Insulation Boards offer a veryspeedy warm up time of as little as 15 minutes, andun-insulated concrete offers the slowest warm uptime. Using a 200W system beneath ceramic/stonetiles provides a faster warm up time than 150Wor 160W systems. We recommend using ThermalInsulation Boards wherever practical when installingour systems especially onto concrete floors.

How much will it cost to run?The cost of running your system is based around manydifferent factors so it is hard to generalise. When oursystems are used in well insulated internal rooms wewould expect them to cost up to £6.48/€14.68 to runper square meter per annum, and in conservatoriesup to £9.44/€21.32 per annum. This should be moreefficient than any other electric form of heating andwill often be cheaper than a radiator system.

These costs are based on a unit price of electricityof 8p in the UK and 18.2€cents in Ireland. Both examples assume rooms insulated up to thecurrent building regulations, that the systems are laiddirectly onto suitable insulation and controlled by ourCPS thermostat set to 20 degrees. The first exampleassumes a 200W/sqm system heating the room for135 days per annum, ten hours a day and supplyingpower 30% of the time. The conservatory exampleassumes a 200W/sqm system heating the room for210 days a year, eight hours a day and supplyingpower 35% of the time.

The only things which significantly affect the costof running one system compared to another are theinsulation used beneath the system, the output ofthe system and the use of an intelligent thermostat. In general, the better the insulation used beneath

it (and in the room), and the higher the output ofthe system, the cheaper it will be to run providedit is used with an intelligent thermostat likeHeat Mat’s CPS thermostat/timer.

What does a BEAB system approval mean?Unlike CE marking, which is a non-independentself-certificate, BEAB system approvals are completelyindependent. A system approval, such as Heat Mathave on their heating mats, means that BEAB(the British Electrotechnical Approvals Board) haveindependently verified and tested the heating matswith Heat Mat’s thermostats and they have confirmedthat the system is safe and suitable for use asunderfloor heating and that it complies with allnecessary legislation. All of our heating mats, cablesand thermostats are manufactured in BEAB approvedfactories and are BEAB approved.

Which is more expensive to run,160W or 200W heating mats?If the system is used with the thermostats adaptivefunction switched on then the 200W system willbe slightly cheaper to use than the 160W system. This is due to the warm up time of the 200Wsystem being slightly faster.

Does each room require its own thermostat? We would recommend that each room has its ownheating system controlled by its own thermostat. This will allow for simpler and more accuratetemperature control of each room and will avoidheating rooms which do not require it.

Can I tile straight onto heating matsand 3mm cables?Yes you can tile straight onto heating mats and 3mmcables as long as you use a flexible tile adhesive andensure that all of the heating cables are thoroughlycovered. When installing a system in this way thetiler should take particular care not to damagethe heating cable when cleaning out grout lines.
