In January of 1987, after two months of negotiations, IPWand the SPCsigned anagreement tobringhundredsofAmerican andSoviet citizens togetherfor a remarkable joint Wllk in the Soviet Union; No public interaction of thistype or scale had ever been attempted between these two nations.

Between 8 June to 14 July, 1987, the "impossible" Wllk became a reality.1Wohundred andthirtyAmericans and200 Soviets journeyed together, mostlyon foot, the 450 miles between Leningrad and MoscoW. Along the way, theyspoke withSoviets from allwalks oflife - factory andfarm workers, politiciansand dissidents, shop keepers and school children. There were no restrictionson interviews, photographs or conversation topics. Their route took them

through cities and villages, forests and farmlands. They were seen in personby over 250,000 Soviets, andinthe Soviet media by over onehundred million.

TheWlIk culminatedwiththe first Soviet-American stadium rockconcertinhistory-on the fourth ofJuly, inMoscow. Produced by Bill Graham for IP\v,the show included Santana, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, the Doobie Brothers,Collective Vision, and a host of Soviet stars. Three films were made of theWlIk - a one-hour documentary jointly filmed and edited by American andSoviet crews, an American concert special, and a 30 minute Soviet cinemapiece. The Soviet people welcomed the American Wllkers with an excitementandenthusiasm beyond anyone's greatest hopes. And the stage was set for evenmore extraordinary joint events in 1988 . . .

American Walkers in the Soviet Union will provide thesame unprecedented opportunity to thousands of Soviets.

..........~ . By talking openly with each other, proceeding from thecommon ground of our shared humanity, we gain insightinto how our conflicts began and how they might beresolved.

Large scale and high profile interactions such as theseWalks will allow the American and Soviet people to stripaway the veils of ideology and see each other with the clarityof experience. act in the belief that open and challeng-ing interactions will help us find the moral and politicalstrength to begin basingour international relations noton the size of our arsenals, but on the legitimate interestsofall people. .

It will have celebration- concerts and rallies, theatre and sport. It will be achallenge and an education, not only to the Walkers, but also to the citizensofthe cities and towns throughwhichitwill pass .Therewill beopendebates,in-campseminars, meetingswith people ofallwalks oflife andpolitical persua

This will be the largest group of publicly accessib le Soviets ever to visi ttheUnited States.TheSovietWalkers; like theAmericans, will includepeoplefrom across their country, ofmanyraces, ages andoccupations. How will theybe received? What will we learn about the openness of the American people? On the American-Soviet Wllk, the first of its kind on American soil, we will

confront these questions. .

The American and Soviet Walkers will live togetherduring the entire Walk. As this unique communityevolves, it will serve as an increasingly sophisticatedforum for examining our beliefs , poli tical and socialsystems, cultural and historical differences, as well asday-to-day events. The Walkers will become citizendiplomats.

TheWalk will beasa focusforthehopesand concernsof the Soviet people about the United States and thearms race.Consequently,Walkerswillbe the subjectsof

overwhelmingSoviet curiosityandhospitality. On the 1988 Walk, as on the 1987 Walk, we

andanxiety. The changingSoviet society offersa uniqueopportunityfor improvingAmericanSoviet relations.

With your help, the 1988 Walk willplay an important role in creatinga new understanding between ourpeo ples.
