Welcome to the HeartSmart Walks programme for

February to May 2020

February 2016 to May 2016

These walks are led by Volunteer Walk Leaders and are designed to cater for all ages

and abilities. The walks offer opportunities to exercise and meet new people in a

safe and friendly environment.

If you would like to be informed about walk cancellations and changes then please

email us at: [email protected] and we can add you to our HeartSmart

mailing list.

All walks finish at their starting point unless otherwise stated.

No booking is required but please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to start.

Please inform the Walk Leader if you will be leaving the walk early and sign out.

We recommend always bringing a mobile phone with the number below stored in

case of emergency.

Please wear footwear suitable for country walks and you may like to bring a drink of

water.

Please note that the walks are smoke free.

Dogs are welcome on walks unless otherwise stated but must be kept on the lead.

Timings and distances stated on the programme are approximate.

If the weather is poor the walk may be cancelled. Please check with the office or

website if unsure (office hours Mon-Fri 8.45am-5pm).

Please read the walk description before joining the walk and ensure you are walking

at the right level for you.

L: Helen M: Sarah Time: 30mins Distance: 1 mile. A flat walk at a gentle pace, suitable for beginners. Meet: Chichester Canal, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT. By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station.

Mon 3rd Feb - 10.30am BOXGROVE

L: Peter Br M: Time: 2 Hours Distance: 2.5 mile Flat circular walk past Boxgrove Priory and through surrounding fields. Meet: Car park at the Village Hall in Boxgrove PO18 0EE. By Car: Heading out of Chichester along A27 Arundel road, at first roundabout take first exit to Boxgrove. Church hall on left towards end of the village.

Mon 3rd Feb – 2pm *HEATHLANDS REUNITED HEALTHY HEATH WALK*

MIDHURST MEANDER

L: Angela M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 2.25 miles. A pleasant wander through Midhurst Common and adjacent land, enjoying heathland and woodland habitats. We might spot some rare heathland species on the way. Meet: Carron Lane Car Park. Grid reference SU 87768 21427. Nearest postcode GU29 9LD. By Car: At the Midhurst end of the A272 Petersfield Road turn off on to Carron Lane (left if you are coming from Midhurst and right if you are coming from Petersfield). This is a small residential lane so please be careful of parked cars and oncoming traffic. This leads up to the recreation ground and cemetery car park. Meet in the car park. Tue 4th Feb - 11am

L: Harvey and Jon M: Time: 30mins Distance: 1 mile. A flat walk at a gentle pace with a small bridge over the pond. A steady incline to the top of the jubilee path with benches to sit and rest along the way. Meet: The Grange Leisure Centre, Bepton Road, Midhurst, GU29 9HD. Free 2 hr parking at the Grange. A ticket has to be obtained and displayed on your windscreen even for the

Tue 4th Feb – 2pm EMSWORTH HARBOUR

L: Helen M: Keith Time/Distance: 1 hour/3 miles (longer walk), 30 minutes/1 mile (shorter walk) Come along to enjoy a picturesque walk from the New Life Christian Church car park, through Emsworth Yacht Club, out along the embankment onto the Thorney Island West Coast footpath. There is a gentle slope onto the footpath, but the rest is a firm, stony footpath, taking in views over beautiful Emsworth Harbour, salt marshes and the seabirds. There is also a narrow footpath which although higher and more exposed takes in stunning views across the harbour towards Emsworth. Meet: The New Life Christian Church car park and back to the church hall for a chat, cup of tea and cake. By Car: From A259 turn onto Thorney Road, Emsworth, drive 100 meters down a lane and the church is well signposted. At the end of the drive is the car park. Post code PO10 8BN. By Bus: 700 bus stop is 100 metres away on the main road (A259).

Wed 5th Feb - 10:30am CHICHESTER MARINA TO DELL QUAY

L: Peter and Alison M: Time: 1hr 30mins Distance: 3.5 miles. An easy flat walk through Saltern Copse and across farmland. Will be muddy if it's rained recently. Meet: Free visitors' car park at Chichester Marina By car: A286 south of Chichester towards The Witterings. After about 2 miles, turn right into Chichester Marina - the visitors' car park is the first one you come to on the right. By bus: No 52 or 53 from Chichester to The Witterings. Ask for the Chichester Marina stop.

Weds 5th Feb– 10.30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED HEALTHY HEATH WALK* HEYSHOTT HIKE

L: Abbi M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: No more than 5 miles. Join a National Park ranger to explore the countryside around Heyshott. Focussing on the heathland and its wildlife/history, these walks will vary in route but will stay under 5 miles. Suitable for trampers and off-road pushchairs or those that could be carried over obstacles, but not suitable for wheelchairs due to boggy, uneven ground. Dogs on leads welcome. Meet: Heyshott Common car park SU 91211 19419 / GU29 0BY. By Car: From the A286 heading towards Midhurst from Chichester, turn right onto Bex Lane. Continue on this road for around 3.5km until Hoyle crossroads (Where Hoyle Lane and New Road cross), and turn left. The car park is approximately 500m on the left. From the A272 heading towards Midhurst from Petworth, turn left onto New Road (first left after Halfway Bridge). Continue for 3km and the car park is on the right.

Thurs 6th Feb – 10am *10AM START* WALDERTON TO COMPTON

L: Jane M: Pete D Time: Distance: 5 miles. This linear walk is through woods and fields and finishes in Compton village. Three steep climbs with some gentle slopes and stiles. There should be opportunity for a refreshment break at the village teashop before catching the bus to return to Walderton. Please bring money/bus pass. There is the opportunity for a longer walk should anyone wish to walk back to Walderton via a different route. No dogs on this walk please. Meet: At the junction of the B2146 and the Walderton/Stoughton Road - where parking is available on the grass verge.

L: Peter B M: Pete D Time: 2 hrs Distance: 4 mile circular walk up Nore Hill, through Eartham village and along a lesser known “atmospheric” section of Stane Street. Meet: Free Forestry Commission car park on the right, ¾ of a mile north of The George PH at Eartham. Map ref SU938106. PO18 0LU By Car: Take A27 Chichester bypass towards Arundel. Half a mile before Fontwell turn left following signs to Eartham, after Z bend pass The George PH and continue north to Forestry Commission car park. Alternatively take the A285 Petworth road from Chichester with sharp right turn towards Eartham with car park soon after on the left.

SU963 220 By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272 then in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking is available in the road. Tue 11th Feb – 10.30am *NEW WALK* STEDHAM SAUNTERS

L: Kate Time: 2 hrs Distance: No more than 3 miles A series of walks under 5km that take in the stunning heathland scenery around Stedham. All walks will leave from the Wildlife Trust car park and cover uneven, boggy ground so sturdy boots and walking poles are encouraged. Walks will finish no later than 12.30pm. By Bus: Iping Lane bus stop, served by the 92 bus. By Car: Head West out of Midhurst on the A272, take a left turn onto Elsted Rd and drive about 200m up the hill. At the top of the slope the car park is on the right with a height barrier. Parking is free but leave valuables at home as this is a known break-in site. Alternatively you could park in the village of Stedham and walk up to the car park. Wed 12th Feb - 10:45am *10:45 START* CLIMPING

L: Dominic M: Time: 1 hr 15 mins Distance: Approx. 2½ miles. Along dunes and beach to Climping Mill, then across fields to Ferry Road and Rope Walk to AYC. Refreshments are available at the Yacht Club on the return. Meet: 10.45am (to allow for train) at Arun Yacht Club Car Park, Rope Walk, Littlehampton, West Sussex, BN17 5DL. Your support to the club in buying refreshments is appreciated in return for free parking. By Car: Take the A259, Bognor Littlehampton Road. About ¼ mile east of Ford Road roundabout, turn south into Ferry Road. Follow signs for beach and Golf Course onto Rope Walk. The Yacht Club is on west bank of the river opposite the golf club at the top of the slope. By Bus/Train: Across the footbridge opposite Littlehampton station. Turn left, the Yacht Club is about 1/3 of a mile ahead. Bus 700

Return is by bus (every 15 min), get off at the Marina entrance. BRING YOUR BUS PASS OR MONEY. TAKE A DRINK Meet: Chichester Marina, Birdham. Thurs 13th Feb - 10:30am WISBOROUGH GREEN

L: Richard M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: Approx. 4 miles. From Wisborough Green we walk along a quiet country lane to the river Arun and the unrestored section of the Wey Arun canal, which we follow to an old lock and water wheel, which was used to raise water from the river to the canal. The walk is level with 10+ stiles on route, and 100 yards of busy road to negotiate, otherwise very quiet and peaceful. Fields with stock, therefore sorry, no dogs. Meet: On the North side of the green near the cricket pavilion. 024893N 0.505537W By Car: From Petworth take A272 to Wisborough Green. Turn left just after village green and proceed to North side near pavilion.

Thurs 13th Feb – 10.30am CHALTON

L: Jane M: Pete D Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 5 miles. Open countryside and country lanes from the old village of Chalton. Some hills and stiles. NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS. No dogs on this walk please. Meet: Chalton Village Car Park which is just before the pub if travelling from Finchdean.

L: Fiona Distance: 3.5 miles Embrace the big sky and winds of the South Downs Way for some invigorating fresh air and a climb up to Beacon Hill to help blow the cobwebs away. Will be taken leisurely no stiles, not for beginners. Meet: Harting Down car park off the B2141 between Chilgrove and South Harting.

L: Andy Time: 1.5hrs Distance: 2 miles. A level, easy going walk on heathland tracks, including part of the Serpents Trail looking at some of the special features of our Heathland Heritage. On land Managed by the South Downs National Park Authority (on behalf of landowner, Mr Mir) and delivered as part of the Heathlands Reunited Project (https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/care-for/heathland/heathlands-reunited/) Take the lead on the heath and bring your dog too (dogs on leads please and pick up after them) Meet: Chapel Common Parking Area By Car: From B2070 (Rake to Liphook) take turning north, 0.25 mile after Rake CofE School (post code GU33 7JL). L: Peter & Alison M: Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles. Starting on the South Downs Way and coming back down into Cocking with an opportunity to visit the History Column and 11th century church. Some steep gradients. It will be muddy in places if it has rained recently. Meet: Cocking Hill car park (nearest postcode GU29 0HT) By Car: On the A286 Chichester – Midhurst road By Bus: No 60 from Chichester every 30 mins

Thurs 20th Feb – 10.30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED HEALTHY HEATH WALK*

LORD’S PIECE POOTLE

L: Charles M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 1.3 miles. A gentle circular walk – or pootle! – taking in a variety of wildlife, with views of the open heaths and rolling Downland landscape. Suitable for pushchairs (kissing gate at start to get on site) and off road trampers, but not wheelchairs. The route is mostly on the flat, but there are some medium gradients in parts with minor rutting and loose sand. Well behaved dogs on a lead welcome. Meet: Lord’s Piece, Coates Lane, Sutton, RH20 1PZ. SU 99003 17374 By Car: From A272 take A285 south from Petworth, turning left at Heath End onto Burton Park Road. Keep going past Burton Mill Pond and the turning right to Sutton until you reach another right hand turn. The car park for Lord’s Piece (grid ref SU 98997 17368) is immediately after this turning on your right.

Fri 21st Feb - 10:30am BURPHAM AND WEPHAM

L: Jane M: Pete D Time: 2 hrs Distance: Approx. 5 miles. Hilly with several climbs. Lovely views. Can be uneven and muddy underfoot in the woods. Has stiles. No dogs on this walk please. Meet: The public car park behind the George at Burpham BN18 9RR. By Car: Travelling east out of Arundel, take the first turning left after the railway bridge and follow

the signs to Burpham village. The car park is accessed behind the pub.

L: Dominic M: Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 3 ½ mile walk along Monarch Way and South Downs Way. This walk has steep inclines and is not suitable for beginners. Meet: Whiteways car park on A29. BN18 9FD By Car: The car park is at the junction of the A29, A284 and B2139.

Sat 22nd Feb – 10.15am *10:15AM START* GRAYLINGWELL

L: Sarah Time: approx. 40 mins Distance 1.25 miles A flat walk at a gentle pace, enjoying the history of Graylingwell Park and surrounding areas, the buildings, trees & wildlife. Finishing in time for a hot drink at the Community Café held on Graylingwell Park until midday. Meet : Outside the glass building looking onto Havenstoke Park, formerly the Linden Homes site marketing suite. Parking is very limited around the park, please walk, use public transport or car share. By Car: approach via College Lane and enter Graylingwell Park via Bloomfield Drive or Connolly Way there are a few Car Parking spaces around Havenstoke Park, but very few which may be occupied. Graylingwell Park has parking control in force. By Bus: Number 50 run from the Cathedral every hour arriving at 7 mins past 10, the return bus to the Cathedral leaves at 20 mins past the hour.

L: Richard M: Time: 2 hrs 15 mins Distance: 4.7 miles. We walk westward along the tow path to where the Sussex/Surrey border path crosses, then turn North adjacent to a restored lock. We then make our

L: Helen M: Keith Time/Distance: 1 hour/3 miles (longer walk), 30 minutes/1 mile (shorter walk) Come along to enjoy a picturesque walk from the New Life Christian Church car park, through Emsworth Yacht Club, out along the embankment onto the Thorney Island West Coast footpath. There is a gentle slope onto the footpath, but the rest is a firm, stony footpath, taking in views over beautiful Emsworth Harbour, salt marshes and the seabirds. There is also a narrow footpath which although higher and more exposed takes in stunning views across the harbour towards Emsworth. Meet: The New Life Christian Church car park and back to the church hall for a chat, cup of tea and cake. By Car: From A259 turn onto Thorney Road, Emsworth, drive 100 meters down a lane and the church is well signposted. At the end of the drive is the car park. Post code PO10 8BN. We will walk up to the main road to catch the bus back to Emsworth for those who have driven or back to Chichester for those who have travelled by bus. L: Peter and Alison Time: 3 hrs Distance: 6.5 miles. A walk from Walderton via Stansted and West Marden, including lanes and pleasant walking through woods and fields. It is a moderately strenuous longer walk with some gentle hills. Could be very muddy if there has been a lot of rain and there are five stiles. Meet: At the junction of the B2146 and the Walderton Stoughton Road, where parking is available on the grass verge by the River Ems. The Park is also dotted with magnificent oaks, beeches and chestnuts. Our walk passes Capability Brown's famous view across Upper Pond to the House. L: Abbi Time: 2 hrs Distance: No more than 3 miles A series of walks under 5km that take in the stunning heathland scenery around Stedham. All walks will leave from the Wildlife Trust car park and cover uneven, boggy ground so sturdy boots and walking poles are encouraged. Walks will finish no later than 12.30pm. By Bus: Iping Lane bus stop, served by the 92 bus. By Car: Head West out of Midhurst on the A272, take a left turn onto Elsted Rd and drive about 200m up the hill. At the top of the slope the car park is on the right with a height barrier. Parking is free but leave valuables at home as this is a known break-in site. There is a gentle slope onto the footpath, but the rest is a firm, stony footpath, taking in views over beautiful Emsworth Harbour, salt marshes and the seabirds. There is also a narrow footpath which although higher and more exposed takes in stunning views across the harbour towards Emsworth. Meet: The New Life Christian Church car park and back to the church hall for a chat, cup of tea and cake. By Car: From A259 turn onto Thorney Road, Emsworth, drive 100 meters down a lane and the church is well signposted. At the end of the drive is the car park. Post code PO10 8BN. During the walk we will look at the recent management undertaken on the site and discuss how this has improved the habitat for a variety of heathland species. The route will take in some steeper hills with rutting and loose sand. There will also be some wet areas so bring suitable footwear. Car park with loos and visitor centre. By Car: Take the A283 south from Petworth. After a couple of km keep an eye out for the signs to the RSPB Pulborough Brooks reserve and park at the visitors centre car park.
